TOM(the other Molloy) 1,774 Report post Posted July 8, 2017 On 07/07/2017 at 6:41 AM, gubellini said: Political patronage in this country knows no bounds. Proven business failures like Double B have no place on the New Zealand Racing Board. I have had a bit of time for David Bennett in the past but this appointment shows a lack of good judgement and doesn't bode well for the future of the Racing Industry. David Bennett is only taking the advice of his advisors(Hughes - who did, as has been stated, shoulder tap Birnie - and Allen). Politicians are like everyone else on the public payroll - paranoid about making mistakes without a back up of 'well this was my advice'. The sort of things Councils and the Government do all the time - get a consultant in. When you are in business you are forced to assess your own risks(and pay the price for your mistakes - these wankers would never be caught making a decision for themselves. No unlike NZTR meddling in the (non racing) affairs of clubs - we have them sitting in Wellington filling their pants in case something comes back on them. What the f... has it to do with NZTR whether the financial statements or the constitution comply - if there is an issue it is on the Committee of the Club you halfwits. Anyway surely Hughes has to go or as a minimum be charged with bringing racing into disrepute for this attempting to pervert the course of justice saga in Clutha Southland? TOM(the other Molloy) 1,774 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 The three candidates presented to clubs for comment were Birnie, Julie and the prominent race cafe member. We(Reefton) couldn't comment because of the fact one is my sister but why would anyone want to comment anyway when the opinions of those at the coal face are ignored. Putting in submissions on anything is a waste of time - in this case this bloke Birnie apparently already had the job(and to be fair may be an inspired choice - who knows) elbow

Berri 2,131 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 As long as he steps up to the plate and starts listening to those who have good things to contribute, we should keep him. Thirdly, keep your expectations low because he's one of seven on that board and the odds are stacked against him ever being effective anyway. But some want to give anyone a chance regardless of their background. It makes no sense, even if they've raced 90 horses. If he had extensive knowledge, experience and credibility in relation to their primary business which is wagering, then that might be a fair request. We now have a board and senior management team totally devoid of that. It's kind of like a successful restauranteur deciding to run a nightclub when she knows nothing about the music business. The results are inevitable.
Midget 4,489 Report post Posted July 9, 2017 But he's an "independent" appointment, and you have no idea whether he has any experience in wagering and or risk. Does the Racing Act even suggest appointees have to have experience in wagering ? It's a bit like the suggestion you went to vet school and the implication you're got a Ph D or the title Dr, or that you've got any ability to train or bred horses, such claims have no basis in fact and simply don't stand scrutiny. I'd argue that it should though, since that's the NZRB's core business. The Act actually says the following which means that you could theoretically end up with a board where no member has even an iota of knowledge or experience of any aspect of the racing industry. The Minister may appoint a person to be a member of the Board under subsection (1) only if the Minister is satisfied that the person is qualified to be a member by virtue of the person’s— (a) knowledge of, or experience in, the racing industry; or (b) expertise in business, marketing, or economics Patiti

Depends on your definition of "expertise". Bayliss had never set foot in a betting agency and had never had a bet when he came here. He might have had some "experience" with the Banking industry but a fat lot of good it did us. Quite what Glenda Hughes has done to attain her position ( National lackey aside ) I am still awaiting clarification on..... He's had his chance in Victoria......google him.......he's shown his hand and there's nothing we need in that hand. Those who orchestrated his appointment claim it's because he has connections with Tabcorp, presumably so we can bundle up our own broadcast rights and sell them independent of the NZRB.....good luck with that.....that mad Jackson inspired and orchestrated scheme has already failed and the NZRB has made it absolutely clear it will never allow codes to sell their own product rights independently. I'd also note that Bill Birnie is an independent appointee to a seven member board and he meets the appointment criteria, Saundry is a full time executive appointment to a code. Big difference. shaneMcAlister

Cubes 1,770 Report post Posted August 28, 2017 Okey Dokey Smokey Insiders guide to said topic 101 Cubity meets a gent in Q'twn a while back who also has an interest in thoroughbredness racing and conversation starts and said gent argues strongly , passionately and semi-coherently that change must come from within.....no point just moaning , one must get off one's backside and stand up etcetera... Cubes' kinda likes the cut of this blokes jib and agrees Months later a fellow that Mrs Cubes' husband knows calls and says would the Cubemeister be prepared to be nominated for the board of NZRB...nominations close in 24 hours....well Cubes just about fell over with blushing and Hot Fuss feelings...but rattled together a quick CV (that means a resume Hutch)....we are now in Jan 2017...... Cubes consents to a Ministry of Justice check thingy to make sure he is not a crim with a record... Radio silence ensures .... 3 weeks pass and no news... Another 3 weeks pass and nada on the news front Cubes passed the Minister of Justice thingy Cubity goes overseas for a month and comes back to find the ol' inbox empty Cubes goes bush for two weeks doing a kiwi translocation Cubes gives up on appointment to board Then everything goes quiet for a month Cubity has a couple of vinos at lunch one day and musters up the dutchness and calls the Minister to get told by a staffer he is on the short list of 5 The short list gets cut from 5 to 3 and Cubes is still in the running Things go quiet Tarquin , Cubes' mate who has a PhD in political science from the University of Taihape , suggests a donation of 20k to the National party would seal the deal Radio silence for 5 weeks Cubes then gets told (on the down-low from an insider ) that often in this situation one resume/candidate stands out....and that candidate is Cubes!!!! They like his degree in Econometrics and International Finance experience and knowledge of offshore betting platforms and blah blah blah Mrs Cubes tells Cubes to buy a new suit Three weeks later Cubes reads Bill Birnie is selected for the board of NZRB and two days later Cubes gets an e:mail saying thanks for applying but tough cookies / strong field / maybe next time Cubes strongly feels posts like this one won't help his future candidacy and quite frankly doesn't give a flying &*#$ Cubes names his next horse "Sour Grapes" Interestingly enough in the 22 week nomination / application / rejection process Cubitory was never once interviewed or even spoke to a soul from NZRB . Nor from the Ministry of Racing . Cubes and Out Baz (NZ), talk, jess and 2 others 3 1
