It would be a terrific gesture of those attending and celebrating the Melbourne Cup in 2015 to have some form of Green and Gold colours on as a tribute to James Bartholomew "Bart" Cummings AM (14 November 1927 – 30 August 2015).

THEY are instantly recognisable as Bart's colours - the set of jockey's silks that have been worn by the riders of so many of the trainer's champion racehorses.

The green and gold diagonal stripes and white cap have been worn to Melbourne Cup success by Harry White on Think Big (1974-75), and to major race wins by jockeys on gallopers like Leica Lover, Leica Show, Dayana, Cap D'Antibes, Vivarchi, Century Miss, Beau Zam, Let's Elope and Roman Emperor.

And in an acknowledgement of Cummings' phenomenal training career, the Australian Racing Board and Racing NSW has organised that the Hall of Fame trainer's racing colours will be preserved for the exclusive use of his family for at least the next 50 years.

"Bart's famous green and gold diagonal stripes will be protected for the next 50 years," ARB's Peter McGauran said.

"This is just a small gesture to honour Bart's 60th year as a trainer and the wonderful contribution he has made to Australian racing."

Cummings has trained an extraordinary 266 Group 1 winners and 757 stakes winners including a record 12 Melbourne Cups, seven Caulfield Cups, five Cox Plates, four Golden Slippers, 32 Derbys and 24 Oaks.

We were very disappointed that this service was not also transmitted on good old fashioned Trackside Tab radio.

It's insulting to those that enjoy there races and have been introduced to the industry through maybe a workplace Melbourne Cup sweepstake that included a Bart Cummings trained horse and be told by customer services at the TAB 0800 number to listen to it livestreaming on the web.

Do those that operate our TAB & broadcasting facilities not realise some people have to use there computers for work as well and others are out and about working, including at the coalface in racing, and only have access to traditional radio at that hour?

Wake up and get into the real world of your customers.

What will they call this gorgeous filly?

Bart Cummings death: Foal whose mother was closely related to Saintly gives birth on Sunday
  • 7 days ago August 31, 2015 9:00PM

THIS is the filly that was heaven sent.

The broodmare Holy One gave birth to her foal at 9.30am on Sunday at Princes Farm – just hours after their owner, racing legend Bart Cummings had passed away at the homestead on his beloved property.

The filly’s mother is a close relation of the champion Saintly, the racehorse Bart bred, owned and trained to win the 1996 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup double.

To complete what seems almost a holy trinity, the filly foal’s sire is Roman Emperor, who was trained by Cummings to win the 2009 Australian Derby.

Broodmares usually give birth under the cover of darkness but this filly’s arrival came well after daybreak – and as the nation became aware of the death of the great racehorse trainer.

There has been a sincere and heartfelt reaction to Cummings’s passing as he was more than just a champion racehorse trainer, he was an Australian icon.
