Condor 7 Report post Posted September 14, 2010 ThoroughbredNEWS News Desk The Auckland, Counties and Waikato Racing Clubs have combined to set worthwhile stakes to chase over the summer months for their Group Two cup's. In a statement the clubs said that the three major Group Two Cup races in the northern region this summer, the DHL Counties Cup (2100m), Waikato Times Gold Cup (2400m) and the City of Auckland Cup (2400m) will each carry a stake of $100,000, a significant increase on the minimum stake level the industry body NZTR has set for a Group Two event. It is with a view to maintain the quality of their fields and to maximise returns to owners that the three major northern racing clubs have with the assistance of their sponsors set the stakes for these races this summer. Dennis 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2010 Fair call. The latest turnover figures have just been published on NZ gallops. Sad to say there is a lot of red ink. Probably most telling is the drop in turnover on Premier day at Hastings of 8%. As for the lesser meetings-they are down heaps. What's the answer as based on the trend in turnovers stakes will continue to decline.
Condor 7 Report post Posted September 15, 2010 Sorry? Hastings premier day is not until Oct 2 (Spring claissic, ex kelt capital). And if an 8% downturn was to be the result this year, i think one would not be too surprised considering the titanic drop in purse being on offer this year. Anyways, this would not give reasonable explanation for these cup races, mentioned above, having their stakes decreased. Dennis 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2010 I was referring to the Premier race day run at Hastings on the 28th of August. Large fields full of quality and a welcome respite from some of the dire winter racing, but still turnover down.
