The chickens are now coming home to roost. The Government setting out to eliminate COVID was a huge miscalculation. This was never a realistic option. It’s on a par with their Kiwibuild pledge. The Labour politicians seem divorced from reality, even the three or four that have something resembling a brain between the ears. These people are simply not up to the task. This whole thing has been a disaster waiting to happen.

The Labour-led Government have proven themselves to be completely and utterly incompetent in virtually all areas of governance. Their failures are too many to list here so I’ll concentrate on COVID. Right from the start, the woman who was given the job of running the place has used COVID primarily to further her own political ambitions. It has never been about putting the necessary policies in place to deal realistically with the virus. This is the reason for the mess we are now in.

Ardern’s main focus has been on her television appearances, which have become nothing more than party political broadcasts. While this daily circus is going on she is obviously paying no attention to dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. It has now become apparent that 63.5% of staff working with people who have arrived at the border have never been tested.

Chris Hipkins drew the short straw for being thrown under the bus, having to defend the indefensible under Mike Hosking’ questioning. He was, of course, having to defend a mess not of his making which, as his answers illustrated, he was not able to do. Saying some workers didn’t want to be tested is worse than pathetic.

Thanks to the hapless handling of COVID the situation now has the appearance of a runaway train. Not once has this Government been proactive. They have been reactive, e.g. testing everyone working at the border only AFTER being shown up for the lack of border testing.

Ardern should have been asking questions of the appropriate Ministers to ensure their officials were doing everything possible to prevent another outbreak at the border. This obviously hasn’t happened and now we are all paying a price.

Equally as bad is the fact that there is no plan going forward. Judith and Gerry have both been asking for the plan. Where is it? The answer has been to castigate them for having the temerity to ask. The rest of us have to ask: do we, in fact, have children running the playground? After what’s gone on it is a perfectly legitimate question. Winston Peters says the latest outbreak is due to a border breach. Chris Hipkins says there’s no evidence for that claim. How can he say that when most of the workers at the border have never had a test. A border breach is a very likely scenario.

We are now witnessing a COVID circus. She who didn’t know what GDP was is the one responsible. Businesses will no doubt close, there will be more job losses and the Government will have to fund more people on welfare. There is no plan for major job creation apart from tinkering around the edges. As a result, there are no strategies to get the country moving in a way that will kickstart the economy. There is nothing to suggest the country is going to get the economic boost it so badly needs.

As I see it the plan seems to be that every time someone sneezes we will go into lockdown in the vain hope we will eliminate the virus. This does nothing but cause uncertainty for business.

The common view now forming around the world among experts is that a reliable vaccine is years away, lockdowns are not the answer and, as the virus is not going to go away anytime soon, we have to learn to live with it. I bet the last ones to take this advice will be the imbeciles in charge here. We must open up the borders like, and to, the rest of the world.

Was watching Al Jazeera  news and the guy from Dunedin , Dr or what ever , the guy with thick glasses often on our screens , so called covert expert being interviewed about covid and other issues , NZ is doing extremely well, the current out break is small and under control , Whatabout the Economy asked the interviewer Answer  it's recovered really well  , Yeah REALLY, 1.2 million receiving job wage support on BORROWED  money , CHILD POVERTY DOUBLED ,  home less doubled  , a record 14000 on state housing waiting list , trebled emergency food parcel distributions , rents through the roof , all this type of failure was ignored BUT WE ARE  doing really well , he deserves an Oscar .

Talkback Hosts Slam the Covid Queen and her Government

Talkback hosts have been fielding hostile calls all week. Little wonder that they’ve been damning in their weekly columns. Heather du Plessis-Allan is scathing of the government in her column:

The Government’s decision to extend Auckland’s level 3 lockdown is a massive disappointment. Worse, it is a failure: a failure by authorities to properly prepare New Zealand for the inevitable return of Covid.

The disease was always going to come back. We’ve seen that across the world: Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Victoria.

If that was a given – and it was – why didn’t authorities spend every minute since the last lockdown preparing the country so we wouldn’t need another one? Those 102 days of no community transmission were days we bought for them with the first lockdown. Kiwis paid for it with their jobs, their businesses, their mental health, and other immeasurable costs.

The Employers and Manufacturers Association’s Brett O’Riley says “the business community have done their part … and it’s only a reasonable expectation that every precaution is taken at the border to ensure that this virus is contained”.

