It's a lot cheaper for many of those who go around at Palmy to race there than for them to go to Cambridge (where stakes lower) or Auckland (premier horses)      Why the hell do you want to get rid of the part timers from the CD's anyway??     If bloody Wanganui can race 2 days of dogs every week surely harness can handle 10 - 12  meetings a year at Palmy?

The cost of maintaining a racecourse at Palmerston North cannot be justified. Why should racing continue there just to keep a few amateurs happy. This is the sort of thinking that got racing in to its current poor financial situation. We need to be ruthless if Harness Racing is to continue. Harness Racing is no longer a sport for amateurs it is an industry for professionals.

I'm sure you'll find that Michael House is quite happy that Manawatu is around - don't think he's an amateur.

What do you know about how they fund the maintenance of their course?

Pretty sure they own it for a start and know for a fact that they employ about 1/5 of the ground staff that Cambridge do ..... and their stakes are far superior - probably some correlation there.

Stables Stables you do not know the area and I hope you are just stirring  as there are enough horses trained in Taranaki, Bulls Manawatu,

Wairarapa,Wellington region plus on track to maintain Harness Racing . Mike Berger, Michael House andothers enjoy racing here and many top horses have and are being developed  here, I am picking you"re  a person that wears the term JAFFA proudly without understanding its full meaning...!:rcf-alien:

No i'm afraid you got that one wrong John. I wonder if you have read and understood the implications of the Messara report. Clubs like Palmerston North won't be able to survive if as stated by Winston Peters "the report will be implemented in full"

not when virtually every comment you have made is an insult to a large trotting fraternity with collectively millions invested in property and horses. some of your amateuretc etc.  insults are against people such as Doug gale a group winning trainer also Stephen Doody trainer originally of Blossom lady and Te Kawau. Perhaps Auckland track should become more apartments and the funds distributed around centres such as cambridge/manawatuI have personally only stayed in harness racing because of Manawatu Harness racing and the tremendous efforts of a volunteer committee who do their best to produce top facilities/for horses and patrons often on a shoestring budget. After 50years in harness racing as an owner/breedertreasurer/committee man and fulltime sec.manager for metoeven give you any sort of reply. I have fought battles when the odds were against winning over introducing a passing lane to nz/free entry to

courses/ $75000 trainer bonuses etc all worked may explain why Messara report will only be implemented where it is economically sensible. Not where it woulddestroy a large betting pool as well as a large trainer/owner pool.in the lower half of the north island.population around 1 million

.

I remember going to the trials at wyndham one day about 25 years ago and there were over 240 horses in and a large number came from part timers.  They are the ones who paid the studs to breed a horse, paid a professional to break in their horses, paid the transport companies, paid the farrier and the vet, had a bet, brought along the family to the races and had the extended family follow their horses, often some of whom later became involved. They are the ones who helped make up the full fields which provided driving fees for the professionals at the races and trials.

When I watched the full fields at rangiora the other day I was taken by some of the drivers who may sometimes get 1 or 2 drives, actually had 10 or 11. Why because of field size, and many of those were trained by amateurs.

The point is the more people that participate, the greater the money circulated. To maintain participation levels you must strike a balance which allows everyone to participate. Im not saying closing some tracks is a bad thing, i think it inevitable in some instances and actually agree with that. They just have to be strategic in the choices.

So what tracks OWNED by Harness Clubs should be closed??

Im pretty sure the so called " Land Grab" as per some people wont be happening as a result of the Messiah report. Might just be a case of survival of the fittest in terms of track  which is how it should be. Not so sure about Gallops closures as a lot of track and race day stuff is done in harness by volunteers. Many of the tracks listed for disposal by the thoroughbred code are owned jointly by harness and galloping. Rangiora is an interesting example. The thoroughbred people are keen to sell as they can't even race on the track. However a lot of horses are trained on the track, both thoroughbred and harness and the track is utilised on a regular basis by harness for trials, workouts and race meetings. The land is located adjacent to a major and rapidly growing housing area and consequently it would be very valuable. What do you do sell the track and reallocate the funds for upgrading the facilities at other tracks or keep it and tie up a huge amount in reusable funds

One of the biggest problems facing both codes is the lack of availability of reasonable facilities  for both professional and amateur participants to operate from, close to large population bases.  The cost of land  around Canterbury and other bigger cities makes it almost impossible for aspiring young trainers, and also part timers to purchase their own properties. What is the industry doing to ensure those who want to participate have access to reasonable facilities which are run in non partisan, professional way.  Not enough in my opinion.

Some awful calls from this bloke on Thursday night at Manawatu....especially R2...embarrassing and over the top.

Calm down and don’t scream like Tony Lee..who is one of the worst at screaming, J Evans isn’t far off.

Another top appointment by Michelle Pickles at the NZRB...the talentless manager not the talent manager.

And why then is T.Lee regarded as one the best in the business by most....maybe you should post a tape on here of you calling so we can all decide how good you are at it...its a tough job and I think personally he is not a bad caller at all...you are entitled to your own opinion of course but please dont sit in the stand and take potshots at people trying their best to their job.

Called the wrong horse as the winner today at Invercargill in Race 4, not even the same colours....life your game...lucky we can all see now because the clowns that employ this bloke no longer provide radio coverage.

And then the clowns that put the past the post result up also got  it wrong. Dave McDonald must have been laughing. But hey we all make mistakes. Just some more than others!
