Even lotto is struggling. Big Wednesday went, now replaced by a standard draw. At least lotto react, if the big Wednesday wasn't doing any good that is the right thing to do.The tab would have continued throwing money at it!!

You can't compare lotto with racing. Lotto is a game of chance, no one can pick random numbers, so punters treat it like a lucky dip sort of thing. They also state when the jackpots are up, so I never feel ripped off when I buy a ticket.

But punters betting into these pools are getting ripped off.Sure, most of us know, and stay well away from these pools, but there always seems to be amounts in these pools, so some must just not know what is going on.

As I have some free time at the moment, I sometimes have a bet on the american racing the tab show. No money in the pools in nz, so they give me no choice but to bet with betfair, these pools are very good. Same with the us harness. Tab have wall to wall racing each day, yet I am sure punters must be leaving in droves. Tab really need to merge quickly, before it is too late.

For the record I have no interest in lotto.

I've thought for a long time now that this policy of the TAB scooping up carryover pools to use for whatever stupid idea they come up with next is outside their mandate and indeed legalised theft. The difference between Lotto and the TAB is that when a Lotto pool jackpots EVERYONE KNOWS WHERE THE $$$ GOES. Since the TAB's incredible failure to fail to lock in co-mingling with their Australian counterparts, they have tried to encourage NZ punters to keep betting into the TAB pools by using unstruck funds from NZ meetings to enable them to offer these terminating quaddie pools in Australia and guaranteed first fours on every race. I would be very interested to hear the consumer institute's thoughts on this practise, although from my recent experiences they seem reluctant to hold the NZRB/TAB to account over any of their many extremely dodgy practises, which would not go unchecked in any other civilised country where there are gaming boards whose mandate is to protect the punter. Not here. Here the TAB basically do whatever the fuck they want. The only consolation is slowly but surely they are destroying the industry in NZ and forcing their dwindling customer base to look for other options which thankfully can be found in abundance off-shore. Not sure who the blame lies, whether it is with the awful Glenda Hughes, Purcell or the idiots who put them in the positions they now currently hold.

I fully concur with the comments re TAB management. But if you want something thats is just criminal consider this.

Auckland central is a vast bustling city yet apart from a TAB  in the viaduct and a Sports Bar in the same area there are no full TAB's with cash facilities. Victoria St TAB is closed. The Casino have thrown out the TAB and just have a hard to find self serve machine. The Pub Tabs mostly have a self serve that staff have no idea how they operate so in the area taking a large circle from the town hall which encompasses Karangahape Rd, through to Newmarket, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby down to the viaduct there just are no TAB's.

This where the TAB could have access to half a million people as they come and go.

That wont happen.  The way they are running the show has got the backing of the minister.

The same Minister who has not a clue about NZ Racing....if he did he would be making the changes we need.

Turning up to the AGM once a year to read a statement prepared by the fools he should be firing says it all really.

No arguments at all here. Well said.

Just another high ranking waste of time. Uses lots of nice sounding words and phrases but says and does nothing of any use to anyone. Well placed in politics. Not racing

I know WAY too  much about this to comment but fuck it I am going to anyway. The situation in the Auckland CBD is geared to benefit one operator whose previous job was Northern Area Manager for the TAB!!!!!

Interesting ... I think I know the guy you mean, he is/was operating on the North Shore.

You could even expand that TAB-less Grey Lynn/Ponsonby area further west to include Avondale/Pt Chev/Mt Albert. They closed the Avondale TAB a couple of years ago, probably because the lease ran out, but never bothered opening another one.

The TAB in Avondale should have been located inside the Avondale racecourse in the first place. Bit like Epsom. Racing Board spent a fortune renovating it until someone pointed out why not just have one next door in Alexandra Park. Boils down to the members of various Boards starting with the Racing Board. They all exist off reputations in their own sphere and imagine being clueless about the racing/gambling industry is a prerequisite.

Speaking of Avondale the area near the 1600m chute is a strategic piece of land. I wonder with the recent cutting down of 1600m races there is an agenda to sell it.

I hope so. Its a crack house with a track on it.