We did our part. Why didn’t they do theirs?

This week we watched health authorities fail at virtually every task. They didn’t have enough testing stations, they didn’t have enough PPE for nurses (again), and, in a mind-blowingly stupid twist, we discovered they weren’t testing all border workers to stop them bringing it into New Zealand.

Lockdowns should not be the go-to option. They should be the last resort. They are too expensive. They cost people’s livelihoods, their jobs and their businesses.

This is not an objection to the attempts to prevent Covid’s spread. It is an objection to health authorities having no option but nuclear, because they weren’t ready for something they knew would happen. It is an objection to the failure of those authorities and the ministers in charge of them to prepare the safeguards to prevent another lockdown.

We had more than three months without community transmission. It cost Kiwis so much to make that possible. Why didn’t authorities use that time to prepare for the inevitable?

How many more times will they need to put us into expensive lockdowns to buy them time?

We can’t keep doing this. The damage is worse each time.

Kerre McIvor is similarly hostile:

… it hasn’t been a great week for the Prime Minister and the Director General.

They must have known from last time that people would demand to be tested once Covid was in the community but there weren’t nearly enough testing stations and the poor staff were simply overwhelmed.

It was also revealed this week that 63 per cent of frontline border security and quarantine staff have yet to be tested for Covid.

It seems farcical that with all this banging on about saying yes to the test, we’re not screening the very people who are in contact with freshly returned Kiwis.

Add that to the misinformation about PPE gear and the flu vaccines and you’d have to say that there have been some major stuff-ups from the Government and the Health Department. But dare to say that, should you have the temerity to so much as murmur a criticism of the PM and the faithful turn on you.

The people mobilising to defend the ‘Covid Queen’ are hardly practising kindness either, with some of them wishing violent harm to those of us who raise valid questions about failures.

When did we all get so binary and, in some cases, bats*** crazy? Those who worship at the Church of St Jacinda and the Holy Bloomfield are blind to any wrongs or failings of their demigods.

You simply cannot have a free and frank exchange of views with some people – it’s like the Springbok tour all over again. If you dare to suggest the Government has made mistakes, the acolytes cast you into the camp of the conspiracy theorists who are alive and well and fomenting their madness all across social media. They – the acolytes and the tinfoil hat-wearers – are blind to reason and rationale.

When I express incredulity that border security staff aren’t being routinely tested, that doesn’t mean I think that Ashley Bloomfield has the mark of the beast on his forehead.

When Sandra Goudie, the Thames Coromandel Mayor, said she was annoyed that the PM announced a lockdown but put police on the borders only 15 hours after the announcement, thus allowing Aucklanders to flee to their baches for the duration of the lockdown, that doesn’t mean she believes the PM is an evil person with a hidden agenda to turn New Zealand into a communist country.

When Professor Des Gorman says the Government has been too reactive and too partisan when dealing with Covid, he’s not saying the virus is being introduced back into the community by government agents. He’s expressing a considered opinion that has some merit.

When did people get so rabid and lacking in nuance? Covid hasn’t just robbed us of our freedoms; it’s robbed us of our senses.

I’m not sure Jacinda Ardern will be happy with her election plans being upset in such a dramatic manner.

The anger on the streets of Auckland is palpable, and that will be coming off the government’s support.

They were so high in the polls, now the only way is down. They thought they were going to march to glory. Now it appears they’ll be dragged from their offices in ignominy.

Kate Hawkesby: Government forgetting about the silent majority

The complacent danger the government’s walking into right now is believing its own hype and taking to heart the groundswell of staunch and active support it has across social media at the moment.

The left have mobilised into a tribe of such determined one-eyed acolytes, that their entire focus right now is to hunt down anyone daring to question the PM’s moves or decisions, and basically to eviscerate them.

Questioning the government makes you either a hater, a conspiracy theorist, a troll, or quite simply unpatriotic.

This venomous lobby group – includes many across social media but most of the mainstream media – has fallen under the spell too. The press gallery are most glaringly the people holding the government to account the least.

You’d think the media and government had almost forgotten about the existence of the silent majority. Those not on FB or Twitter, those not doing Instagram selfies with the PM, those regular everyday working mum and dads who’re looking down the barrel of an extremely grim economic future and are worried sick.

