rdytdy 5,341 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 The Otaki RC race meeting has been abandoned. 13ml of rain fell this morning and with the pending forecast and inconsistencies in the track, the Stipendiary Stewards have made the decision to abandon the race meeting. Portfolio 728 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 Yeah, I think we all can understand a meeting called off in a storm, that is common sense. Its the meetings called off that have been urinated on by a few smurfs that is unacceptable. Tauhei Notts

There was NO storm No wind just steady rain overnight Why don't we just call off all racing at this time of the year and concentrate on autumn and winter racing Patiti
Race 6 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 The key line in understanding the abandonment at this time seems to be ‘inconsistencies in track’. There will be parts dry and parts pooling water. After all it was officially rated a Dead6 this morning So we can look to track maintenance being the cause of the abandonment... the weather predicted later today didn’t get a chance. Otherwise meeting would have been abandoned when/ if the predicted rain arrived late this afternoon and when/ if the track became deemed unsafe as a result. There has been a fair bit of this around the country this season. Should there be fewer tracks but better cared for? The country/industry cannot afford to maintain 50+ tracks in such a small country and until someone has the balls to make the call and have less tracks, located where the horse population resides, builds the right facilities to contain the product, maintains top class tracks etcetera, then until then, more of the same will be the norm. You don't see the NZRFU proposing to build Stadiums in the Horowhenua or Hunterville do you? So when is the first gutsy person going to stand up and be counted? Do something. Guest 2Admin2 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 I agree Trump however under your criteria Ellerslie and Trentham will be the first to go as never are a training track that supports a large horse population. Now the odds on either going is 70¢topped up by the NZRB to a $1.
Race 6 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 There can be more than one criteria involved to judge where racing should be focused. No need to be intentionally obtuse The tens of thousands paid by owners wasted on each abandoned meeting loses owners and horses from the system... plus the bottleneck of young maidens created by lost opportunity compunds the effect in frustrating all involved in racing Less tracks maintained for higher volume racing. It has been a call for decades but the snail pace move in this direction has crippled the game from building on existing ownership or adding new owners that stay around for longer than one expensive and disappointing experience. Another damp and dismal day in racing. talk

Another damp and dismal day in racing. How many $20m tracks should we have then to maintain the current level of racing? Hint: count the number of racedays Hong Kong has, divide by 2 then divide NZ racedays by that number.
crustyngrizzly 1,700 Report post Posted January 4, 2018 In the book GALLOPING GREATS written by John Costello he asks Sid Brown if he thought improvements could be made to make the NZ racing scene more competitive with Aussie. ''Yes,i am sure that if racing clubs would amalgamate then the owners and trainers would have better tracks, better conditions and most important better prize money. There is too much money going into stands and facilities on small, unsafe and uneconomic tracks''' Don't really know if those comments apply in todays conditions. New Plymouth, Stratford, Hawera, Waverley, Wanganui, Awapuni, Hastings, Waipukurau, Tauherenikau, Trentham, Otaki. I can think of five that have shut down. Opaki, Feilding, Marton, Foxton, Levin. I would say Stratford, Waverley, Waipuk, should go. Surely not Otaki, not before Trentham is all weather. Or should we just have four. Hastings, Awapuni, Trentham, New Plymouth? Is racing strong enough in New Plymouth. All weather all of them

Explain to me why a club on your list of three should go that is financially sound can irrigate has rescued meetings that couldn’t be held at Otaki or Foxton and is an important part of the local rural community?
