Racecourse Drunkeness

Recommended Posts

Drunkenness at Ellerslie is nothing new.  I remember Auckland Cup Day 1968 old men staggering their way from the beer garden to the old totalisator board betting area.   The only difference now is, the authorities are making their presence felt to stop drunk driving.   Yesterday, there were two road blocks in our area where I have never seen road blocks before only breath-testing people, not the slightest bit interested in Registration and Warrant of Fitness.

It always makes me laugh when people go on about binge drinking and NZ's problems, and how it is getting worse etc etc.

As you correctly point out it is nothing new.

Anyone who has drunk at a pub in England or Australia will also tell you it is not a uniquely NZ problem. If you have been to Cheltenham or Aintree, or Flemington it is also not solely a problem on NZ racecourses.

I would venture to guess that 90% of the people involved are little or no trouble as well. But those 90% have their enjoyment restricted due to the 10%...

I agree with your sentiments, with the exception of the percentage of troublemakers.

The percentage, in my opinion, is less than 2%, in all probability, around 1%.

I base this on a lifetime of observation and participation. The number involved always appears much bigger than it is because of all the innocent parties that get caught up in trouble through no fault of their own.

As an aside, I have heard it suggested that the so-called "drinking culture" discussed here is a product of what are termed Anglo-Saxon countries. New Zealand, Australia and England fall into this category.

Cheers!

I imagine you are absolutely right.

I raised this point because it was not the drunkeness that offended me; it was outright agression of the three drunks.  Very ugly.

Later on one bloke, who had been trying all day to get one of the lovely young maiden's to win his Cock's plate, backed a maiden in the last race at Melbourne.  A delightful and happy drunk.

That's a great story.

Goes to show that not everyone is predisposed to acting like a dick with a beer or eight on board.

Those of you who have been to Vegas will be aware that in the right circumstances people can wander up and down the street with liquor of all kinds, in and out of casinos and drink all day and night, and minimal trouble. Of course they are being treated like adults, and security take the approach of dealing with those who are out of control, rather than ruining everyone else's fun.....

I'll stop making the same point over and over now :P

Those of you who went to he Hokitika wild food festival prior to 2007 or there abouts  will also know about happy drunks in the streets.

It was all good until the dickheads     arrived and forced the councils hand in introducing a liquor ban.

Yeah interesting side note over 700 were killed on the roads in 1973 and only in the 200's this year.Rose tinted glasses about yesteryear perhaps?

Back in the early 70s mum would pile us all into the falcon, no seat belts in the back and front ones unused.

The back seat was usually a brawl within a mile.

The cars were  very solid back then and this didn't help people survive high impacts.

Fords - one of my mates had a Mk 1 Capri and woke up one Sunday morning to find it not 'out front' so rang Mr Plod and reported it stolen. About an hour or so later the nice constable knocked on the door and said we have found your car... it is 2 doors down parked up their driveway....we found it by following some footmarks in the frost and it took us over your front lawn and over the fence to the neighbours and then over the next fence. :D
