Did it rain on Boxing Day in Auckland?

Recommended Posts

P4P, I watched the replays and it looked like the course was playing favourable to horses handy to the lead. Just a question of pace, class of horse or was it a so called "Track bias"? I had gone to golf and had 3 bets prior. STRATOCASTER (who raced very erratically),  BEASTMODE (a flashing finish for 3rd - another Spirit of Boom progeny) and CONTESSA VANESSA ( May God bless her little soul a lovely 35/1 with Ladbrokes!). I nearly backed Auth Paddy and looking at the replay, you have to question the other Jockeys in that race - or maybe sometimes there's not much they can do if they stick to riding instructions? But back to my question. Was there a bias towards horses racing handy do you think?

It was pretty much canter and sprint racing all day.

I cannot understand why the RIU doesn’t intervene ( they do when it suits them, they rubbed Alysha out for ten days for far less a week ago when it was more her horse’s fault ) because it’s ruining NZ racing as a punting opportunity.

The G1 Zabeel was run over 5 seconds slower than last year, that’s half a furlong slower FFS.

Isn't some of this attributable to the fact the tracks are off and inconsistent?  It's very hard to make up ground regardless of the pace so why wouldn't one stack them up behind you.

Should the RIU intervene to criticise the leader who sets the pace and wins (surely not because they are giving their horse the best possible chance to win) or the various trailing horses who don't apply any pressure (but probably not the horses actually in the trail or 1/1 as they are probably giving their horses the best possible chance also.

I'm not sure that RIU intervention is necessary. Sometimes you have to wonder if many Jockeys are not showing enough initiative - regardless of riding instructions. Or, maybe judging pace is no longer an art? It's a hard one but in a WFA race, often it's the jockey that makes a huge difference and in Auth Paddy's win, the jockey certainly made the rest of them look like amateurs.

IMO an excellent days racing.

As is  usual these days the two 2000+ m races were just canter sprint events and race 1 was easily controlled in front by a dominant and good horse.

Too many well fancied and talented horses got far too far back ,remember that jockey LAO'S who used to put his horses in the first few so he only had a few to pass !

Yes ,that rain at 4.45pm did affect the track....we know its not a great surface there ,and there has been a drought !

But reasonable money was up and a couple of small fields didn't help but overall racing was very competitive and the bigger pools resulted in good dividends.

A good day to be involved.

Those on track seemed to be having a good time ,there was a good crowd enjoying Ellerslie's excellent facilities.

I had a shocker on the punt, but still made money because I put $20 into a punters club, and the return was over $600 !! Thanks IF and TV for that, and I had a great day socialising if that matters.

There was some excellent raw material there for anyone interested in increasing the population.

Raw material? Do you mean Gold Diggers :)

Thought Lizzie L'Amour was ridden upside down Trumpy...much better coming with a last run.  They obviously figured it was better to be up near the pace as it was likely to be a slow one, but it cost her IMO.

Ridden upside down? Didnt she win the Cal Isuzu the same way and was stated that she was always going forward?.

if you werent handy it was inpossible to make ground in that race!, run so slow!

How the track played that bad was due to how much water was put on the track, disapointing and a lot of horses werent at their best on that.

She wouldn't have run a place if she was ridden back

She rode Sofia Rosa on a more sedate tempo? Some horses may not do as well changing their pattern but at least your giving them a sniff nO ? What made me laugh was Mick Dee on Princess Rihanna , they never took it south saying they didn’t think she’d run a mile then he gets out and tries to hold the front with pressure :blink:blood in both nostrils. it’s not rocket science and the races with pressure later produced the back runners so the track was playing fair after an early rails bias. There are a few black bookers moving forward but your still going to need your fair share of luck

I thought she was great winning a G2 the same way,

the way the race was run she was in the right spot but not good enough on the day. Stable are keen on her being handy but you are entitled to their opinion.

Why woudnt you want to be handy the way most Group races are run in NZ?

Soooooo....Cubity is no Maths Guru , but Tarquin our mate holds a degree in farm management from the University of Rangiora and as a prerequiste you need UE calculus (That's level 2 NCEA these days) .He said :

If P4P had a shocker , and then a $580 buck collect puts him ahead , and excellent raw material did in fact lead to a population increase....isn't the answer 3 cubed ?

Money is made round to go 'round .

Simply increase bet sizes , pick winners , enter more punter's clubs and ascertain if a population increase is what the Auckland market needs right now .

Bet responsibly but remember ...The more you bet , the more you win !

The Infield ‘enclosure’ is getting more sedate and badly managed by the year,I guess their way of thinking is if your a more serious punter you will be on the right side of the fence. The only beer they had were corona cans(it’s only just passable in bottles cold ) and speights ,the intertrack facility was shithouse you couldn’t hear piss all and the urinals were open at either end facing east to west so binocular bill could have a perve. I didn’t see any bet slips around the tote but getting a bet on was no issue because there were only a few people punting. I only saw one young woman’s lunch and one pissed guy at the hot dog stand. What a joke. It use to be a nightmare getting out at days end but not anymore . They will struggle in years to come without a doubt

Won't all racing struggle, when the main product becomes a secondary event to other proceedings on the day. So many of the bigger racing clubs with numerous race dates are just concerned about the quick buck and not concentrating on their core product i.e. the horse and the racing instead its beers, birds and a fictitious party. It will come back to haunt the sport, in fact we are already seeing signs of that decline now.

The Infield at Ellerslie Boxing Day was legendary . People kept coming back in droves and the racing was Secondary then Huey nO? From what we witnessed the other day the numbers attending next year will be a record low in the infield....Carona Cans:blink::D If Ellerslie are after a quick buck which it seems with this performance they are not looking ahead, they had a captive audience Boxing Day but they were released with a bad taste in their mouths

Ellerslie Boxing Day seemed to be a great success from those attending's point of view.

If the infield is only used once or twice a year there are bound to be a few hiccups there ,but I question why a racing 'purist' would consider that area...for the Bouncy castle maybe ?

I watched races from both the public and members and both were chokka , I saw little to complain about.....sure there are the usual $1 each way punters holding up the selling windows ,chips are $5 and drinks more expensive than at the Warehouse but it is a public holiday !

The fields were generally on the small side ,and the music got a bit loud at times and I saw a bit of bird shit on a seat that never gets used on the other 364 days.

But generally it was a good day out , with everything from crowd control to toilet paper ,to selling windows , to carpark wardens in great supply...there were 5 workers at the Hospital roundabout.

Its a day for us youngsters.....its our party.......Fashion ,eye candy , drinks ,happy times , the start of the "time off work" ...brilliant !

During one exciting race the guy beside me trolled his phone looking at old photos .and at the table I set up as a base the old foggies there did not have one single bet in any race race over a 4 hour period and we were just under the inter track screens...nor did they buy drinks or food ,plenty of free water. But how they envied our high heels ,skimpy dresses and happy impositions.

Few go for the horses , those days are well gone......who makes a huge effort in personal appearance ,transport etc to see a few horses sprint around a track for 1min 24 secs every 45 minutes !

Well done Auckland Racing Club ...a well run event !
