Lisa Chittick loses her battle Tue, 13 May 2014

The thoroughbred industry is reflecting on the life of one of its most popular members, Lisa Chittick, who lost her fight this morning with leukemia.

The wife of Waikato Stud principal Mark Chittick, the mother of Charlotte, George and Harry and a member of the O’Sullivan family, Lisa had been fighting leukemia for the past 14 months. The final stage of that battle took place in Los Angeles, where she has been with her family for the past six weeks.

“It’s a terribly sad time for us all, Lisa was just a wonderful person and a big part of so many people’s lives,” said Mark Chittick’s father Garry this morning. “As well as being a dearly loved member of the O’Sullivan family, Lisa was an integral part of our lives and of Waikato Stud.

“She wasn’t just Mark’s wife and greatest supporter, she played a huge part in the stud, she was full of energy and ideas, and the place will never be the same without her.

“Lisa was great fun, she enjoyed the glitz and glamour of racing and she was the first to tackle whatever needed doing and got the job done.

“The decision to travel to Los Angeles for further treatment was typical of her fighting spirit. The glimmer of hope that was offered by what is a new and revolutionary drug kept her going, but in the end she was not one of those fortunate enough to respond to it.”

Lisa passed away with Mark and her children at her bedside. “We’ve spoken with Mark and the kids and they’re very accepting of Lisa’s passing,” added Garry.

“On behalf of the family I have to extend our gratitude to so many people from around the world who have provided massive support to us all through this very difficult time. It has been truly appreciated.”

Such sad news. I don't know the family personally, but my heart goes out to Mark and his kids - such a tough blow in life. And to the O'Sullivan family too; a tragic loss. My sincere condolences and prayers, that the words of this Psalm may be true for you all:

Psalm 34v18: "The Lord is near to them that have a broken heart."

You can bet on Lisa's farewell being a party

Lisa Chittick loved only one thing more than dressing up and going to the races - the party afterwards.

And while her family and friends at Waikato Stud were mourning her passing yesterday, they were already making plans for a party to beat them all in her honour.

Chittick lost her 17-month battle with leukemia in a Los Angeles hospital yesterday, surrounded by her husband Mark, three children Charlotte, George and Harry, and a few close friends.

In her typical never-give-up style, Chittick, daughter of retired champion trainer Dave O'Sullivan and his wife Marie, flew to the States six weeks ago after being accepted on to a trial programme for a new cancer drug.

Father-in-law Garry Chittick said while Lisa was very sick and hardly in any condition to travel, she insisted on making the trip.

"In an ideal world she would have been at home but when this opportunity came up she jumped at it. Even though we missed out on being with her, Mark and the kids were there and that was a big thing for them."

Garry Chittick said since Lisa was diagnosed with leukemia the day after the 2013 Auckland Cup, she had bravely tried to maintain her extraordinary joie de vivre, and enjoyed two periods of remission.

"Lisa didn't have a lazy bone in her body," Chittick said. "She played a big part in Waikato Stud and its marketing, along with Ange (Bridson). She loved the game and was just outstanding with our clients.

"She had a good bit of cheek about her, but it worked for her.

"She loved nothing better than getting dressed up and going to the races and had a huge amount of fun out of the horses, winning big races with horses like Legs, Glamour Puss and Daffodil.

"She named every horse on the place - spent a lot of time doing it - and if I tried to interfere she told me where to go."

It was a passion of Lisa's even in the days when she was part of the successful O'Sullivan racing stable when Dave and Paul O'Sullivan and champion jockey Lance O'Sullivan were household names. She once fell in love with a cute filly with four white feet which her brother Paul bought at Karaka and put together a syndicate to race her, including her mother Marie and sister Debra.

By the sire with a South African name Volksraad, she named her Zola, after South African-born Olympic runner Zola Budd, and revelled in her big wins which included the 1988 Ellerslie Sires' Produce Stakes.

