Jacinda has got this totally wrong

by Christie

jacinda-GOT-768x444.jpg Photoshopped image credit: Luke

Our news coverage at the moment is wall-to-wall Jacinda in Paris, in her “Christchurch Call’ bid to control the internet and stop live streaming of offensive material.

These are great photo opportunities for Jacinda of course, who laps it all up, but she is seriously on the wrong track in her current crusade.

Nobody wants another massacre like the one in Christchurch, but in concentrating entirely on the fact that internet video live streaming should be stopped, she is losing focus on the real issue.

The real issue is that we need to stop massacres like Christchurch from happening again, whether they are live streamed or not.

It was not social media that murdered 51 people in Christchurch. Allegedly, it was Brenton Tarrant. Does Jacinda really think that if a murderer cannot live stream his horrible crimes, then he won’t actually do it?

That is totally naive, stupid thinking.

Jacinda wrote an article for the New York Times, which probably gives the girl from Morrinsville a real thrill, but all she has done is demonstrate her stupidity and naivety. The article is entitled: ‘How to Stop the Next Christchurch Massacre’… and the article focuses entirely on restricting social media.

As far as I am concerned, this shows her up for the lightweight that she really is. quote.

But the terrorist’s other weapon was live-streaming the attack on social media to spread his hateful vision and inspire fear. He wanted his chilling beliefs and actions to attract attention, and he chose social media as his tool.

Social media needs reform. No one should be able to broadcast mass murder.

The scale of this horrific video’s reach was staggering. Many people report seeing it autoplay on their social media feeds and not realizing what it was — after all, how could something so heinous be so available? I use and manage my social media just like anyone else. I know the reach of this video was vast, because I too inadvertently saw it.

New York Times. end quote.

It is highly unlikely that it was seen inadvertently. Many people went looking for the video but couldn’t find it, because it was being taken down fairly quickly by most media outlets.

Whatever the murderer’s motives were for live streaming the event, shutting down parts of the internet will not stop another massacre. If Brenton Tarrant’s main objective in his heinous act was recognition, there are plenty of other ways he could achieve that. Jacinda’s pathetic little conference, which will achieve nothing, will not stop people like Tarrant. It will not stop Islamic terrorists either.

Jacinda, in her quest for global recognition, seems to have completely lost sight of the fact that we want such massacres stopped for good, and that won’t happen by banning Facebook. That just restricts the freedom of innocent people.

Jacinda’s ministers apparently have a pet name for her; they call her ‘Mother of Dragons’. Those of us who watch Game of Thrones know that the real mother of dragons wants nothing more than to be adored by her people… and that things go badly pear shaped if it doesn’t work out that way.

Perhaps those Labour ministers knew what they were doing when they gave her that nickname… but no matter what, Jacinda is doing absolutely nothing to stop the next massacre from happening. Her actions might even make it more likely. That is how naive and dangerous she really is.

How about trying to fix the real problems creating hatred toward other people......no thats too hard and virtually impossible.

Doesn't Paris look nice at this time of year.

You would almost think there was nothing to do back here eh...? The photo ops are certainly better in Paris....without the Yanks.....

Is the ‘Christchurch call’ really progressive?

by Christie

ArdernsParisExcuse.jpg Ardern’s Paris Excuse: Idea credit: WH Photoshopped image credit Pixy

In case you were wondering, the answer to that question is a resounding – NO!

Jacinda has no doubt won herself a large number of international brownie points for her serious, intense approach to the ‘Christchurch Call’ where she is adamantly trying to control the internet. In this, she is aided by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who has so far suffered 6 months of street protests over his socialist policies. The French are good at this (think of the barricades) and, as a result, it is not hard to find reasons why Macron might want to control the internet too. It is not making his government look good right now.

Jacinda looks earnest, and behaves like the first prime minister ever to have had to deal with an attack on her home soil; but she is not. Christchurch is not the first ever terrorist attack – not by a long way. Jacinda however, thinks she is breaking new ground because these things have never happened to anyone else before. Unfortunately, she is wrong on all counts. quote.

So we have made the Christchurch Call, a pledge committing governments and tech companies to a range of measures to try and reduce the amount of terrorist and violent content on the internet.

17 countries and 8 tech companies have signed up, but not the US.

The White House put out a statement on the Paris pledge though, and it was as pointed a put down, almost an insult, by the Trump Administration as you could get.
It says “the United States is not currently in a position to join the endorsement, we continue to support the overall goals reflected in the call.”

They mean we have more important matters to worry about than some touchy feely talk fest in Paris.

end quote.

Yep, that’s right. The Americans have a lot of experience with terror attacks – 9/11 being the biggest, but not the only one. They leave Jacinda for dead when it comes to this stuff. quote.

But then it makes a few very pointed comments that the USA is actually a way ahead of the game in this business of trying to get terrorism and violence off the internet.

Because the White House Statement goes on to say  “In September 2017, the United States and the other 28 members of the Global Counterterrorism Forum endorsed the Zurich-London Recommendations on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism and Terrorism Online, a document laying out non-binding recommendations for combating terrorist content online.

