rdytdy 5,341 Report post Posted October 19, 2014 As far as stake money goes most owners and trainers would prefer to win the Melbourne Cup I'm sure. It's the world's richest handicap race at $6,200,000. The Cox Plate is worth is worth less than half, $3,050,000. From a breeding aspect then the wfa Cox Plate would probably take precedent. Rambling_Kidd 160 Report post Posted October 19, 2014 Well, not coming from a racing family (it skipped a generation) and never hearing of a cox plate till 1980, I would say a Melbourne Cup would be the ultimate racing trophy for the cabinet. Nearco 125 Report post Posted October 19, 2014 To the purist, it's a no-brainer. The Cox is run at Weight For Age, the way all real Classic races are. The Melbourne Cup is a handicap, albeit a rich one. If the handicapper gets it right, all the horses cross the line abreast. Winning the Cox means you've beaten the best horses at level weights. Fair & square. How many MC winners go on and distinguish themselves further ? Nearco

But I think the Cox Plate has lost it's gloss in the last few years as the WFA stocks have gone down. Cup horses like Dunaden, Red Cadeaux have competed around the world and I think it's becoming a better race overall whereas the Cox Plate is lacking the star power it once had. Lloyd Vivian 742 Report post Posted October 21, 2014 If I had leased out a mare and didn't stand to gain from the prizemoney - I'd rather she won the Cox Plate. Otherwise, the romance, glamour and prizemoney of the Melbourne Cup are hard to overlook. mckenzie
Bear 30 Report post Posted October 21, 2014 Might And Power won a Cox Plate after winning the Melbourne Cup Makybe Diva won the Cox Plate, a Tancred and a Sydney Cup after winning a Melbourne Cup Viewed won a Caulfield Cup after winning the Melbourne Cup, so did Dunaden Fiorente won the Australian Cup after winning last year's Cup And who wouldn't want $3M over $1.8M? In this part of the world surely any "horse" person wants a Melbourne Cup over a Cox Plate Cubes
