Jacinda’s Midas Touch with Australia

By Christie

Jacinda is nothing more than a virtue signalling prime minister who has won international acclaim for donning a hijab and hugging people, but telling Australia how to manage its own immigration policy is going to cost us dearly. We have already speculated that her finger-wagging at Australia will result in them making it harder for Kiwis to live there.

Well, guess what? Add that to her stunning list of achievements.

The relationship between New Zealand and Australia could be under further strain amid proposed immigration law changes.
The Australian Federal Government is looking to tighten visa requirements which will affect New Zealanders with criminal offences.
The proposed changes mean that anyone who has committed an offence that had a penalty of two years imprisonment could have their visa cancelled – even if that sentence hadn’t been imposed.
Under the current law, Kiwis who had been sentenced to 12 months jail had their visas automatically cancelled and were deported back to New Zealand.

So, to stop Jacinda bleating about Kiwi criminals being deported from Australia, the Aussies are tightening the rules and will now not grant a visa to anyone who has a criminal conviction that carried a sentence of two years or more; whether or not the sentence was actually imposed.

Once again, Australia has a perfect right to do this. Just try getting a visa for the USA if you have a criminal conviction.

Immigration researcher Henry Sherrell told ABC that if the bill was passed, some people would then fail the visa character test.

“If they’re guilty of a designated offence which is punishable by at least two years jail – but they don’t need to be sentenced to two years jail, they just need to commit a crime where the maximum punishment is two years.”

The law change would also be retrospective, meaning people with decade-old convictions could also be affected.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear…excuse me while I laugh. It is not that I want to see people who have turned their lives around being sent home… it is that Jacinda thought she could turn on the fairy dust in Australia; only to have it backfire spectacularly, resulting in even more Kiwis being sent back. The predictability of this whole situation is completely stunning… and the princess, of course, never saw it coming.

“Anyone who holds a visa who’s a non-citizen, this is an automatic provision, they won’t be automatically deported but they will fail the character test and then the department or the minister will have a discretionary power to cancel their visa if they see fit,” Sherrell told the ABC.
The bill has been referred to a Senate Committee which will report back in September.

So what was all that about “Yeah, we are great mates, and because of that, we can say what we like”, Jacinda? Your own relationship with your Aussie counterparts has to be built on friendship and respect… you can’t just hang off the coat-tails of real diplomats like John Key.

When Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern visited Australia earlier this month she said the current deportation laws were having a “corrosive effect” on the relationship between the two countries.
While there, Ardern told New Zealand media that in some cases cancelling visas was justified but in others, it wasn’t.
“We have seen cases where there is also almost no connection of an individual to New Zealand who have been deported,” she had said at the time.
“I consider that to be a corrosive part of that policy. And it’s having a corrosive effect on our relationship.”

Stuff.

So, in an attempt to stop Australia from deporting Kiwi born criminals, she has managed to fix it so that they will now deport even more Kiwi born criminals; and many of these will be people who have not even committed a crime in Australia. Well done, Jacinda! What was that about their policy being ‘corrosive’ again?

A Con Government

There is every reason to believe this is a CON government. We are being conned on so many fronts it’s ridiculous. In all major policy areas, the pictures are quite different from the ones painted by the ministers.

FINANCE

Grant Robertson would have us believe that we are doing better than any other Western economy. Donald Trump might have something to say about that! They promised no new taxes in their first term and yet so far that’s been their only notable achievement. Their big promised tax, the CGT, went nowhere thanks to opposition from Winston Peters. The closest Robertson has come to having anything to do with money was managing a $7.7 million dollar fund while working for MFAT. It is hardly a ringing endorsement for the Finance role but it probably makes him the most qualified.

WELFARE

Carmel Sepuloni has succeeded in creating a slush fund for Shane’s nephews on the couch among others. Now you don’t have to work. It’s optional. The catch cry appears to be – need money, we’ve got it. If you get pregnant and are not sure who the father is, don’t worry, it’s none of our business. But we can provide the necessaries courtesy of the taxpayers. Carmel would have us believe increases in welfare numbers are all to do with a population increase. What a joke. Her work experience before becoming a politician was as a teacher. Her only previous involvement with welfare I understand, was through her mother.

