come on ref 155 Report post Posted May 18, 2016 There's a dog racing at wanganui that is over 6 yrs.just because it doesn't die on the track does that mean it should be racing.maybe nzgra should do a poll to decide what to do with tricky subjects. Jape 344 Report post Posted May 18, 2016 Shorty Bijou was nearly 6 and a half when he won his last race which was at Addington though most of his racing career was on the grass at QEII .And the wetter the better. There is only so much mileage in a dogs legs. The longevity has a lot to do with how old the dog was before it started racing. As a rule of thumb, if you start racing at 14 mths old, then you can expect to be all burnt out before 3. Then you must treat every trial as a race, so the more you trial and race, the quicker the mileage will burn out. Its all about planning your races and trials to a minimum. If the dog has been nursed throughout its racing life, then there is no reason not to be racing competitively at 6 yrs of life. You do get the exception like Homebush Chopper, but these are a rarity. Dogs love racing, so if they are fit and well at 6yrs, go for it.
