Breeder 607 Report post Posted June 23, 2014 To take up Berri's challenge and to inject a bit of life into the breeding threads I'll have a go. My 3 selections from the Select Sale are just from looking at the catalogue --I did not go to the sale of any yearling parades. That is, I have not seen the yearlings. So mine are : Lot 919 Thorn Park x Accompli ( colt) bought by N. Tanner Auckland Lot 1012 Roc de Cambes x Consumer ( filly) went to Christchurch Lot 1015 Makfi x Cotton ( filly) passed ( hopefully Gerry Harvey will race it ) Join in for a bit of fun and add your selections. Berri 2,131 Report post Posted June 24, 2014 Well done guys. Any chance you can give me how much they made. I'll frame a competition on it. I will start an XL spread sheet and try to fill in some gaps as they come to light. And what about you Swynford? All you have to do is dust down the computer and have a go. Be a shame if you didn't. I personally only go on type and use a gizmo we've invented to see if type and ability match up. Then I throw in a functional neurology program, a data monitoring system and a whole bucket load of luck. I've been lucky enough for that luck to rate a mention at my eulogy. Breeder 607 Report post Posted June 24, 2014 Hi Berri My lots --Lot 919 $ 30K Lot 1012 $30K Lot 1015 passed $18K reserve $25K On another matter ; there was a very interesting article about selecting a suitable sire for mating using DNA profiling in the Guardian recently. I picked it up in a thread on Thoroughbred village ( breeding forums). I've tried to copy the URL link onto here but cannot get it to work for some reason. But it is well worth the effort to look it up -- easiest through T.Village ( post title =" How genetics can create the next superstar race horse ")

Berri 2,131 Report post Posted June 26, 2014 I thought we were doing this exercise strictly on pedigree. I see a bit of bias leak based on a number of other factors. Becomes obvious once you look at the selections being given.
Lloyd Vivian 742 Report post Posted June 26, 2014 Were you referring to mine Berri? I chose the Premier one on pedigree without seeing it and the two from Select I happened to see on the day and they stood out on type, for me initially. Obviously, they also appealed on pedigree, being by Savabeel and Pins respectively and both from good families. Am I missing something?? Breeder 607 Report post Posted June 26, 2014 Berri I'm not sure it matters but maybe others who add to the list can state if they have selected primarily on pedigree or type.
Abernant 37 Report post Posted June 26, 2014 One breeding factor over many years is breed the best to the best and no regard for pedigrees it will be interesting if the experts can prove otherwise
Berri 2,131 Report post Posted June 27, 2014 I'm not really accusing anyone of doing anything but I wanted to make sure that we were talking the same language. We had swynford showing us mating patterns and the challenge was that if anyone is that good, then they should be racing many good horses. So what we really should be doing is setting up a corporate competition, run beautifully with very cool media data and reporting, that gets people to select horses PRIOR to the sales based solely on pedigrees. That way all these theories will be tested. One thing about Swynford, he seemed to back down very quickly and has yet to record any selections. Says he/ she has nothing to prove. That I question.
