TV 1 story on pokies

Recommended Posts

Because TV3 haven't resumed their breakfast show I've had to watch that dirge over on 1, it's a rather slow show, moving at about the same pace as the short term residents of a funeral home. Nerula would like it.

Anyway Hillary Barry has just had Peter Dunne on ( he doesn't mind the odd pokie rort and actually funds his own electorate's Santa parade directly from the proceeds of the addicts they exploit in his neighborhood ) and silly old Peter, who turned up in fancy dress today wearing a bow tie made from a recycled blood stained napkin, and hair by Donald Trumps stylist, he announced that whilst the number of pokie machines nationwide was reducing the volume of use ( volume or amount ? ) was increasing.

They didn't discuss the magnitude of the increase in use but even if it's minor shouldn't we be worried that something as mind numbing and addictive as pokies is trending north when punting on horses ( which arguably is far more demanding and interesting ) is apparently heading south.

Any thoughts on that ? What does it say about this industry and the product we're producing ?

Even if the Midget was interested in my views....he's not ,I'm banned and Im happy about it .......I would repeat what Ive said before.

People in the modern world have little interest in horses......to get introduced to them you need to live near the open spaces and have few other options of things to do.

More importantly folk just aren't interested in spending hours travelling to and hanging around racetracks.Even if they had modern facilities ,great coffee and $1 Beers ...no difference.

Most importantly people will not put their hard-earned on horses running around a track. To even contemplate this you need a lot of knowledge plus the many variables make it near impossible to ever breakeven or win.I think less than 5% of punters do that.

People are time poor and definitely cash-strapped.People want to live in big houses ,have flash cars ,phones ,things and their family expects it hence all the credit cards etc....thats if they have jobs ,and then they have to live in the big cities where cost of living impossible.

Even retired people with limited discretionary money now have trips to Cuba and Mediterranean cruises as essentials plus Bruce Sprinsteen concerts at $300 plus travel.

Sure people love a bet and young people especially ,Sports betting satisfies that need ,Kiwis think they know a lot about sport and the players and sport gets a lot of publicity.People dream of a big win......hence the love of LOTTO which has life-changing results. It began around 1987.

Then there are the pokies which attracts the punter who whats a quick fix ,alone in their own little space...they are readily available .

We know they are addictive and there are some serious social casualties but they are with us and part of us now ....plus not only poor people love pokies ,many established respected people in community love them. The demand is there.

Racing ..NO.......there is a stigma attached with horse betting , and being seen in a TAB.This aint going to change.

Now there is little or no publicity....the role models tend to be flawed , the participants have been getting into trouble for years they talk funny and often look funny.

Plus NZ is small ,and its easy for neighbours Australia to put on a better show........other neighbours Hong Kong have best racing in world and big punters know this.

I think its fairly obvious where the NZ industry is heading...I doubt the NZ Govt will care too much.in the good old days the Racing was one of their main sources of Taxation..not now.....the Nz Govt can't throw money at it.

Pokies are a cancer on society - the people most susceptible to falling into a spiraling addiction are generally those who can least afford it.  I don't think their existence can be justified by the benefits received by the community through grants etc, the harm caused to the families of those addicted is too great.  The whole construction of them is aimed at getting people addicted.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.  Is punting on horses really heading South?  Or is the rate of spending at the Racing Board going up faster than revenue is growing?

I don't think the increase in spending on pokies says anything about the product that racing is providing - I don't think many of those people pouring money into pokies would be putting that money through the TAB if pokies didn't exist.

A lot of stuff in there and most correct, however you are cronic defeatist & if we all gave up at a few hurdles in life then we would all be swinging from the rafters in the garage.

How about throwing up a few workable solutions instead of just giving up.

A Person who used to run the biggest Casino in Australia told me that, with regard to Pokies, "We end up with the lot - even with the jackpots to make it more appealing, we ultimately get the lot". I had an employee who won a new Mercedes at Sky City Casino in Auckland. He immediately sold it to Coutts Mercedes in Auckland. I told him to go as far north or South of Auckland it takes to buy a block of land with the money as a deposit. Within about a month he had put ALL the proceeds back through the pokies. When I asked him why, his answer was, "So I could win another car". So much for the advice and another victim falls to the spell of the machines.

Pretty sad but pretty accurate.

I cannot for the life of me see what they see in them(then again a lot of people could not for the life of them see what I see in racehorses so to each his own)

Bottom line is the takeouts mean you are always on a loser longterm

Haha barryb ,a few years back I was told I was being overly optimistic , but after over 50 yrs of experience and a ton of 'mother-in-law' research and personal observation I conclude things are terminal .

In recent times Ive joined a couple of clubs as a member and volunteered once asked to sit in on various 'discussion groups' re the industry.

Plus my involvement currently sits around $75k pa.

I think Ive done my bit.

Many negaholics on here far worse than I ,I've barely posted the past year.

I remember a couple of years back I caught your attention re picking winners and you undertook to show me how to turn a profit.

I remember you went for horses paying around the $8 to $12 mark and I am still waiting on a winner !

If things are terminal as you say & you have $75kpa involvement, then one of 3 possibilities exist.

1) You don't believe a word of what you posted.

2) You are incredibly farking stupid.

3) Filthy rich and $75k is just loose change laying about.

Probably #2 ,getting  the odd return and  ever hopeful.

$75k not huge money ,it probably costs $35 k pa to race a galloper these days.........look at the Karaka averages for yearlings

Its an expensive hobby...a passion as the Midget calls it.

Thats why racing for $7k is a disgrace and even $10k minimum makes no difference ,especially when less races are run....its smoke and mirrors.

Recently I went 2 weeks without even having a bet ,first time ever.

Plenty on here all doom and gloom ...some typing tick ,tock ,tick ,tock.

TV News stated on Thursday that NZers had lost $858.2 Million in 2016 , this was up from $828M in 2015 despite a significant reduction in machine numbers. These figures DONT include the Casino's in Queenstown , Dunedin , Christchurch , Hamilton , and Auckland.

It has to be our product N0 ?
