Portfolio 728 Report post Posted August 19, 2014 Portfolio Don't quite see what in my post prompted you on the blubbering mess line. Interesting to see you weren't even aware LM raced in Australia - kind of tells a story doesn't it. As one of the people I work with says - " don't argue with idiots - they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience" I take it those you work with never argue with you?....... Sounds like ya workmates are trying to tell you something.....
Portfolio 728 Report post Posted August 19, 2014 While I don't always agree with portfolio, there does seem a few on here that are a little precious. Keep going portfolio, the harness section can go days without anyone posting, when you fire us up, everyone wants to have a go at you. Good one. Talking about lord module, I remember going to the races when he was having real problems going away at the start, he even fell over at the start being a pig. What I can remember very well was the booing as this horse tailed the field as it came down the straight. Not just a couple booing, a whole swag of people. I remember hands down, scotch tar and others missing the start, but never heard the booing. Lord had a real love / hate relationship with the punters. I am glad punters do not boo as much now. Homes dg got a bit of stick after winning cup, but it was due to World Cup result rather than horse. Bit of a shame really Good on ya kakaman..... Precious they are......went for a run last night, thought of Ashoka......got the old chariots of fire humming going on.....then thought of the module flying home out wide....but got the stitch pretty quick !! I pulled up quick, and didn't want to run any more, and fell to the ground with no thought of going anywhere for several minutes.....So yep....I do feel like the mighty Lord Module at times. But Kaka......I still do not think Hands Down was a better horse than LM, so get real.
Portfolio 728 Report post Posted August 19, 2014 One of the most enduring memories I have of Addington racing in the 1980s doesn't involve a superlative performance by a horse at all. My memory concerns Norton, a top horse trained by Patrick O'Reilly sen. Norton won the Louisson Handicap, Easter Cup and PanAm Mile and other prestigious races. I cannot recall the race now but from memory it was an open class handicap. On this night, there was a schmozzle turning for home and a horse fell. Norton, driven by class reinsman Kerry O'Reilly, smashed into the fallen runner and fell and O'Reilly shot straight into the air like he'd been ejected from a fighter plane. He must have soared four or five metres into the air before hitting the track with a thud that could almost be heard from the grandstand. It was a sickening sight and I still remember it and the shocked reaction of the crowd vividly. True Janitor, mop and bucket..... Norton was top class, I think he might have had a few injury problems as well. Amazing thing was that 3yo crop, I think someone has mentioned it before on here, ...Mr Woodchips, Mels Boy,Enterprise, Hilarious Guest ,Ansett, Mai Mai, Me- Portfolio, ( not the reason I have called myself that thou, but I will take it,) Camelot, Glen Lustre, Joy Boy and Kata Hoiho. Best crop ever, All of these raced in OC company, or if not got very close.

Good one Porty Just as a hint - people generally find witty responses funnier if the person trying to come up with something doesn't take 40 hours to do so....... and of course if it is witty it helps as well. Agree....HD was a real good horse. Went from a bit of a pig early on to good open class horse. And his win in the NZ cup was good, looked beat turning for home. The crop you quoted were a handy bunch, but with the possible exception of Hilarious Guest, not a standout amongst them. Certainly nothing that would make anyones "Top 20" list. Pretty much every year produces a dozen 3yo's that would have gone on to cup class in the old days. But since getting to "cup class" hasn't been the aim of the game for the past couple of decades, it's hardly an indicator of anything anymore. tasman man 11

I didn't state any would get on the top 20....but how many other crops of 3yos went on to win so many races.....like those I mentioned? Camelot won a NZ Cup and Enterprise won an Auckland Cup and a derby too if I'm not mistaken.

Had a look on HRNZ on how many races those nags won.....Mr Woodchips-9, Mels Boy-11, Enterprise-23 , Hilarious Guest- 21, Ansett - 9, Portfolio - 9, Camelot - 13, Glenn Lustre - 7, Joy Boy - 15, Kata Hoiho - 7, Norton - 15. Then there was a few good mares that I had forgot about.....Tact Boyden - 7, Rain Girl -12, Steady Lady - 9, and Dab Chick -7. I had a look at a few other crops...and while some years obviously had better hoses racing.... I couldnt find a 3yo crop that went on to win so many races. Amazing stats - you might be right it is the winningest crop of 3yos... Remember Joys Boy running off 100m hdcps and the like later in the career at places like Hutt Park??? (memory may fail me there on hdcp and tracks !)

Yes, a great crop and the likes of Enterprise, Portfolio and Camelot would have won more races except they had to contend with a fairly good nag called Roydon Glen who was almost unbeatable in prime condition. lestom 25 Report post Posted August 20, 2014 Not a bad line up either, not quite as good . Was Miss Bromac that year? I thought she was racing up against the other horse list posted. Won 4 or 5 from memory, a far better mum than racehorse, I think we can all agree on that one. she was indeed and agreed Derby was from this crop too. chelseacol 2,488 Report post Posted August 20, 2014 Funny you mentioned Ansett. A mates father trained it, and the trainer and connections always thought they were a bit unlucky to race up against Hilarious Guest. Raced in a 60 inch hopple, and was clearly dominant in those filly races. Peter jones had a great run in the 80s, hands down, tussle, hilarious guest, portfolio, laser lad. Will be many more that I can not remember Borana as well for PJ
