Cube's advice on how to be a successful owner

Recommended Posts

Cubes for you it is obviously all bad!!!

Either you have bad luck? You have a bad judge buying for you? You have a bad trainer? You use bad jockeys? Or it's just a bad decision for you to be involved?

Incidentally I don't know who trains for you, nor do I know the name of your nags, although most on here seem to know both given the comments that they make such as those a Friday or two ago.]

Think about it!

With a little bit of luck, good advice when buying, a good trainer, using good trainers and finally a little bit of patience, it is still fun and can be very rewarding EVEN in today's racing climate that bares no resemblance to 20/30 years ago.

Look around you at the success stories.......there are still plenty of them.

#1.....Never get involved in ownership in the 1st place , and then you might come out close to break-even

#2....Get a horse that wins a Group 1 or somesuch , or otherwise you are pretty much screwed

Cubes and Out

old chinese proverb ..

Confucius say only way to make money from racing is get top job in building Jackson St. Petone!

I  strapped for a guy who had a horse that won over 250k and it only cost him a few bags of oats to buy.

Problem was the 4/5 horses he had before a good one came along and the 4/5 horses he had after the good one departed.

To be fair he creamed it when he sold his land and stables.

How can you be passionate about frittering away 20,000 to 30,000 a year participating in a fantasy world and still call your self sane?

Easy choice then, nobody forcing your hand, move on too bigger things im sure there is other interests to spend your money on, lotto worth 40mill, casino ect, plenty out there.

I know the place that Cubes is speaking from - been there a few times myself, and nearly chucked it in.

Owning a horse gives you unmatched highs, but no doubt those highs are so good, and you can live off them so long, because of the many, many lows.

My wife talked me out of giving it all away, after yet another non-performer was retired to a good home; she said 'so what are you going to do then? It's your passion'

So I got another one. And another. And now we have a good one in the paddock that I can't really afford, but there's no way I'm not going to afford, and I can't wait for the next couple of years to pass to see him on the track - in my mind, he's already winning the Cox; and that's a very happy thought to keep me going on the dark days.

So, I don't think Cubes will give it away, and yes, we do know that racehorse ownership is a quick way to turn a large fortune into a small one, but I'm going to win the Cox Plate, take my boy to England, rent a tux and meet the Queen at Ascot - winning lotto won't get you that!

A great post, and really hits the nail on the head I think - so what if it's only a dream; life is short. The only difference between me and you Catalano is that my wife talked me INTO giving it away!

Cubes...

You will be back...you know it and I know it.

No matter how badly the low-life scum who currently run our country and our industry continue to behave, we will see them out or die trying.

Head up...have a drink, then have several for me...cheers!

All the best.

Seriously? Low Life Scum, what an offensive thing to say.

Very few of them running the country or racing would fit into that category (even Green party polys are not that), most are their trying to do good for all concerned and most are able to perform that function very well. The fact that they lack leadership & direction is not attributable to them, who in general are doing a good job and the job they are directed to do.

Low life scum is more applicable to Murders, Rapists, sellers of Narcotics etc.

Cubes is a sportsman in the true sense of the word. Takes rough with smooth and has a beer and a smile and carries on.

But we all pull our hair out sometimes. I had a run of lasts and second lasts in a row (5 I think), then won a nice race at riccarton and yesterday found out another had done a pedal bone.

Dead set - you'd have to like the game wouldn't you ?

Good luck Cubes

Hardly surprising that cubes thinks like this.

Odds are really stacked against the poor old owner. These are the people, along with the poor old punters, who are really getting it up the date, getting fleeced each month.

Yet, some on here , reckon the poor old trainers and jockeys are really finding it hard?

Well, I know who I feel sorry for, and it ain't the trainer with a new truck and 30 acre farm!

I know who I feel sorry for, your missus. By your own admission she's getting it up the date, and getting fleeced every month......when all she wants is a nice paddock of green grass....

Despite Cubes downcast post, reliable sources tell me the Kingswood will be packed up and headed Ashvegas way, where better weather and a slightly firmer track could result in a more sunnier disposition if all goes well...all the best Cubes......;)

Tongue tie off this week but same jockey. Good Luck Cubes
