It always amuses me when armchair experts make comments' like this on stud fees. I seriously doubt anyone on this chat site would have the gonads to fork out $10 mill for one of these stallions. If you did then you might start to work out why there stud fees get set at the prices they are. Compare them to almost any of the new sires in Aus and you will see they are fair value.

In the event that any of you breed a horse that might make the grade as a stallion prospect I'm fairly sure you will try to sell him for as much as possible - just like every other owner.

Adaption to the market. You are selling to NZ breeding market not Australia so you are not comparing apples with apples. Of course, owners will try and get as much as they can if they have a stallion prospect. Everyone is breeding to make a profit, or at least try to and that is why people probably have the moan of fees being expensive. Its a risk for the breeder too you know not just the stallion owner!

Hi Fitzy, Thanks for your reply. It doesn't really matter what studs pay for their stallions, as with anything, the consumer will in the end decide whether it is worth the money.

There is a reason (well probably a number of reasons) why the number of thoroughbred mares served has gone down from over 8,500 in the mid 1990s to (as I understand it) somewhere between 4,000 and 5,000 currently. Most people are not in the 'game' to make a dollar, but because they love horses and are passionate about them. But small time breeders have deserted like rats from a sinking ship. Stud fees are not the only reason, but overall costs, including silly amounts being charged by studs for daily agistment,  certainly helped kill my enthusiasm.

PS. I liked your response Jess.

A few further months down the track now and Ocean Park is starting to look the goods and moving nicely up the 2nd season sires table in Australia. Will be sitting 4th after another Metro win today..

Looks set for a good Autumn

He looks like his progeny require a bit of time/a staying type of stallion and is making progress, but with the numbers and the quality of mares he has served he has only made a fair start you would suggest in comparison to other first/second season stallions.

Hopefully does make it and is still a good chance, but plenty of work to do going by these stats.

39 Runners for 13 winners. 1 Listed winner and 1 Listed placed horse.

It does not surprise some / many of OPs progeny take time. His damsire is Zabeel. The damsire is not taken into account anywhere near enough in a lot of people's thinking re a stallion, in my view.

Also OP was best at 4 & 5 and better at 2000m or slightly over.

OP didn’t race at 5 and fairly sure he never raced past 2000m.

His numbers of winners is enormous and I’ll be surprised if a few top liners don’t come along.

Pretty sure he won a 2040m race of some significance.

I think we can accept that the Cox Plate is technically a 2000m race Huey. He never ran past that distance is the point.

I stand corrected on the 5yr old racing. Finished in March 2013 and the 2040 is why I used the word "slightly" but again I take your point.

But my initial comment was meant to say he did not really get into gear until the spring of his 4 year old year. I am not meaning to knock OP --I agree with you that really good ones will come in time. I was surprised to see how he had fallen out of favour at the sales this year. Some wise old guy ( cannot remember who it was) once said that patience is the best thing you can have as a horse owner / trainer.

Anyone read the stuff article on Jon snow at stud in the south, interesting photo of him.

I don't think the photographer specialises in stallion photography. Good publicity for them anyhow, and good luck to them. Could be just what the South needs.

To be fair, I don't think think you could blame the photographer, looked like he needs some condition on him.
