Opo 182 Report post Posted April 3, 2014 MANA So David Rankin, a Ngapuhi of the Te Matarahurahu Hapu, believes that a Treaty settlement will restore the mana of Ngapuhi that was attained by his ancestor Hongi Hika who, on his return from England in 1820, used the muskets he had obtained to initiate the Musket Wars. These resulted in the deaths of between fifty thousand and one hundred thousand Maori in internecine fighting until the peace that was brought about by the signing of the Treaty. Hongi's 'taua' or war parties plundered and slaughtered thousands in Waitemata, Tamaki, Waikato, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, and Rotorua .On his return to the north in 1825, to restore his mana and that of his fallen comrades he slaughtered the prisoners he had taken. His notable success in agriculture, crops grown to trade for muskets, was considerably aided by the work of his slaves. That, Mr Rankin, is some 'Mana' to restore.- Bryan Johnson http://forum.nzcpr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=46668#p46668