Lisa was involved in all aspects of the running of Waikato Stud, which she and Mark developed into one of the most successful operations in the country since taking over its management in 2012.

In January, the stud was leading vendor at the Karaka yearling sales, its 46 yearlings fetching $7.6million to finish clear of 31-time leading vendor Cambridge Stud.

"Mark and Lisa were a great match." Garry Chittick said. "They lived on the property and it has been a real family operation, even the kids were involved." Chittick said his son and family were due home at the end of the week and he expected Lisa's body home the following week.

He expected her farewell to be a "big go." "I think it will be a bring a plate and bottle party. Lisa loved a party and celebrating the wins.

"And if she was lucky enough to win a good race, she always included the staff in the celebrations.

"Lisa had a very open house and a huge number of people through it. And she was a wonderful cook.

"She will be very sorely missed."

James, you have very big shoes to follow in.

We are sure Lisa would have a cheeky comment to say to you at this time about "cutlery wrappping".

Lisa Chittick with James Whitfeld

The racing and breeding world has lost one of it's brightest and warmest personalities, with the passing of Waikato Stud's, Lisa Chittick yesterday in Los Angeles.

Lisa has been fighting Leukaemia since March last year, and she lost her arduous and confronting battle yesterday from a hospital bed in LA where she had been flown for treatment a little over 6 weeks ago.

Lisa, the wife of Waikato Stud's owner and manager, Mark Chittick, was an instrumental cog in the Waikato wheel, and would be known to all those who had ever visited the Waikato Stud "shack" at the NZB sales. Lisa was also integral in the marketing and promotions of the stud.

Lisa could only be described as an energetic and magnetic personality, who attracted people to her with her warm and caring nature. She had a talent and interest in good food and could make a mean dinner, especially her baked salmon and amazing beetroot salads! Her ability to have fun and enjoy whatever she was doing is best illustrated above, where she was photographed having "cutlery wrapping" competitions in the Waikato Shed at the NZB Sales last year with our sales vet, James Whitfeld!

Lisa is survived by Mark and their 3 wonderful kids, Charlotte (Cheeks), George, and Harry, all of whom were by her bedside when she passed.

Lisa will be sorely missed by everyone in the racing and breeding industry in not only NZ but also Australia. She was from the famous O'Sullivan family racing dynasty, and both sides of the Tasman are in mourning for this wonderful and resourceful lady today.

Our thoughts are with Mark, the kids, and both families at this time.

My heart is breaking for the families and friends of Lisa Chittick.   To me she is a name and a voice on the old Radio Pacific, back in the day,  but I know how involved she was in the industry  -  a beautiful and passionate woman!! :(

I'm glad that donations are being made to Leukemia and Blood Foundation  -  my daughter died in the Critical Care Unit following 3 weeks in the isolation ward of the foundation, almost 4 years ago,  of complications after a bone marrow transplant.  The pain of the families will be immense.

RIP Lisa  -  I know you well deserve it after all the suffering.

Wouldn't it be a lovely tribute to Lisa if all those that knew her & have placed messages on various Facebook pages (Waikato Stud/ NZ Equestrian etc) all joined a syndicate in memory of her?

Of course it would have to be a horse that was bred by Waikato Stud & trained by her brother Lance O'Sullivan at Wexford Stables.

It would also be one way for some to partake in ownership of a horse that may not otherwise be able to.

Just a thought & it is one way to remember Lisa's contribution to The Sport of Kings & to ensure her passion & memory lives on.

Sad, Sad Times

They say that tears are 1% water and 99% feelings – that could not be more true – especially when we reflect on the loss of Lisa Chittick – her loss is just so wrong on every level.

Many beautiful words have been spoken and written about Lisa since her passing last Tuesday – we all grapple to adequately express our love and our sense of loss.  Words seem so empty.

We all send our love, support and hearts to Mark and Charlotte, George and Harry and well as Marie and Dave O’Sullivan and Mary and Garry Chittick and Lisa’s entire family.

