aquaman 1,352 Report post Posted July 3, 2014 Was informed last night that the people running Manawatu are considering shortening the distance for the Nancy Cobain Memorial from the present 767 mtrs. If this is correct ,then they have rocks in their heads. Greyhound racing needs all the distance racing it can muster. Shortening the distance to meet 2nd rate breeders that are only capable of producing 300 mtr stock is short sighted, selfish, and a blight on Nancys memorey, not to mention the quality breeders that have been producing good stayers. The incentitives need to remain in place for distance racing for it to succeed, and i don't mean 600mtr races, but rather 700+. Breeders need certainty as breeding takes yrs. We are just now only beginning to see the fruits of this through Teagan, Thrilling Brat, and some of the Cleeve dogs. Dumbing down is not the way. chiknsmack, gary1, bblunt and 4 others

mrzim 338 Report post Posted July 4, 2014 Having worked and lived at Nancy's for a couple of years i know both Nancy and Ivan would be turning in their graves at the thought of this happening. gary1 and dustydreamnz
punkrock 127 Report post Posted July 4, 2014 Reducing the already minimal 700m races that nz have is just a disgraceful decision. There is no reason the Nancy cobain can't be left how it is and a new 660m race invented by the new club if they so desire. All it will cater for is a few out graded c 5 dogs to fall in in a group race rather than a genuine stayer. Very poor. gary1, Jabba2, Alesha_666 and 4 others
WhoKnows 791 Report post Posted July 4, 2014 Wonder if the new president Paul Freeman has anything to do with it, he must have a few dogs that suit the new distance, can't think of any other reason, a disgrace. softlysoftly and Jabba2

better be good 17 Report post Posted July 13, 2014 If they do then at least they may get 2 heats, or more rather than 3 distance dogs running for a great stake only having to beat 5 others making up the field
dustydreamnz 493 Report post Posted July 13, 2014 If they do then at least they may get 2 heats, or more rather than 3 distance dogs running for a great stake only having to beat 5 others making up the field This is exactly the sort of negative comments we don't need. Okay, we're never going to get 8 Swift Fantasy's running around but we need to be positive and promoting distance racing. Encourage breeding, up the stake money and promote it more etc. It's obviously struggling at the moment but it could work if people did the right things. softlysoftly, josh77 and aquaman

better be good 17 Report post Posted July 13, 2014 Dusty the money is there and has been for some time. Its very hard to import dogs now let alone a stayer.Where are your stayers going to come from? The price has gone up to bred a litter. Years ago stayers use to come in all the time,Bar l brando who dealt to them in the silver collar and NZ stayers cup. So what they are doing is not working. What more can they do? Slim Shady 479 Report post Posted July 13, 2014 Okay, we're never going to get 8 Swift Fantasy's running around You might you know!...her first litter are apparantly coming along very nicely, potentially a couple of smart ones amongst them, looking forward to see them at the races. dustydreamnz
aquaman 1,352 Report post Posted July 13, 2014 If they do then at least they may get 2 heats, or more rather than 3 distance dogs running for a great stake only having to beat 5 others making up the field Attitudes such as this is the very reason distance racing is struggling. This is a good example of short sighted, woolly, clouded thinking that has seen genuine, quality, Greyhound racing decline to the point that genetically crippled dogs are now ruling the roost. Example, inferior stamina stock that now dominate our racing. Our domestic turnover is now so low ,that if we had to survive on it ,an open class middle distance race would struggle to be $500. Lower the sprint prize money by 20% and increase staying prize money by 20% would be a nice start. I don't think the staying prize money is good at all. alltheway!!! 640 Report post Posted July 14, 2014 Compared to the sprints and middle distance, staying prize money is good. You only need a stayer that can run and you'll be sure to make a few $$ Alesha_666
dustydreamnz 493 Report post Posted July 14, 2014 Per race it's good I agree but there are far less races so way less money overall. We need to promote more staying races.
alltheway!!! 640 Report post Posted July 14, 2014 Stayers are not machines, most stayers do tend to need a break as many of them are just not built to run 700. How are they going to host more staying races if they struggle to make up fields for 80,000 dollar races.
