Winston.... he's a doozie...

Recommended Posts

Did he or didn't he rort the Ministry of Social Development ?

He's been shacked up w Jan Trotter for years while he's claimed the single pension, but I can't see why he'd risk everything for a miserable $60 extra a week.

I suppose some will be thinking that if he is guilty of rorting the system he's even more suited to be Minister for Racing.....and he'd fit in nicely in Petone.

It's all rather odd now though because if National has knifed Winnie he'll drift back to Labour, but given that he refuses to work with the Greens he can't really form a coalition there unless the Greens don't get into Parliament, or if Labour divorces the dolphin huggers.

It's a twisted old political world we live in and Winnie's plans impact on this industry no matter which scenario unfolds here.

Perhaps someone should ask Winston to declare his views on the Racing Amendment Act.

I'm prepared to believe it was a mistake, and not a rort, unlike the Green thing that didn't even volunteer to pay it back, but rather thought it was entitled to it. I for one, am prepared to forgive him on this one.

Agreed there is a huge difference, and it is a mistake

Still not a great mistake for someone who spends so much time courting the grey vote to make.

The bit I do find slightly objectionable is the way he refuses to come clean on things and bluffs all questions away - while lobbing accusations and asking for answers from anyone else on the wrong end of this sort of thing.

Agree Col. In a world where"taking offence" is the biggest game in town he is going to shove it up detractors best by publishing the details. If they are as he says then he wins big-time. BUT if he is obfuscating yet again????

At the time he claimed the pension he would have had to make a declaration as to his(relationship) status.  If he was in a relationship with this lady at the time then he has made a false declaration.  No good him blaming the IRD or MSD or the National Party or saying it was an innocent mistake.  If one of us common people did it we would have the book thrown at us.

As for saying he didn't know he has been flogging the Grey Power thing for years - highly unlikely he would not have known the differences in amount that single and married pensioners receive.

He is desperately trying swing the focus onto the source of the leak(it will not be IRD you can be pretty sure of that - they monitor very closely the records of prominent people and accessing things you are not entitled to is a immediate sacking offence) but at the end of the day he is the one who got the dosh.

I see on the Herald website he is saying the National Party knew he had been overpaid before he did -  yeah right Winnie remind me who's bank account it went into again?

Besides which if it was a National MP who got extra super he would be screaming blue murder

I reckon this is another Owen Glenn situation and it is going to be interesting to see how it plays out and the effect it has on the election.

For years he would have been bombarded by 100s of the "blue rinse brigade" wittering on about the level of payment of their pension--he would have known exactly what he is entitled to, just as I do at just under $300/week, with minimal change over the last several years. He would have known $350-360 was incorrect but knowing Winston he will plead that they were sleeping in separate beds!!!

Not necessarily as he's still working and earning a good income his super would likely be on a high secondary tax code which would affect the amount that gets deposited into his bank account and would be different to someone who's super is their main income.

Fair point Tonkatime, I am only relating my own perilous financial position as a member of the great unwashed horse-owner group burning capital with no MP income.

He would still know the gross he was receiving if only from his personal tax summary.  Winnie isn't stupid.

And I assume you have to make a declaration of marital status and living arrangements every year for National Super(because of course you get extra for living alone versus with someone else whether a partner/spouse or not)

What is surprising is that Winz did not know of his position earlier - makes you wonder how many others are collecting on this particular scenario.  If Winz do not require regular declarations of status I would like to know why not.

More importantly what about the scenario where an elderly person is widowed but is not aware of their entitlement to increased payments. Exactly the type of person the pension is designed to help missing out on income they are entitled to.

Knowing Winz(and ACC is another example) as I do they would worm their way out of any payment they possibly can.

It's a non-issue: he did what the amoral Meteria Turei didn't do - and PAID IT BACK!!!!! Move on - there's nothing to see here....

I suppose that means like Turei he should be nominated for New Zealander of the Year. Got to be a Tui ad. WINZton said he understood what it was all about and professed "I'm a qualified lawyer." He's been in Politics since '78 so hasn't been a lawyer for more than forty years. He also told the people of Northland last night he had been a primary and secondary school teacher. What a load of bollocks.  Northlanders (well, Kaipara people) love him. He's odds on favourite to win Northland again but remember the old adage- "Never back an odd-on favourite in a small field."

