THE TORCH 665 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Nope...you've got me...what's the answer? Flippe van der Merwe. He weighed a massive 19 stone but was freaking quick over the 100m. The first test of that series was a brutal affair. Name the South African forward that Cowboy Shaw sorted out in that test (so much so he didnt play another Saturday match on the tour), and the South African back who polaxed Brian McKechnie with a late hit?? Eben Jensen was the forward....it was at a lineout on the 22metre mark...broadcasting side of the field....not sure who was on attack though....and of course, it was a 'Cowboy Special' that got him, i.e. the ol' left-hook! As for the back, just trying to recall who was in their backline for that 1st Test....can't remember who was playing 9, Naas Botha was at 10, 12...not sure, 13 was Danie Gerber, 14 was Ray Mordt, 11 was N.Botha's brother I think ( or someone's brother ) and 15 was G.Pienaar.......so I'm picking that it was either Gerber or N.Botha. rosemary telephone operator 1 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Torch...another one of 'Cowboy's Greatest Hits' came in a Test v Australia in '79 at the SCG. Who was the Aussie forward that he cleaned out that day?
Bradez 5 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Lemington?Where are they BRADEZ?Will you eat Lamingtons at the aftermatch spread:D Is this for Hockey? Lemington dont have a hockey team. But any team in the Waikato area would cop a 20 nil thrashing from my club team on any given day. Lemington this Sunday is Rugby! THE TORCH 665 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Torch...another one of 'Cowboy's Greatest Hits' came in a Test v Australia in '79 at the SCG. Who was the Aussie forward that he cleaned out that day? I can remember the photo in the Annual where he makes contact with Williams* jaw. My all time favourite All Black is Cowboy. Jansen correct (Haden: "Hey Cowboy sort out their No.6 would you?!"). And it was Gerber. The Truth newspaper got a frame by frame set of photos of the incident. McKechnie was parallel to the ground from that hit. Gerber would have been a great in any era. Jeez they were a good team in '81.
Cat 25 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Lemington dont have a hockey team. But any team in the Waikato area would cop a 20 nil thrashing from my club team on any given day. Lemington this Sunday is Rugby! My meaning was that "Lemington" is spelt Leamington..it is in/near Cambridge. Not even sure if their rugby side exists any more,so much has changed in the Waikato with the merging of clubs. What club rugby side you play for and what grade? How come you are playing Leamington?? Cat 25 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 . Gerber would have been a great in any era. Jeez they were a good team in '81. Danie Gerber would be in my all time great 15. That Springbok side drew 12-12 that tour in controversial circumstances. Against who and why?
Properispomenon 1 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Danie Gerber would be in my all time great 15. That Springbok side drew 12-12 that tour in controversial circumstances. Against who and why? The NZ Maori at (I think) Napier. The controversy was that the last ditch Boks dropgoal that tied the scores didn't exactly meet the usual criteria for successful dropgoals in that it neither crossed the crossbar nor bisected the goalposts... Brian Duffy awarded Beck a drop goal that thousands at the ground swore had missed. Brians nephew is one of my best mates so he gets mocked a fair bit . Properispomenon 1 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 100% correct.I was there and was glad to finally see them play after being at Waikatos rugby park weeks earlier:cool: Ah I missed the whole tour, catman - the only game I might have gone to was the Second Test at Athletic Park ... and that was the Test the Boks won... I did go to the brilliant Wellington-Manawatu game the day after the final game of that tour ... and you could almost feel the relief, joy, whatever that the thing was over... On a bynote, did you get refunds for your tickets to the Waikato game at all?
Cat 25 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 On a bynote, did you get refunds for your tickets to the Waikato game at all? They gave us a choice...a Refund or the chance to throw full bottles of beer at the hippy freaks who ruined our game of rugby. I chose the beer throwing... Cat 25 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 No-one has ever made me mad enough - yet, anyway - as to make me want to throw full bottles of anything alcoholic at them! Well considering I was only 14 at the time my comment was very much tongue in cheek:D The behaviour of the Rugby crowd, looking back nearly 30 years now,was very restrained I thought. A mob of 2-300 stormed the ground and halted a highly anticiapted rugby match. 30,000 paying spectators were separated from the hooligans by...well..nothing except a few ill equipped Police. It would have been quite easy to deal out 'backyard' justice right there and then. Instead the hooligan mob were safely ushered away under police escort, with only an errant few crowd throwing missiles. Me?I was pretty pissed off.Rugby and Politics,I couldnt understand it then.I just wanted to see a good rugby match between my Heros from the mighty Waikato and those fearsome Boks I'd heard so much about. My sentiments exactly Cat with regard to politics and rugby. A lot different now though. I couldnt believe why Robertson and Mourie made the stand they did, but of course they had every right to. I went to the Taranaki game with my grandad and the most vivid memory is of Louis Moolman hitting a ruck bound to a fellow Bok. Christ they were big boys. The noise outside the ground by the protesters also sticks in my mind. An extraordinary tour for so many reasons. The 3rd test is an absolute epic and one which my dad was lucky enough to attend. The next year he went and saw the decider vs Australia. When Gould scored their spectacular opening try he lept up and applauded (solely for the great skill on display). Someone in the crowd behind him took badly but was promptly told to %&$# off by his mate. I could never fathom why I was never allowed on those trips as a 10 year old
