Meeting between thoroughbred code representatives and New Zealand Racing Board

27 January 2017, 4:49 p.m.

A meeting between thoroughbred code interests and New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) representatives will be held on Sunday 29 January 2017.

The meeting was proposed by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) as a result of recent consultation with Chairs and Chief Executives of thoroughbred Sector Groups (NZ Trainers Assn, NZ Jockeys Assn, NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Assn, and NZ Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Federation), and a representative group of racing clubs (Auckland RC, Waikato RC, Hawke’s Bay RC, RACE Group and Canterbury JC).

The meeting will be a closed meeting, with invitations extended to these representatives, the NZTR Board, NZRB Chair Glenda Hughes and NZRB CEO John Allen.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss with NZRB the thoroughbred industry’s concerns, principally:

NZRB ‘lack of scale’ and ongoing escalation in NZRB’s cost structure;

Lack of growth in NZRB distributions to Codes;

Consequential lack of growth in prizemoney; and

Industry concerns with NZRB’s strategic direction as expressed in the NZRB Statement of Intent 2017-19, and the recent announcement regarding the advancement of a potential fixed odds outsourcing solution with Paddy Power and Openbet.

The NZTR position on these matters has been consistently expressed on a number of occasions since NZTR hosted a series of meetings with Racing Clubs and Sector Groups in June 2016.

NZTR has liaised with the Chairs and CEOs of the Sector Groups and the aforementioned racing clubs as representatives of the thoroughbred sector as a whole, in order to reaffirm the thoroughbred sector view that the NZRB must appropriately assess options and undertake a strategy that addresses the fundamental lack of scale and consequential lack of profit growth.

The January 29 meeting provides an opportunity for increased understanding and alignment between the thoroughbred sector and NZRB regarding these important matters.

Oh dear. A closed meeting between the NZTR board and the RB CEO and chair for the sole purpose of reiterating concerns about which the NZTR position already "has been consistently expressed on a number of occasions".

Sounds to me like a free jaunt to the millions for the NZTR board (the agenda?) at our expense and another complete WOFTAM, when they all work in the same building in Petone!

As soon as I saw NZTR my hopes were dashed.

I don't believe Jacko is suddenly the mesiah.  Didn't he stuff up the last time he was involved?

There's a Rangiora contingent led by Colin Wightman.

According to the Informant NZTR has organised this meeting.  I'd have thought they'd be better to sort their own crap out first.  Also hasn't it been their CEO that has pushed the wagering proposals to NZRB?  If the NZTR board is actually calling the meeting then Purcells tenure must be untenable.

I am told the Hughes/Allen counter argument will be the codes should get their own houses in order first. They will be pushing the wasted $60m from NZRB disbursements that the codes put into admin costs. Their agenda will be to push all the codes to operate out of one admin base.

Don't agree with it but that's the word retail managers are spreading through TAB agencies...........

Well, I don't really get the point of this. We all know that the NZRB performance is underwhelming and the above figures are widely available. Costs are increasing at a similar rate to net revenue. That's the whole argument for outsourcing the FOB business which they have now done. I don't really get the reason for accentuating the additional income tax the government is getting from the increased salary costs. That occurs wherever a business is growing and increasing staffing, just that the NZRB has managed to do it without any gain in net profit. I'm hoping this is not implying that the taxpayer should give the income tax back? That would be ridiculous and next thing every other industry would be seeking the same treatment. The taxpayer has already given back a large amount of duty (about 50m a year now), some 20m a year of pokie revenue that should probably be going to community funding, and the largesse to allow the racing industry to keep earnings from overseas racing and other sporting events. What exactly are they seeking here and from whom?

I hope that wasn't from some public presentation because it would look more professional if the writer could spell. "gamming duty"?

Isn't that must sanitised corporate "double speak" ??

We all know what the real agenda is but we must go through a process before we do what we've been forced to do.

I am encouraged with those words -

The outcome will be interesting, we have an organisation that specialises in diversion & under performance when under pressure (which I tend to think this possibly is once again) together with some of the less selfless clubs , teaming up with an association that is now controlled by the organisation that specialises in diversion of which it has been claimed nullified the association of its  independence , power  and transparency(when taking over the administration of the association)  making it absolutely useless ... now looking to take the NZRB to task.

Enjoy your lunch!