EDUCATION

A free first year tertiary education policy aimed at the likes of those in South Auckland turned out to be another joke, enjoyed by none other than the likes of the residents of Remuera, who now don’t have to pay. A more intelligent government would have made the third year free as an incentive to complete the first two. Labour’s vision believes education gives our young people the freedom and opportunities to be the best they can be. Not unexpectedly, and completely contrary to their vision statement, they closed Charter schools. It was a decision driven purely by ideology and at the behest of their Union masters. Chris Hipkins no doubt qualifies for the job of Minister as he holds a National Certificate in Adult Education and Training.

child-hospital-630x421.jpg

HEALTH

A number of DHBs in crisis. Staff in crisis. Hospitals in crisis. Ian Powell, of the senior doctors’ union, unleashed a scathing attack on the Minister of Heath, calling his political leadership fiscally irresponsible and without vision. He described the leadership of the minister as rambling, confused or nonsensical. I can’t do better than that. Unlike his National counterpart, Michael Woodhouse, Dr Clark has no experience in the Health sector.

HOUSING

Biggest shambles of the lot. Who remembers Play School? Here’s a house.
Here’s a door. Windows, one two three four. Ready to knock. Turn the lock. KIWIBUILD! No Play School but there’s not a lot of difference. The government only has itself to blame for interfering where it’s not wanted. Its job is to build state houses. They criticised National for selling state houses but conveniently forgot to add that this was done so as to get more housing on the same piece of land.

With respect to Phil Twyford, I can’t find anything related to his previous occupations, not even his known connection to Oxfam. Megan Woods has worked as a Business Manager in the private sector, a novelty in this government, and holds a PhD in New Zealand History. Good luck to her with Judith. She might need a PhD in anger management.

TRANSPORT

For the cities, Labour’s plan is an emphasis on public transport, walking and cycling. For Auckland this spells DISASTER. In many instances, a car is the only option. Work, shopping, kids’ sport, family get-togethers, kids’ parties, school; these and many other day to day activities require a car. To think otherwise is head in the sand stuff.

Ardern and Twyford were on TV recently saying the roads National wanted to build had low accident rates, hence their reluctance to proceed. How divorced from reality are they? It’s not about accidents, it’s about relieving congestion. Associate Minister of Transport Julie Anne Genter is recognised within the Transportation Industry as an expert on parking policy and the economic and transport effects thereof. It’s not stationary vehicles in parking places that are the problem, it’s stationary vehicles on the motorway. Parking herself with the Green party could certainly have serious economic and transport effects. She is totally ideologically driven.

These are half a dozen of the major portfolio areas which highlight how lightweight the personnel in Labour are. From these stem the problems that we see day after day with this incompetent government led by a woman, who we are told is still leaning on her training wheels.

A CON Government. A COalition of No-hopers.

well here's a non corrupt right winger ..all kumbaya..bol.

'And, so, to Boris. Last month in The Guardian his former editor at The Daily Telegraph said: “There is room for debate about whether he is a scoundrel or mere rogue, but not so much about his moral bankruptcy, rooted in a contempt for truth”. Johnson is a man who refers to gay men as “bum boys”, black people as “pickaninnies”, Muslim women as looking like “bank robbers” and “letterboxes”; he has conspired to have a journalist beaten up; he was sacked from the shadow cabinet for lying about an affair; ran a Brexit campaign based on disinformation; was fired from his job at The Times for making up quotes; was deemed an embarrassment by civil servants during his brief stint as Foreign Secretary; and is widely regarded as having little grasp on any of the portfolios for which he has been responsible."

10% , if Super Don gets close to 10% support from black voters that would be great , he only received 6% at the last election .

Now I  have a complaint , this topic is about cindy and her obvious failures and her useless government , how dare you link  Super DON with our under  performing useless incompetent government , shame on you ..

cropped-Ihumatao-NEWSHUB-July-25-2019-11

A reader drew my attention to an interesting point of view about Ihumatao that she read on a Facebook page yesterday.

It had the headline: Two sides to every story.

