NSW State Parliament Votes to Veto Greyhound Racing - It's Official Now

  • Next year greyhound racing in NSW ceases

The death knell for those involved in the NSW greyhound industry, was rung in parliament overnight.

And some might say, for the 5,000 pups born over the past six months too.

The controversial bill to ban greyhound racing in the premier state has been passed by 49 votes to 30.

The wave of industry, media and rank and file support to have the ban thwarted, fell on deaf ears.

Mind you, whether through ignorance or not, as this vote indicates, there still exists a stronger desire to have the sport banned than to have it continue.

That fact can't be ignored, but it bears little comfort for the estimated 11,000 NSW participants in the game whose livelihoods have now been shaken to the core.

Some people will be ruined financially by this state parliament vote.

To that end, The deputy premier and racing minister, Troy Grant, (who has received stern and seemingly authentic death threats through this saga) said in the statement he would now focus on getting the necessary support, including financial support, for those affected in communities.

But how do you re-employ, re-train, re-excite the thousands of 40 to 60 year olds who know little outside of how to train a greyhound for racing?

Human nature already shows us, overwhelmingly, that the market place just does not re-hire anyone over 45 years of age. Re-employment of this demographic is a MASSIVE problem that the governments, right up to federal level, need to address.

To be fair, the Turnbull Government is aware of it, hence the subsidy packages for employers who hire the 50-plus section.

Anyway, a maelstrom will follow this decision overnight.

The premier, Mike Baird, guardedly released a statement early in the early hours this morning confirming the bill had passed.

“I am pleased the parliament has strongly supported the government’s decision, because it is the right one, even though it has been a difficult one,” Baird said.

Their TV advertising, which cost hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars, was delivered over the past two weeks primarily to prepare us all for this morning's decision.

The greyhound racing prohibition bill, which includes a one-year jail sentence and maximum $11,000 fine for anyone caught organising a race after the ban, was fast-tracked through parliament’s upper house last week.

The ban starts 1 July 2017.

The laws associated with this ban are rather far reaching too, which will also impact other revenue streams for participants. Such as it now forbids people to export greyhounds to other states without the written consent of Greyhound Racing NSW before the ban takes effect.

Penalties apply there too if breached.

Baird still maintains the intel he has revealed of widespread animal cruelty within the industry, for both the greyhounds themselves and associated animals like possums, rabbits, piglets etc, is 100% accurate.

A supreme court challenge to have last night's vote nullified failed also.

As the results indicated, not all MPs were for it.

The opposition leader, Luke Foley, led the charge in the debate with a two-hour speech in which he accused the premier of a “cruel ambush” of working-class people.

Auckland track would not be very good for a housing project as not big enough and in the middle of a recreation area. Now Ellerslie or Avondale would be ideal. Only a matter of time.

Or Alexandra Park.

I'm told that in Len Clown's Auckland Unitary Plan, the land where Manukau track sits is earmarked for multi-storey apartment blocks. So yeah, dogs will have to move sooner or later. If they're still going!
