He mentioned IDOMENEO several times in his talks. Mind you it couldn't have helped his mood when he purchased a well bred dud by HEADLAND 11. The "Comet From The Coalfields" champion, Luskin Star was out of the Idomeneo mare Promising. All three stallions you mentioned above Crusty stood at Pirongia Stud 17 Nov 2006 | By Renee Geelen, de Kabat Bloodstock In many respects, the story of Pirongia Stud is the story of Le Filou. Many studs become defined by a horse if they stand a champion stallion, and Pirongia Stud is no different. In fact, when researching this story, it was difficult to find any references to the stud that didn’t mention Le Filou. It is appropriate as this story is about the stable block that was built for Le Filou at the stud and has a commemoration plaque at the front door. Le Filou is buried in the rose garden outside. Pirongia Stud was owned by Jack Macky, who inherited the property from his father. Originally the property was a 460 acre block that ran sheep and cattle. Jack Macky snr was well reknowned for breeding draught horses, but the world was changing. By the time that Jack Macky took over, farming was becoming mechanised and the need for draught horses in decline. Jack bought himself a thoroughbred broodmare and when her first foal was a winner, the idea that became Pirongia Stud developed. By the 1950s the other farming activities had been phased out and the stud was fully established. The first stallion to stand at Pirongia Stud was Contact, followed by Triumvir and Duccio. Le Filou arrived in 1951 and not many would have thought he would be so defining. Typical of horses imported at the time he was beautifully bred, but no superstar racehorse. He may have become too expensive for NZ buyers if he hadn’t been injured as a 3yo after winning three races (one at 2). According to the thoroughbred breeders stallion register of 1951, Le Filou stood his first season at 125gns. This rose to 200gns in 1963 (after winning the sires premiership in 1961-62) and was 500gns in 1966 at the peak of his career. His full stud career yielded 406 foals over 17 crops (only 24 foals per crop on average). When the races won by his progeny were put into the black type system, he had left 56 SW (an amazing 13.8%) and 22 Gr1 winners. Included in this are eight two mile Cup winners (Melbourne Cup: Light Fingers, Red Handed. Auckland Cup: Floutulla, Senor. Wellington Cup: Bon Filou, Michael Molloy. Brisbane Cup: Fulmen. New Zealand Cup: Noir Filou.) He also left the winners of four Derbys and three Oaks. He was crowned Champion Sire four times in 1961-62, 1963-64, 1965-66 and 1966-67. In 1967, just after being crowned Champion Sire for the fourth time, his 11 yearlings sold for an average of $3,395. He was the second leading sire by average (from Alcimedes at $5,012). That year, 293 yearlings averaged $1058.50. The top priced yearling of the sale was $12,000 and the top priced yearling by Le Filou was $6,000. Le Filou died in 1969 and was buried outside his box in the stable block that was specially built for him. A concrete structure with 12 boxes and a small staff quarter out the back, no expense had been spared in its construction. In his obituary in the Breeder’s Bulletin of Dec 1969, it is stated that Le Filou would have a lasting legacy as a sire and broodmare sire. This has become true and Le Filou went on to be crowned Champion Broodmare sire several times. In addition, Jack Glengarry once claimed that every horse inbred to Le Filou had been a winner. One of those carrying this duplication was the ill-fated Oaks winner Wharite Princess. There are plenty of examples of horses out of Le Filou mares. Top broodmare sire and racehorse Vice Regal is out of a Le Filou mare, and champion racehorse Lonhro’s fourth dam is Gay Poss an AJC Oaks winner by Le Filou. Zabeel is another who feels his influence, as his fifth dam Vaneuse is a three-quarter sister to Le Filou. Linebreeders might attribute the good record of Zabeel over Vice Regal mares to this mix. When Le Filou died in 1969, Pirongia Stud was 300 acres of lush farmland looking towards Pirongia Mountain. The post-Le Filou era of Pirongia Stud has been hard to research. They stood the sires Idomeneo, Ironic and Headland. The 1980 stallion register was the last time the stud appeared in that publication. When Jack Macky died, the property was sold and was split up. The stable block remained on a property that was about 60 acres. This was split up again and the stable block now exists as part of a 12 acre property on Macky Road. When the current owners bought the property, there was an old wooden house and a huge run-down concrete stable block on 12 acres. They started to renovate the house, but asked each other ‘what are we going to do with that huge concrete building?’. On discovering that the wooden house was rotten they decided to make the stable block into a house. Imagine a house with a hallway as wide as the alley way in a stable block. In a nice touch, each room retains the tie up ring that had been concreted into the corner of each box. The property still has the other horse facilities, such as lunging ring and nicely fenced paddocks. And in full circle the house, along with Le Filou, is now for sale. A piece of NZ’s breeding history passes on. Let’s hope that whoever buys it respects Le Filou’s final burial place under the rose garden. gubellini, Black Kirrama, Baz (NZ) and 6 others

Yes Micky Blackadder trained Old Timer in Reefton. While a handy horse (as was Country Manners who Rod Collins trained out of Timaru) they were not of stakes class which is the theme of this thread. Country Dance was a reasonable bread and butter type stallion in the south but I am sure Flying View would be his only stakes or G1 winner elbow

Funny thing Gubes, I don't think, overall, English Derby winners have been a raging success at stud though you can probably clarify that. I remember as a kid my Mum had a round cake tin with a picture of Never Say Die on the lid. Another English Derby winner I think he was a flop at stud. At one time there seemed a propensity for NZ to get sires by derby winners out of Oaks winners but was never a very successful recipe.