On February 26, 2019, the U.S. joined His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan—one of our most capable and effective partners in developing credible, alternative narratives—for an Aqaba Process meeting along with companies, civil society organizations, and foreign partners to advance our collective terrorism prevention efforts.”

So what the US is telling everybody, is that your meeting in Paris is all very well, but we were doing this stuff nearly two years ago, and we actually moved it ahead even further in February of this year.

end quote.

Ooops, Jacinda… you have been gazumped by your old friend, President Trump. They are way ahead of you… which is not surprising, since you are not, and never have been, ground breaking in anything. quote.

You can see why the US couldn’t be bothered rocking up in Paris. They’ve already done what this meeting has set out to do.

“We continue to be proactive in our efforts to counter terrorist content online while also continuing to respect freedom of expression and freedom of the press.  Further, we maintain that the best tool to defeat terrorist speech is productive speech, and thus we emphasize the importance of promoting credible, alternative narratives as the primary means by which we can defeat terrorist messaging.”

Magic radio. end quote.

Jacinda, you just got trounced by the Americans. They are so far ahead of you that it is thoroughly embarrassing.

Still, Donald Trump isn’t looking for a well-paid jaunt at the UN as his next career move, whereas you, Jacinda…

And all those other failing politicians, like Teresa May, Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron and the premier of Senegal, all took the photo opportunities and hoped like hell it would help their hopeless careers. Great company you are in, Jacinda.

Nevertheless, the UN CV looks better by the day. Doesn’t it, Jacinda. Now, how about coming home and dealing with child poverty… like you said you would?

Ardern’s total lack of logic

by SB

Even when I was only 13 years old and the leader of a school debating team, I could have driven a ‘truck of peace’ through Ardern’s totally flawed logic.

Let’s look at her first statement:

These tech companies, I do not for a moment believe they wanted to see their platforms used for such a vile heinous act

PM Jacinda Ardern

The vile, heinous act was shooting, injuring and killing all those innocent people. The tech companies played no part in the violence. They did not cause the violence and their service did not enable or arm the terrorist to shoot, injure or kill those poor people.

Let us now consider the second part of Ardern’s statement:

But she says an open internet should not mean having to “accept that these kinds of activities will happen as a by-product.”

Twitter

A by-product of the process of manufacturing and selling knives is that some will be used by criminals and terrorists to stab people. No one is proposing to regulate and control companies that make or sell knives.

A by-product of the manufacture and selling of trucks and cars is that some will be used to run people down. No one is proposing to regulate and control companies that make or sell cars and trucks.

A live stream cannot be used to kill or injure people but knives and trucks can. The massacre in Christchurch was not a by-product of a Facebook live stream. The live stream was a by-product of the massacre.

Media record and publish atrocities all the time. How many times have you seen on the news the people jumping to their deaths from the Twin Towers and footage of the planes flying into the buildings?

Terrorists have been recording their atrocities for well over a decade but before the advent of digital media atrocities still happened and terrorists still terrorised because the ability to broadcast the atrocity is not something that enables the atrocity. No terrorist is going to say, “Damn, I can’t live stream it, I’d better give up my plan and go home and take up knitting.”

Jacinda Ardern is an embarrassment. Imagine if her statements were about truck or knife companies.

These Truck and knife companies, I do not for a moment believe they wanted to see their products used for such a vile heinous act

But she says an open market should not mean having to “accept that these kinds of activities will happen as a by-product.”

While violence and death may be an actual by-product of the sale of knives and trucks, that was not what happened in New Zealand. Instead, the non-lethal by-product of the atrocity that Ardern is referring to was the live stream.

Someone needs to sit Ardern down and explain to her that her focus should be on protecting New Zealanders from an atrocity happening in the first place, not on preventing people from viewing it.

Why is she not addressing the issues of how the terrorist was able to carry out his plan? Why was he not detected by the GCSB? What is she doing security wise to prevent another attack? Viewing a massacre is pretty disturbing, but the massacre itself is what she should be putting all her resources into preventing in the future. Preventing the live stream would not have prevented the atrocity. She knows it and we know it.

To make the assumption that Jacinda had anything to do with the Trump administrations spying...when she wasnt even in a position of power during Donald Trumps 2016 election cycle.  it is a little careless, however,

what i will agree with... is Jacinda has clearly lost her way and her colours have been fully revealed!!

Corruption at the highest levels of government was already in existence pre-Jacinda.. there is always a tiny bit of hope people hold out for... that she might be a person to re-direct NZ into prosperity, but alas her actions prove this not to be the case.

It is understood within the bible... that we pray for our leaders to be led  righteously and pray for our enemies and feed them.. and by doing this it is said we heap the coals on them.

I wonder how many of us have prayed about such things!

it is also recognised in the bible.. that to moan and have discontent for those above you.. you bring about a foothold for the devil.

understandably it is diffucult to remain silent on most matters concerning politics.... and its right we speak truth to power.

but there is a fine line between moaning and speaking truth to power.

choose your words carefully!!!

