crustyngrizzly 1,701 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 Is it possible in NZ to have slot machines at our race courses.Seems to me that it coud produce good income for the industry. I bring this up only because i have been reading about the death of Dan Rooney whose family control the Pittsburgh Steelers,The New York Giants,Yonkers Raceway and the Palm Beach Kennel Club. One of the reasons given as to why some members of the family had to sell out of the Steelers was because they operated slot machines at their racing clubs. eljay 1,720 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 I don't think so - and they open all week not just on race nights.

meomy 971 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 We heard that they, as in the powers that be, are looking at putting them into the TABS to get customers...best they get off there backsides and make TAB's more user friendly with comfortable seating, partitioned clear glassed off areas where people can listen to races on the different channels and sports when they wish to rather than struggle to follow the mumble jumble mish mash we know have. TAB's should also be open longer on evenings where there's live sports games on so those who may be out n about n don't wish to go to a bar can watch their hobbies n have a bet. Customer services goes a very long way aquaman and Los Lobos

Customer services goes a very long way I agree, I know we live in a digital world but I feel they need to work to the areas they have a monopoly as the bookmakers leave them for dead in the technology and customer service stakes. My last two visits to a tab have only reconfirmed why I no longer regularly bet with the tab. In the first instance I was denied a pen to fill out a bet slip and in the second instant on Melbourne cup day I was yelled at by a staff member to stop betting on the self service machine in the agancy as they were closing at seven pm. tasman man 11 979 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 A lot of TAB's have pokies already. Also the TAB has done up some TAB's with leather lounge chairs etc { Panmure was one] , I seriously doubt it did anything for business. TAB's are not an attractive place to hang out in. I'd doubt if many are increasing sales , turnovers in them usually dependent on a few big spenders.

Not the types one would want to encourage on course !!! Difficult enough to get half normal people there .....

lad27 404 Report post Posted April 15, 2017 That greyhound thats barks costs between 5-6k to go from pup to race dog. It's not a quick flutter. As for the pokies I watched one day while working in a bar one chap win 3 jackpots during the day. At the end of closing he was getting more cash out on eftpos. shapiro
Trump 2,741 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 I was having a beer after golf with a guy who was a guest. I asked him how his home club was going and he went on to explain all the work going on around his Club, new holes, new extensions to the clubhouse, new restaurant, new practice facilities etc etc. Very surprised I said " Fxxk me! Where's the money coming from for all this?". Without a pause he answered, " From our pokies". So asked him about the social impact of this ripping $ out of the local community from those who can least afford it and he just said, " Yeah, it is a problem". Need I say more? Pokies rip the shit out of the lower socio-economic communities and should be confined to Las Vegas, Alice Springs and other Deserted destinations - out of reach of such desperate communities. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 And who's the biggest winner? The govts thru the taxes they reap from pokies. The golf club I referred to apparently takes over $28m a year from pokies. Not sure what they would get after taxes but if 12% is a guide, that's over $3m pa. Straight from the pockets and purses of retires, people on pensions and of course, the low paid. The USA does a lot of things wrong but keeping their pokies in casinos in a few locations is a better way - I think...... crustyngrizzly 1,701 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 Could be wrong but i think Churchill Downs has pokies as does Gulfstream Park and Yonkers. Given that the company that owns Churchill Downs owns 5 racetracks i am presuming pokies are also available. Gulfsteam park also owns Pimlico,Santa Anita and Laurel Park so i presume pokies are also part of the fixture.
Turny 1,224 Report post Posted April 16, 2017 Yonkers is in fact a Casino with the trot track attached - and from memory about 5 restaraunts - was there some years ago - the trotting was separate
