Rambling_Kidd 160 Report post Posted November 29, 2014 At Otago, race 2, the horse Wild Bill seems to be seriously overladen with tire irons ! 59.5 for a ONE win horse !!!! Below him, there are the Hand -- 5 wins 3 sec 10 thirds .. 58.5 Can Boy -- 4 w 3 s 4 thirds ...... 57.5 Squash -- 26 starts 4 wins ....... 57 No Roses -- 30 st, 3 w, 6 sec, 7 thirds ... 55 and another two multi win horses on 54 !!!! What goes on in the mind of the handicapper ? Very similar to the problems G Sanders faces with a couple of his horses. The real bummer is, this horse BILL, is a gutsy consistent horse (like Sanders two) and will keep trying no matter the weight, but seriously talk about pushing it uphill. rdytdy 5,343 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 RK, you omitted mentioning The Hand of Faith has had 53 starts, Carniva Boy 41 and that Wild Bill has had 8 starts for 1, win 3 seconds and two thirds and has the highest rating of 66 in this R65 race. Wild Bill finished a close up second again beating all the horses you mentioned above. Having said that, yes the current ratings system does make it hard for those horses that perform ie, win and place consistently. Run down the track and get your rating lowered accordingly, that is how it works. We also know what that encourages also. He did drop a point for that 4th at Riccarton but will go up again after today's run.
Leggy 4,089 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 Having said that, yes the current ratings system does make it hard for those horses that perform ie, win and place consistently. Isn't that what handicap racing is suposed to do Ted? Equalise the chances of all runners?
rdytdy 5,343 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 Exactly Leggy, I was meaning about being able to move back down through the grades ie 5 win horses in R65.
talk 308 Report post Posted November 30, 2014 Consistent horses can certainly be worse off than inconsistent horses under our handicapping system. An ammendment that would help alleviate this would be to put a limit on a horse's rating. ie one win horses have a limit of 65, two win horses have a limit of 75, and 3 win horses have a limit of 85. tony

How can you effect handicaps if you limit the penalties and relief that the handicapper can provide?
nek minute 296 Report post Posted December 1, 2014 i think its a bit stiff to put a 1 win horses above the 65 rating that means he either has to run in a 75 with no weight if he gets in the field or keep carrying 60 odd kgs in 65 grade in other words put a claimer on the horse if you want to get a result even though the horse may need a senior rider. or carry the bus and make the next 2-3 starts worthless except for getting a few points off
Rambling_Kidd 160 Report post Posted December 1, 2014 Exactly, how can a one win horse be top of the handicap ? Unless it was a stakes grade superstar, not a 18,000 dollar placer ... And he run a gallant second again which of course will lead the handicapper and his handicap friends to consider themselves right ..
