Insider 3,961 Report post Posted December 21, 2016 I would have thought that Bosom would have been better off sticking with Baker rather than Te Akau. There again throughout his life, Bosom has made a lot of very poor decisions, irrespective of his riding ability, on a horse. He might have got himself sorted. Certainly seems to have a nice lady to assist him. Hong Kong didn't work out too well did it? I am just saying that for my threepenny's worth, sticking with the Baker Team would be much better than going with Te Akau. I have nothing against Te Akau, I am simply saying that The Baker Team offers more, as they obviously perform to a higher level Australasia wide. Results speak for themselves don't they? I am not perfect, never have been, but I am entitled to an opinion just like you. You certainly have enough of them, why not me? You can have your opinion no problem... but leave the guys personal choices or past out of it... HK wow so in your perfect world you would have suggested he not give it a go... big call if it worked it is THE biggest racing center in the WORLD... it didn't for whatever reason but to say it was a bad decision is a bit of a stretch..in my opinion of which I am allowed too. merry Christmas time to be happy not be a grinch. gubellini 4,004 Report post Posted December 21, 2016 Opie is clearly the best rider in New Zealand. Doesn't matter who he rides for he will be highly successful. Midget 4,489 Report post Posted December 21, 2016 I have been told that Opie will be on a 6 figure retainer and Matt was on nothing. This is not gospel but did come from a reliable souse.I suppose each owner will get an account for some $ to cover the retainer. trakdap 390 Report post Posted December 21, 2016 I am just guessing here, but I would assume TA will be looking at perhaps racing more horses in Australia in the future and Opie is a proven jock in Aus. trakdap 390 Report post Posted December 22, 2016 My reasoning:- It would not make economic sense to have a six figure retainer to race in NZ alone with the way the stakes are here. La Zip and Cubes

Te Akau will pass those costs on to the owners. The question should then be asked is the "new" owner pool large enough to sustain their racing business with the added costs. Certainly stakes aren't going to help.
