racingsouthdude 38 Report post Posted June 14, 2014 If there was to be a review show on trackside ie RACING RETRO who would you like to host it.i would have to put KARYEN FENTON-ELLIS at the top of the list.

mckenzie 600 Report post Posted June 14, 2014 Didn't we used to have a NZ Racing Retro show on a Sunday morning prior to the invasion of Aussie programs on either Action TV or the old Trackside? There was NZ Retro that started 10 or so years ago that was based on the Australian version, I recall Karyn 4 or so years ago saying the show was going on a summer hiatus and I thought that's odd, why would you go on hiatus at the peak of the racing season? Surely enough the show never returned and they never explained why. The show was interesting in the mid 2000's when Luke Radich and other guests provided worthwhile debate (most memorably the Darci Brahma Champion 3yo Award debacle) but a few years later they made an obvious effort to avoid discussing contentious topics and it became purely reviewing races and not talking about the tough issues (I presume a few people at the top felt it was too much of an avenue for criticism). I suspect that mentality is why the industry is in the position it is, they think that avoiding asking difficult questions will make them go away. porky 900 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Just my thoughts...but i think NZTR should have weekly current affair racing programme as suggested McKenzie with a link on NZTR web page so people can view when-ever, at their leisure... Des Coppins/George Simon/ to ask the hard questions maybe. and some top horse/jockey/trainer/owner/breeder life stories and other interesting viewing. Ohokaman 5,760 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Some new blood please. Who preferably know what they are talking about. They must be out there...?? From within the Racing Industry...look at the Aussie shows. Dufficy, Freedman, Johnston etc. Mind you Matt Browning and Greg Radley are quality anchormen and that helps. Getting Jockeys and Trainers on after race day as they do over there would be a good start. Although the Australians all seem comfortable in front of cameras and can talk sensibly....not sure ours are.. sunlineboy and Chevy50
rdytdy 5,335 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 A Retro Show has to be entertaining and informative. Karyn does a great job on The First Call but in my opinion a Retro Show requires a different skill set. My picks to front such a show would be, Tony Lee, Bruce Sherwin, Aidian Rodley would make an excellent Andrew Bensley and either Des Coppins or Mike Brown. There is probably someone else suited that I have forgotten about at present also. Baz (NZ) 1,719 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 Tommy Hazlett, Alexander Fields, zzz zzzzz, George Simon, Chris Wood, Steve Davis, Reese Jones, Brent Wall, Tony Lee or Jayne Ivil would do. Throw in some guest trainers and jockeys and other personalitys. No Racing Retro or Off The Rail stars here in NZ...but lets start work with what we got. porky

scooby3051 10,695 Report post Posted June 15, 2014 I'm sure they would like to shut down Race Cafe as well. Notice the common theme, they are almost paranoid about it. scooby3051 10,695 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Tony Lee was a loss as a race caller and on trackside. Now that was a proper race caller, and for the powers that be to let him go was a tragedy, a huge loss to the industry, as a person and a personality. Peter Jenkins 2,120 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 The problem for any Retro program, as it was last time, is that due to being paid for by the Racing Board, it would need to be ridiculously politically correct. A private TV Channel such as TV 3 or Maori TV could get a big audience by putting on a such a show with minimal expense. Tony Lee may even accept a job as host if the Racing Board/NZTR weren't involved. Then people could speak their mind and say want they want (within legal boundaries) without fear of their jobs. hedley 1,900 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Eureka! . . .that's the right avenue to pursue who Can't foresee..that all we 'pine' for as both the content and the personalities..would eminate and evolve From this neutral avenue., but an Avenue with a massive viewership up and running, it would recreate inquisitry and kindle To our thoroughbred industry! hedley 1,900 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 with the industry having ditched Free.to.view clients, then this new avenue would go partway to reinstalling the communion and comradery that we've had taken off us., all positive fostering..that's for sure

Ha, aint that the truth. Kiwi's are basically good people but would rather show a limp wrist than have a barney or create controversy. Especially if they're employed by NZRB/NZTR. Witness a radio exchange today with Daryl Anderson and Grant Nesbo Nesbit. Anderson asked Nesbo about the streaker, Nesbo replied that he thought the streaker was harshly dealt with. Anderson then said he thought he got what he deserved. Nesbo "yea you're probably right".
Turny 1,224 Report post Posted June 16, 2014 Like yours and PJs posts Hedley - succinct and very accurate. The tragedy off this "free to View" removal is that isolation and departure is much bigger than they "think" In my (very) serious investment group of about 10, 8 have not had a bet since the removal, and a couple of them were very serious. The "turnover loss" would have been in the "thousands monthly" - lost to the Casino and Betfare - oh for a 5 minute meeting with the "chiefs" - just to bring them into my "real world" - they just don't see it porky
