Trump 2,741 Report post Posted March 30, 2017 Reading the comments from Murray Baker and James Cummings gives further vindication to ARC's strategic move of the NZ Derby to March. They credit the dominance of NZ 3yo's in Sydney with this move. So much for all the unfair criticism from some. The difference between the Victorian Derby (Nov) and the NZ Derby (March) is quite noticeable. The Vic Derby placegetters are not kicking on (eg, Sacred Elixir) compared to the March Derby. The move of the NZ Derby has certainly proved to be the correct one and allows the 3yo to become a bit more mature. If I had a good staying 3yo I would not go near the Victorian Derby. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted March 30, 2017 There are always exceptions to the rule Pogoson. Prized Icon is a very very good horse. But the NZ Derby in March has given the 3yo more time to mature.
rdytdy 5,343 Report post Posted March 30, 2017 I don't think many would disagree re the move on the Derby Ernie, however the shift of the Auckland Cup to March is another story altogether. That was a stupid move. gary1, inside edge, .... and 1 other
.... 226 Report post Posted March 30, 2017 Depends on how you look at it plenty of VRC Derby winners have gone on to win other G1's after their derby win Tarzino/Preferment/Fivendahalfstar/Lion Tamer/Sangster/Efficient/Elvstroem etc More the point you have made is that it helps the NZ 3yo staying types and the transition from the NZ Derby in March to either the Rosehill Guineas or the Australian Derby. Since the change to the derby date NZ horses have had a lot of success in Sydney. elbow and gary1
.... 226 Report post Posted March 30, 2017 Don't forget that Sacred Elixir was trained with a Karaka Million prep, then into a Brisbane Winter G1 prep, then a Melbourne Derby prep then a NZ Derby prep all in one year so he was asked for a lot and entitled to be a little tired/flat by the time the NZ Derby come around!