If people were allowed to dare question the PM, without the rabid left calling for them to be cancelled for doing so, here’s what needs answering;

Should Chris Hipkins be running Health, when he is also the Minister of Education, State of Services, and Leader of the House? We’ve already been through one incompetent Health Minister, have we not learned by now that it’s surely a fulltime job needing his full attention? And could I suggest may even be a contributing factor as to why the ball was so badly dropped on the border testing.

Why isn’t our contact tracing gold standard? They've had months to get it right.

What’s our Plan B beyond elimination?

Why aren’t we tougher at quarantine hotels?

Why have we come so late to the mask party?

Why is the chain of information from officials to government to public so slow?

How can we trust a government who got the availability of flu vaccines, testing kits and PPE gear so wrong first time round?

I’d also question the North Korea vibe coming from the 1pm pulpit. “There is only one source of truth,” Hipkins keeps reiterating in the manner of annoyed Dad. Unfortunately, not all their facts are accurate, just ask the seething Principal of Pakuranga College.

Likewise, many of the ‘we’re the first/best/only’ in the world’ statements, are not quite accurate either. It’s a tad Trump-esque. But it does play to an adoring base programmed not to question anything.

But the team of 5 million feels a little more divided this time, and I don't just mean regionally.

Sure, if you’re after smiles and warm fuzzies, the PM’s a good communicator. But good communication must also contain facts, trust, and honesty.

This was supposed to be 'the most open honest transparent government ever'. Turns out that message has conveniently changed to ‘be kind’. But what we’d really like to see now, in all honesty, is competence.

Mike Hosking: The tide is draining on support for the lockdown approach

 

So this is it? This is our future?

Given the Government are obsessed with elimination, which is a word they should stop using given it isn't - and was never - eliminated. It was suppressed, until a mistake at the border was made.

So what we know is that next time - and there will be a next time - the next time we get a leak we are in lockdown for at least two weeks.

What would have been immeasurably more positive, uplifting and realistic is to say, given it's a cluster, given our contact tracing is world-class, given we have electronic apps and contacts, we can safely move Auckland to level 2 and the rest of the country to level 1 after two and a-half days.

What that would have done is give us a read on how this country and its economy operates going forward. And even though many would think that's still too conservative and economically damaging, at least it would have been a great deal more aggressive and sensible than what we got.

They are on a hiding to nothing. Until a vaccine or a change of government, we are at the hostage of control freaks who are maintaining an approach that has failed and the world has given up on. The amount of reading to be done on the damage of an elimination strategy is growing by the day, if not the hour.

We have gone from a fear of mass death and overwhelmed ICUs to being obsessed over a comparative handful of people.

It's a cluster, it's not a mass outbreak. We have had all the time we needed to be ready. They said it would happen, they weren't ready. They've barely advanced in approach from March.

We don't have the money to keep footing the bill, we don't have the psychological wherewithal to withstand an ongoing fear that somehow, someway, this is going to be happening over, over, and over again. The Government's credibility was based on elimination, their word. They seemed to convince enough people they'd achieved it. They were wrong. They were always wrong.

And every time we now go through this, the resilience fades, the question marks increase, and the anger grows. The tide is draining on support for this approach.

And that is why we have elections.

It was written in part by a Susan Michie who is a "Behavioural " expert & ex wife of one of the founder of one of the  main Trade Unions ( a registered charitable organization so no Taxes are paid) in the UK.

Questions need to be asked why New Zealand is not using New Zealand focused papers that have been written expressly for New Zealand  based on Professional opinions for Guidance rather than the scientific research papers they have been which all come from random non comparable countries.

 

The original Pandemic Plan for NZ that goes back to the early 2000's , from memory that was Swine flu, was drafted & written by Dr Lance Jennings.

 It's freely available online as are the subsequent ones he's been an accessory to.

He based his original paper on a plan written by an Asian chap whose name currently escapes me.

There really needs to be a thorough investigation into the whole chain of events to see where serious failures are occurring.

 

Every time Miss Ardern quotes another Countries modelling & what's happening there comes directly from a Scientific Research Paper that's come from either China, Italy, Singapore, Spain, Norway, South Korea, Victoria etc depending on what's been published in the Media in those countries which is comparing apples with nuts.

 

The first papers & modelling was based on China which is not comparable to New Zealand.
