Not Breeding to your Broodmare?

Recommended Posts

New to the forum with a question, so please grant me a little patience.

If you decide not to breed your broodmare this season for financial or other reasons, is there a facility/forum where you can register your broodmare; where someone else could negotiate with you to breed your broodmare for the season?

Or is this fraught with too many difficulties; in terms of responsibility, care and other issues for it to be a realistic scenario?

An easy way to start is just give the details here and people will spread the word or even maybe interested themselves. There is also the Classified section on RaceCafe you could also put it on for free.

I think you can also advertise it on the Thoroughbred Breeders site ( not sure if you have to be a member).

The other option is talk to the stud standing the stallion you'd like to see your mare go to --they might be interested themselves or have a client who would lease it.

I haven't done this but it is a really good question. Maybe the main issues are around any costs, and at exactly what day the arrangement (lease) is to start and stop, ie does the lessee keep the mare until the foal is weaned? What if the owner (lessor) wants to get the mare back in foal at first heat after the foal is born - who is responsible for agistment costs etc when the mare goes to a stud with the new foal which belongs to the lessee? Cafers who have done this will likely have answers ot these questions.

Bazach the agreement is bewteen you and the leasee......So what ever the parties decide on who does what it entirely up to both parties and what is written into the contract.

Vacines / boosters, caslicks or not, professional foal down agistment etc. there are a few things to consider.

To complicated. Start with posting the name, age and breeding of your mare and see who's interested. Go for lease (normally three years) or lease with the right of purchase. Lessee pays for everything and gets the foals....maybe concession is that every third year you have the right to half of a foal but you will have to pay half the foals costs once born. Plenty of ways to skin the cat depending on the mare and her pedigree
