Berri 2,131 Report post Posted April 25, 2017 Tumblin Down...first horse to have won the Great Northern and Pakuranga Hunt Cup in the same year. In the Northern he was put through the wings with a round to go by Graham Lord falling off his horse because the iron had broken. Tumblin Down went from 4th to 10th losing 20 lengths but still got up and won. A true warrior who lived until he was 33 years old. Was also a pig hunter and a movie star ( Wild Horses). Apparently he was to be an extra but the lead actor liked him so much he ended up being the "star lead horse". Now that's what I call a great horse Black Kirrama and hedley

final luca 189 Report post Posted April 25, 2017 worked with a fella . noel murphy, who owed a jumper called boyd .. not a champion but always cheered it on for noel... was in the days when winter brothers had wonderbar.. thinking about the jump races, I don't think we have half as many of them like we did 3 or 4 decades ago.. is it because there is no money in it, or, not enough horses or the PC rat bags getting into racing admin? I for one would like to see more...

richie 1,027 Report post Posted April 25, 2017 Does anybody remember Colin Reeves,my uncle.Apparently was a fair enough jumps rider and he definitely a character,he gave up riding about 35 years ago.I dont know why, nobody has ever told me but i do know he came to races with me and dad when i was about 15/16 and i think was escorted out of course for trespassing.Dad told me that he not allowed on a racecourse but wouldnt tell me what he had previously done. final luca 189 Report post Posted April 25, 2017 just of some note, looking at what jump races we have this year... and sorry if I'm slightly wrong, we have including Riverton just gone, 32 meetings with jump races, with a total of 88 jumps races, not including the armature races. wondering , some one in jumps could shine some light, on those figures I've given, how would they stack up in the 60's, 70's and 80's. i'm sure we had lots more races. but I could be wrong.. Party Poker 167 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Been a lot of great jumpers over my time. My hero was always Cabot - you just had to have faith for the first mile that he would eventually catch the field
Blue 1,095 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Interesting PP. Light framed little horse but a ton of guts.Raced by Len Picot from Ngaruawahia. Had his first start in the amateur steeples at a Maramarua Hunt meeting at Paeroa maybe 1958?? I was too young to remember clearly. He won that race then lined up again later in the day in the Hunt Cup and finished third behind ThePeen.
gubellini 3,993 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Party Poker and Blue Cabot raced 34 times for 3 wins. His first start was as a 6yo in a Steeplechase at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting on 24/8/57. Ridden by Jim Gibbs he fell. He won his seventh start in a Steeplechase at the Maramarua Hunt meeting on 19/7/58 ridden by Mr G.R. Hudson. He also won the McGregor Grant Steeplechase at Ellerslie on the 6/6/59 ridden by Jim Gibbs and the Maramarua Hunt Cup on the 22/8/59 ridden by Danny Keenan. Blue 1,095 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 And as many jumpers are, or were in those days, not fashionably bred by Colonial stallion Royevrus, himself a son of Surveyor (spelt backwards). Our of a Rolled Gold mare I think. Black Kirrama
gubellini 3,993 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Blue Cabot was out of Ruling Gold a mare bred in 1943 by Whirlwind. Her third dam Cranbrook was imported from England.

Will never forget him, as came from my area down south, and won many open class flat races, including at Trentham. Another couple to throw in the mix, Terex and Nearco Note (who I think was gifted to either the Queen or the Queen Mother). Blue 1,095 Report post Posted April 29, 2017 Possibly not a superstar jumper but High Chief, owned and trained by Peter Wilson, was a handy little horse who won two Wellington Steeples, a Hawkes Bay Steeples and second in a McGregor Grant around 76-78. Wilson also trained and rode little Clarification mare Cabaruss. Not outstanding but won four or five over jumps including the Maramarua Hunt Cup but ran second in the Waikato Steeples, second in the Great Northern, second in the McGregor Grant with the broken tree of the saddle digging into her wither, and second in the Wellington Steeples behind Teak.Somewhat controversial the middle panel in the last fence had been flattened and Teaks rider veered out to the gap taking the line of Cabaruss and costing her several lengths only to be beaten by a very narrow margin. Protests eventually went to the High Court (I think). However Cabaruss' Council knew little or nothing about racing whereas Freda White employed keen racing stalwart and MP Trevo de Cleene who won the case and placings stood but was certainly controversial at the time. Last I knew Peter and Janet Wilson were dairy farming at Te Aroha. A while ago though. Are they still about? N1MUE 1,877 Report post Posted May 1, 2017 One of my favourites was a hurdler called Mister Divinsky. I saw him win on consecutive Saturdays at the Trentham winter carnival in 1990 (?) - the second was the Wellington hurdles. I think he went on to win the Grand National hurdle that same season. Very exciting to watch - free going with an effortless jumping style - brings back fond memories of that 3 day Trentham winter carnival. He won ten over the fences including a Great Northern Hurdles and Grand National Hurdles. Probably the best jumper Rogie has trained. After winning the 1983 Great NorthernHurdles by twelve lengths with Laurie Cavanagh up, his next start was at Moonee Valley on the flat where he ran second with 'The Babe" Brent Thomson riding. pogo(aus)