Three upsets in a row that the left didn't see coming.....Brexit, Trump and now Australia.

The left media never predicted any of theses outcomes, in fact they predicted all three would be soundly beaten. The smugness of the media is that they write and promote the news for what they wish it to be, their reporting was so anti the three winners as shown above. I can hear the screeching of the Australian left from here this morning.

All their pre-written post election pieces will now be consigned to the rubbish bin.  Bloody good job.

I see Ardern hasn't bothered to ring Scott Morrison to congratulate him, just sent a text instead.

Absolutely hopeless and they will be the next bunch of lunatics to be thrown out. Ardern is much like Palaszczuk - good for photos, hugs and talk fests. The Mob soon work you out.

which would also split the labour party in halve (mad left and more traditional labour MP) ,he holds all the aces will be interesting

you could be right though, he may just look at it as a piece of paper that really means nothing anyway

Albanese has put his hat in the ring for Labour Leadership (he should have got it last time but was blocked by the Unions). He has announced that he will be abandoning the more  taxes (+$350billion) and anti mining agenda of Shorten and Bowen. What a dickhead Bowen was and always has been, much in the mould of Wayne Swan. Bowen goes on National TV and says,  “If you don’t like our new taxes on retirees, Superannuation and negative  gearing, then don’t vote for us!”. Australia took his advice and didn’t vote for them. Idiot. As for Bob Hawke passing away. Being a noted drinker, fornicator, son of a Clergy, adulterer, swearer etc, but later to turn agnostic, I wonder if Folau is right? Will Hawke be in Hell ? or does being an Agnostic put one outside the domain of Heaven and Hell? Interesting. Being a good bloke, I suspect Hawkie is propped up in the Afterlife Bar having a Coldie or two!

Government buys Kiwibuild houses

by Christie

bobtwiford-the-builder.jpg Phil Twyford Photoshopped image Credit: Pixy

The government’s flagship policy, Kiwibuild is more laughing stock than housing stock. First, after 18 months, only 80 houses have been completed, after promises that 1,000 would be built by July 2019. It is fair to say that this target is not going to be met, and the government has given up on its targets anyway, citing them as ‘unhelpful’.

As if that isn’t bad enough, the government underwrote the building of Kiwibuild houses, meaning that it would buy the houses off developers in the unlikely event of them not being sold. With a housing crisis, and so many first time buyers ‘locked out’ of the housing market, this would never happen, but just in case, the guarantee was there.

Well, guess what? quote.

The Crown underwrite for unsold Kiwibuild homes has been triggered for a second time.

The first was in April for five homes in Wanaka’s Northlake development.

Now lack of sales in Mike Greer’s development in Canterbury and Auckland means the government has had to buy back seven more.

end quote.

Canterbury and Auckland are both areas where you might well expect there to be a significant demand for housing, particularly Auckland. quote.

As a way to encourage developers to work with the government to build Kiwibuild homes, the Crown provides an underwrite.

If the houses remain unsold after 60 days, the developer can trigger the underwrite and require the government to buy them back at a discounted price. end quote.

So, 80 houses have been built, and so far the government has had to buy back 12.

Not exactly a roaring success, is it? quote.

Four are in Auckland, and three in Canterbury.

A Kiwibuild spokesperson said the programme should be looked at in its entirety, for example strong sales in Tauranga.

RNZ. end quote.

Maybe, but nothing alters the fact that 15% of the Kiwibuild houses built so far have fallen under the government guarantee. If the project was ever successful enough to build its promised 100,000 houses, that would be potentially 15,000 that the government would have to buy back.

Fortunately, the project will never get anywhere near building 100,000 houses, so the losses to the taxpayer are mitigated purely by the government’s incompetence.

That is really scary when you think about it.

The problem was that the government campaigned on private housing during the election, and completely forgot that the housing market is cyclical. High demand means high prices, but that demand always tails off at some point. By the time the fanfare had died after the announcement of the grand scheme of Kiwibuild, the market had already begun to soften. Some of this was due to projects started by the previous government coming to completion, during their ‘nine years of neglect’. Some of it was due to softening of prices and demand in key residential areas. For all that we heard of the myriad of people ‘locked out’ of the housing market, just about everyone I knew who wanted to buy a house managed to do it, and not one of them bought a Kiwibuild house. The market took care of itself, as markets always do.

The government sailed ahead with its interventionist policies, convincing themselves, and anyone else who would listen, that they were the saviours of the downtrodden. The fact that the downtrodden have turned up their noses at Kiwibuild properties in Wanaka, Canterbury, Auckland and by all accounts, New Plymouth is unfortunate.

I have always said that the government should stick to funding state housing, and leave the private housing market to it own devices. Instead, they blundered ahead blindly, at what will obviously be a considerable cost to the taxpayer. There does look to be one silver lining though. With over 11,000 people on the waiting list for state houses, there will probably be a few more available than the government was expecting… thanks to Kiwibuild. That is all very well, but this was never the government’s intention. What a bunch of incompetent fools they really are.