They do Tom. It's a requirement.

from what I get out of this, Winston peters made a declaration and signed it the actual problem with the oversight was with the winz case officer, which people, happens on a regular basis.

winz   gets clients into the local office yearly , as a catch up, and go over intitlement.  and from what has been said via media , the mistake was with winz, what Winston peters is going off his block about is stuff ups like paula Bennett were given details of what happened and some one passed it ion to the media. a violation of his civil rights.

they secretly  leaked the information to the media to stir the pot, dirty politics  but nothing not expected from national and the labour party  alias, the communist party , I say that as a former labour LEC chairperson, labour being a socialist party :) and with all this crap about benefit fraud  recently  I now confirm  because of this recent Winston peters case and  meteria turei case, I will now put my vote 100% behind  NZ FIRST , because of the  political corruption of government.  shame the lot of them, may they all hang and go to hell :)

what pisses me, is those mp's collecting  wages, pension as well as a parliamentary pension... any one know if this is true?

my understanding if 2 terms served they are titled  to a  parliamentary pension, either while still a serving MP, or an unreturned ex MP.

It has been publicly stated that: Winston went into MSD with his partner when he applied for super and to do all the paperwork. Also, the  payments were set up with his bank to go straight into a savings account.

Nothing more than an HONEST mistake. A busy man like Winston wouldn't be checking his account  weekly for the Super payments to notice any discrepancies.

When the mistake was discovered by MSD, Winston paid it back - simples.

What's the common denominator of ALL things shite going on with NZRacing and National of late? The one and only Glenda Hughes. Both need to get rid of the cancer before it spreads and does incurable damage!

He got the money.  He must have known(with the way he sucks up to Grey Power) that his gross was more than he was entitled to.  He did not contact them to advise the error.  He must also (as Ohokaman said) have made yearly declarations of his status.  MSD might have made one mistake but seven? All this crap about who leaked it is a smokescreen and the bottom line is if this was a National MP Winston would be screaming blue murder.

These media focusing on the National Party - wasn't it Lloyd Burr who broke the story?  - he must know his source so why does he not come clean? Before anyone says anything about journalistic entitlement to not reveal their sources they also have a duty to tell the truth not speculate over matters which they know the facts of for certain

He wouldn't notice or take the risk for an extra $28 a week ffs. Quite obviously leaked by national to try and swing voters, but it will backfire, winston will now definitely get my vote , he is the only decent politician left in nz

National super for someone married for the year ended 31 March 2017 was $17,446.  For a single person living alone the amount was $21,176.  That is $73 per week not $28.  Even at the maximum tax rate the extra amount after tax would be almost $50 a week or $100 per fortnight.

He would have known all right and if someone else had done it he would be screeching for blood.

Sauce for the goose

I'm surprised Winnie, the great "Racing Saviour", being a rabid Racecafe reader, due to his "great" interest in racing, hasn't already responded to some of the comments here? Unless of course his interest in racing only stretches to the Conmittee Room bar? Common people, if u are voting for Winston because u think he's the Racing Industry saviour, well, sincerely, you are doomed.

I am currently having a heated debate with my brother  that is 150% full of labour bull shit, telling me at my age that I have to vote labour because

I come from a labour famil and my father was general sectrary of the Auckland labour party some years ago..never mind freedom of choice or what I believe in,

I guess he and myself will not be talking to each another for a while, shame as he has just been told he has cancer  (to much smoking)

as it is in clutha southland aas yet we have not seen a lot about canadates, labour had  their canadate at the Mataura RSA a few weeks ago and

no one turned up... that says something...  and national have just decided on their replacement canadate.., he  really looks like a yes man, should go along way in the national party.

I can not tell you who the nz first canadate is, all I can remember is , it is a female... and that I do have a problem with. :) they all belong in the kitchen. :)

a couple of things about politics, that don't belong... religion and woman  don't mix.
