puha 2,177 Report post Posted March 27, 2017 With the closer ties and deals the government is doing the Chinese regarding infrastructure in NZ has the racing minister been pushing the benefits of investing in a new purpose built racecourse here? Yeah I'm sure they'd jump at the chance to invest in the NZ racing industry. Imagine the business case!
puha 2,177 Report post Posted March 27, 2017 As Branson said today if the water is being exported it's commonsense it should be taxed etc. The Chinese are coming here in droves on holiday why not incorporate a day or two at the brand new racing complex ? Every time I stay Ridges in Rotorua fior the races the place is teaming with well heeled Asian tourists being herded onto buses of follow the well worn path of tourist attractions. All i I see is a missed opportunity for Arawa park and the racing industry in general that they havent somehow formed a relationship to entertain them at the races which is only 200 metres from Ridges lobby. bestbets, Black Kirrama, porky and 2 others
porky 900 Report post Posted March 27, 2017 I know this isn,t a political forum mate but the Arawa Park Idea sounds excellent... Unfotunately I saw the taxing water as the next step a long time ago. Don,t know how long before it hits our supermarket shelves and sold back to us ...OR Am I abit slow and it,s already happening,.... whilst we pay rates and drink chlorine

Invest multi millions in a racecourse in Rotorua for 5-10 busloads of Chinese tourists most of whom won't be interested in racing?? Surely if a Chinese person wanted to go on a racing trip they'd go to Hong Kong.

Not saying Rotorua for a new complex just stating Chinese love to gamble don't you think the course could have a meeting or two a year that embraced the Chinese mixed in with a kiwi experience? What ideas do you have? Insider
inside edge 23 Report post Posted March 28, 2017 You are not to far of the mark there Puha from what I have been hearing the drums are beating I think a big flash Hotel for the chinese is going to be built on the Arawa park racecourse some where next to Ridges... barryb 2,064 Report post Posted March 28, 2017 What about the 30k plus Brits coming here in June for 2 months, I understand 12,000 of them are in campers & that would be perfect to target them for a day or 2 at the races when travelling around the countryside. Plenty of jumps racing they could attend and experience away from home shores. They are certainly the mob that love a drink and a punt. puha, chevy86 and Pam Robson

What ideas do you have? Why didn't the government allow a casino license for Rotorua? My guess is that those buses leaving Ridges are heading for the Hamilton casino full of Chinese just wanting a bet. Doesn't make sense that one of the biggest tourist attractions in NZ has no casino. puha
Trump 2,741 Report post Posted March 28, 2017 A Casino full of pokies? You are joking. After a week or so of tourists, the local lower income people will be doing their hard earned whilst their shoeless kids line up for a Big Mac! No more casinos poleeeze! 6xes, ivanthegreat and Insider

IMO its only a tourist attraction because visitors are forced to go there by tour companies. I've been there many times for sport and races but wouldn't go anywhere near the place for a holiday. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted May 23, 2017 Chinese tourists (I suspect) pay an "All In" fee to holiday in NZ or Aust. Their Airfare, accom and main meals (flavoured rice) are all paid to a Chinese Tourist Operator. They spend 5/8ths of FA on top of that.