In honour and with huge respect for the compassionate, warm, smart and stunning woman Lisa was – and will always remain in our hearts and minds – the Waikato Racing Club had a minute’s silence after the Waikato Steeplchase presentation at Te Rapa on Saturday – silence enveloped the entire course, the riders came out of their jockey rooms – as we saluted a wonderful woman – which we share with you:

Losing someone you love rips your heart into pieces and throws your life into chaos and the future is never quite the same.

Last Tuesday we were devastated as the news filtered out from LA that Lisa Chittick has lost her gutsy battle with leukaemia.

Many of us knew Lisa – dynamic, determined, smart, vibrant – a woman who wove magic wherever she went. She touched lives and created change.  She was driven, innovative, compassionate – a beautiful woman from the inside out and back again.  A woman who left an indelible impression on our lives and who will forever remain so loved and so respected.

Words seem futile – to Mark, Charlotte, Harry and George – this industry weeps together with you and with our loved racing families the O’Sullivans and the Chitticks.

It is so very very hard to say goodbye to the ones we love – who have so enriched our lives.

Please join with us in now across the course today and stand as we observe a minute’s silence for the loss of a woman who had so much ahead of her. You will always remain in our hearts and memories – LISA.

A tribute from Catwalk Spinal Trust

CatWalk farewells an original

The CatWalk team are incredibly saddened by the loss of one of our original CatWalkers. Lisa Chittick passed away last week after a 16 month battle with cancer.

As an integral part of CatWalk’s launch in 2005, Lisa’s role was critical in setting up the Trust. Lisa’s enthusiasm ensured her brother Lance O’Sullivan could only say yes at the request to take up a role as a CatWalk Patron. A great horsewoman and businesswoman, she was known for her constant drive and infectious energy. She will be sadly missed.

Lisa is survived by her husband Mark and their three children Charlotte, George and Harry.

Fitting farewell for 'shining light' Lisa Chittick Last updated 05:00 24/05/2014

Chittick Fairfax NZ GONE TOO SOON:

Lisa Chittick In life the effervescent Lisa Chittick liked to get things right and in a final statement she planned her own farewell and as those who knew her well would expect - she got it right.

Chittick passed away last week with her husband Mark and children Charlotte, George and Harry at her bedside in Los Angeles where she was undergoing treatment for leukemia she had been diagnosed with 14 months earlier.

Yesterday her family was joined by hundreds of people at the beautiful Waikato Stud near Matamata which the Chittick family has developed into one of New Zealand's leading thoroughbred nurseries over the last 20 years.

They were there to farewell a lady who had made her mark on their lives in her all too short, but remarkable, 44 years with music, laughter, champagne and tributes.

After an earlier service at the Church of the Holy Angels in Matamata for family and close friends, the Waikato Stud gates were opened, under cloudy skies, for the brightly clad gathering to pay their respects.

It was at Chittick's request that the dress code be bright and colourful, a perfect match for her personality.

As Henry Plumptre, Darley Australia's managing director and long-time O'Sullivan family friend, said in his eulogy, "a shining light of the thoroughbred industry has been extinguished".

He recalled the fun and laughter Lisa Chittick brought to many occasions and, conversely, the absolute professionalism she brought to her role with Waikato Stud.

Plumptre was one of a number of family and friends, including her father, legendary horse trainer, Dave O'Sullivan, who spoke about the wonderful influence Chittick had been on their lives and the lives of many.

The gathering, included a who's who of the thoroughbred industry, and on the stud lawns under a huge marquee, they listened to songs from renowned opera singer Malvina Major between reminisces of Chittick's life, before she was taken in appropriate style, by horsefloat, to her final resting place at the Matamata Cemetery.

Waikato Stud staff, wearing the stud uniform, formed a guard of honour as she was carried from the marquee to the horsefloat.
