berzerk 107 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 A rare event, and had the question posed to me...Apart from Sacred Elixir and Darci Brahma (2005)...what was the previous NZ trained 2yo to win a Group 1 in Australia? Our Maizcay is best NZ trained 2yo I have ever seen, but he didn't, albeit a tad stiff.
slam dunk 1,317 Report post Posted June 20, 2016 You would have to give by default a group one to McGinty. He beat the red hot favourite that next won the Golden Slipper.

And with broken leg for last part of the race. Loved the story in one book about Barnie MCahill throwing holy water over McGinty pre race to protect him. When Keith Haub had him on afterwards about his damn holy water and what had happened , Barney McCahill had great Irish logic " Without the holy water his poor leg would have broken off altogether " bestbets, Dopey and gubellini
Lloyd Vivian 742 Report post Posted June 21, 2016 Anchor In, a colt by Sea Anchor out of a Ruling mare Cazna won the Castlemaine back in 82 or 83 from memory. May have only been a G2 then. He was real top horse and Sea Anchor's first Stakeswinner. He was a certainty beaten in the Ellerslie Sires Produce behind Andretti just prior to going over for the Castlemaine...
