Hong Kong Season

Recommended Posts

I guess it proves that if you deliver a superior product, with huge amounts of information available to the punter, and minimise environmental factors by providing decent tracks, then there's still a huge international appetite for the racing product.

All of the above seem to escape those who purport to run NZ racing though.

For what it's worth AFL [ footy ] in Aussie averages 34,000 per game over approx 200 games per season in main cities.

Our religion Rugby sees crowds dwindling apart from AB's tests.

Racing popularity in NZ is dwindling and spending a day at races with 35-40 mins between races has very little appeal.Theres so much else to do.

Throw in the changing face of our population ,the traffic /transport issues ,and its not easy to see the industry is doomed and NZ's population not big enough to turn things around.

Hong Kong pop over 7 million !...with plenty of disposable income and little to do !

u have to remember the season gets longer and longer - it used to be less than 9 months and each year it goes longer. the long intervals gary are torturous- 35 min Cambridge- minor meeting 20 min enough but what would u know owned a million gone to a million meetings-heavily involved in sport- have they asked u.and not likely to- nice article in magazine .about you. hk is unique but we have learned very few lessons from the best racing in the world.

Most of all its squeaky clean on a racing integrity basis. Even the slightest doubt or misdemeanor and your gone.

Yep suspect someone who bet against their own mount and deliberately rode to lose the race would get a lot more than seven years.

Also says that you don't need a lot of horses/racing if people identify with the product.

Makes you wonder why we feel we need so many meetings, especially when we are beaming in the best from all over the world.

Google Stanley Chin (Jockey) and you'll answer that question.

A couple of times...have not lived there or worked there !

Did some dim sun ,temples ,museums [ some oddly close on odd days ] ,ferry rides ,trams and noted masses head to Macau to casinos.

I sense you must like and know  the place !

What your views on why the betting on horses so prolific racing twice a week.?

Huge economy. Not a lot of sports betting options (football only last I checked and prior none at all) No Casino (I realise Macau is close). A small pool of racehorses with huge information available to the punter and a very well put together racing scene.

So much to do in HK so the comment on "little to do" is extremely naive. It is supported by a chinese gambling population that cannot bet on anything else apart from racing and football. No casinos in HK (albeit Macau is on their doorstep 1 hour away). They do have a good product, two tracks, a limited horse population, a competitive rating system and the very best trainers and jockeys in the world.

To be fair to Muncie, best check why they jailed him. It was (IMHO) bullshit.

Be that as it may, at best he was very foolish. My recollection is that when he was arrested he had a large amount of cash on him. Way more than what he needed to go down to the local 7 eleven to buy a coke slushy and a mars bar. It was never going to end well and it didn't. The ICAC are pretty hard arsed when it comes to this sort of thing. The positive is that he has been able to put this all behind him, plus a cancer diagnosis, and get on with a training career. I'm sure he can do and is doing well at this.

Yes KDT, but his crime was passing on info about which horses were working well at trackwork. In other words "Helping the punter". To go to jail for that was very very harsh. But, the rules are rules and that's why HK has the cleanest racing in the world - period.

I'm not saying it wasn't harsh, it was. I guess they made an example of him so that no other jockey/trainer etc would do the same. Their house their rules is how it goes.

That was kinda my point........its well documented the Chinese culture has always promoted gambling, the desire to get rich etc and of course with Gambling basically illegal in China ,Macau and Hong Kong are where it all happens.Chinese also enjoy the social and recreation side of gambling and  in HK the Lottery ,Horse racing and Football gambling is all under the control of HK Jockey Club a well respected institution and charity.

And with these events happening only a couple of times a week ,little wonder that the middle aged ,bored or stressed HK local likes to have a decent fling.

Nearby Macau of course is over 5 times the gambling size of Las Vegas .

So when I contribute a comment to a thread on Racecafe I find it childish when the response is 'have you lived there ,I have' or thats a naive comment etc .....its a fucken chat room !

Ive been to Hk,Singapore ,India , Spain ,Italy ,Aussie ,Argentina ,Chile ,Uruguay etc enough in the past 3 years and looked at racing there to make a comment in a fucken chat room...for gods sake !

My belief ,and it won't be disproved is that if HK racing was run similar to NZ betting would still be significant .

Hey this could be wrong but who cares. We all put our trousers on the same way !

Oh ,and no one has told me what other exciting things the middle aged male locals do there in the 'heat'.Too busy playing the man !

Not entirely convinced by your comments "the very best trainers in the world".  I would vehemently oppose any of my horses being trained by a "local" trainer. If you read the track work and watch the trials, I'm absolutely gobsmacked how some have a license to train, including some of the long term local trainers.  Unless of course, all is not as it seems...oh, that's right, couldn't possibly be anything questionable happening in Hong Kong, could there be?  I think there is a considerable amount of "smoke & mirrors" and no asks the question!