I whakapapa to the Whenua at Ihumatao. I have whanau living in the papakainga, and whanau buried in the urupa. My grandfather’s photo and those of many more tupuna hang in Makarau Marae.

I do not support SOUL.

I support the kaumatua who have spent decades fighting for iwi rights to that land and those waterways and fighting to protect wahi tapu. Kaumatua who have done so tirelessly, not through garnering limelight in social & other media, but through the court and post treaty negotiations framework and through clear and measurable opposition to foreshore and seabed issues. Who when after being knocked back again and again by the legal system in this country in their opposition to urban development on the Wallace Block, have achieved an absolute watershed agreement where the legal owners of the land are returning 1/4 of that land to Maori, along with houses within the other 3/4 that will allow iwi to live on that land, to own homes at a value preferential to purchasing elsewhere on the Auckland market, whanau who have never had the opportunity to own homes before let alone the opportunity to live in the local papakainga where the home sites are available to the lucky few.

So please read that again people, LAND THAT WAS HISTORICALLY CONFISCATED FROM MANA WHENUA BY THE CROWN IN THE 1860s IS GOING TO BE RETURNED TO MANA WHENUA. And yes – a quarter is not ALL the land. But under the legal framework that like it or not has been agreed to, anyone who has ever been involved in any post treaty settlement will tell you, we are not going to get everything back.

There has to be a point at which we as a people stop perpetuating the victim mentality and instead put our energies & focus into doing what we can with what is NOW in our power.

I do not support those that have been putting their energies into perpetuating Maori as continuing to be oppressed on that Whenua, who have presented a slick, emotive and captivating campaign, so alluring that people are blindly liking and sharing in their droves, changing their Facebook and Instagram profiles like moths to a flame, spurring people to seek petition support without seeking out all the information. A campaign so well woven visually and lyrically that it would have the untrained eye and ear think that houses are going to be built on wahi tapu sites on land that is now council-owned, rather than the actual site on neighbouring farmland that is flanked by factories.

A campaign so misleading that it has left my babies, tamariki who whakapapa to that whenua, confused and questioning why their 13 and 15-year-old friends are changing their social media profiles like it’s some cool group to be a part of. A campaign so fashionable that it’s trending on Twitter, spoon-feeding people misinformation.

A campaign so click-baitable that various groups and political parties are using it as a soap-box to promote their own agendas. What have these people been doing in the last 150 years whilst the whenua has been farmland and the kaumatua have been neck-deep in struggle with the legal system and post treaty negotiations reality?

Then there are those motivated to go to the land to support the cause, to “stand”. But I challenge those people to truly question, what are they standing for? And yes, people have a right to freedom of speech and peaceful protest, but the problem is when a one-sided message goes out to the misinformed masses, there’s always a risk a renegade person or subgroup of supporters will push the boundaries of peace. To me that’s deliberately running the risk of innocent people getting hurt. And it puts at risk whanau who live in that papakainga that don’t subscribe to SOUL’s campaign.

And yes, those whanau do exist. And honestly, if I see another selfie of someone posing with a line of police behind them doing their jobs, well… talk about turning this into utter modern era self-promotion ridiculousness!

So contrary to what the majority of mass media to this point, widespread social media and the SOUL group would have people believe, this isn’t a generalised dispute open to the public. This isn’t something the Crown should get involved in. This is a dispute between two interested parties that have gone different ways about achieving ultimately the same thing. One who after turning over all other avenues has achieved legal return of confiscated lands in perpetuity, vs another who is pushing up against a legal brick wall… for what?

  • To have the land purchased for all New Zealand?
  • To be kept as farmland or to be turned into a tourism venture?
  • To try to establish a dangerous precedent enabling access and forcing sale on other pieces of privately owned land within New Zealand?
  • To derail the work and progress that has been put in place on treaty claims already settled and pending raupatu claims?

Seriously people, think about this very carefully. […]

  • Ihumatao is not Bastion Point
  • Ihumatao is not Standing Rock
  • Ihumatao is not Mauna Kea
  • Ihumatao is a whenua for transformation through compromise.

Yes, this will go down in history and I for one will be educating my children so they don’t carry myths into generations to come.
