hedley 1,900 Report post Posted December 12, 2013 TV OneNEWS: ThurDEC~12th_13 Boy, 12, pleads with politicians to protect whales http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/boy-12-pleads-politicians-protect-whales-5775886 A 12-year-old Upper Hutt student campaigning to stop Japan from whaling in the Southern Ocean took the day off school today to deliver a 5000-signature petition to Parliament. Maidstone Intermediate student Isaac Scott called on members of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee to put an end to whaling. "We are a nation that takes pride in being eco-friendly in every way so I ask you to stop the whaling now and declare to Japan that we truly care about our environment and the marine life within in," he told members of the committee, including Labour's spokesperson for foreign affairs David Shearer. "Be the change you want to be in the world." After his address, Isaac told ONE News he had been nervous making the speech but said it was "pretty good" to deliver the petition after 18 months of hard work. "It was pretty exciting. I finally got it off my chest so it feels pretty good," he said. He wants to see the Government deploy naval ships to protect whales from being hunted in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary - a 50 million square kilometre area surrounding the continent of Antarctica. While commercial whaling is prohibited in the sanctuary, Japanese ships continue to hunt for "scientific" purposes. Japan has killed more than 14,000 whales in the name of science since 1986, most in the Southern Ocean. Mr Scott said he had been passionate about the marine mammal since he saw a Beluga whale when he was 2-years-old. "As I get older my passion just gets bigger and bigger because of their size, their intelligence," he said. "They are just majestic creatures." Mr Scott, who is a youth patron of the National Whale Centre, is one of the youngest people to make a submission to a select committee. His mother Trudi Scott said ONE News could expect to see the 12-year-old back in the halls of Parliament again one day. "I don't think you've heard the last of Isaac Scott yet," she said. hedley 1,900 Report post Posted January 28, 2014 Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians Page (official) added 36 new photos to the album Striped Dolphins January 28, 2014 — at Taiji Japan. It was nothing short of a horror movie this morning in Taiji. The killing cove was a bright crimson blood bath after an entire family of 60-65 Striped dolphins were savagely murdered. This morning the Striped dolphin pod was found by the killers at approximately 8am and by 9:30am the pod was netted into the confined space of the cove. The dolphin killers pushed a majority of the dolphins under the tarps and began to slaughter one by one. While the sound of thrashing was heard from the shore and the cove water turned red, 5 dolphins remained swimming only feet from the crime scene. Panicked from the sight and sound of their family murdered in front of them, those dolphins became injured, entangled in nets, and spy hopped out of the water to beg for mercy. Their fight and pleas fell on deaf ears as the killers ruthlessly murdered them in the same horrific manner the dolphins witnessed only minutes before. By the end of the morning, an entire family of 60-65 Striped dolphins, that included babies and juveniles, was nothing more than slabs of meat loaded onto skiffs and used as seats for the killers on their way to the butcher house. hedley 1,900 Report post Posted February 24, 2014 allaboveboard Progressive - R85 Members 266 posts Posted 23rd February 2014, 04:46 PM Man kind has apparently evolved in the last 50 - 100 years. Whales were once seen as being a food source only that were as thick as pig shit. Now most of us see them as magnificent and majestic creatures. Those of us fortunate enough to experience a close encounter with a whale speak of a very moving experience. Some have cashed in on that and organize whale watching tourism. Many tourists speak of that event as being a real highlight and recall it fondly years later. Whenever there is an unfortunate whale stranding Kiwi's rally around to help. Those involved also speak of it being a very moving experience. Despite that and worldwide opposition to whaling we still have the Japanese arrogantly killing and harvesting these magnificent creatures under the absurd guise of "scientific research". How can the Japs get away with such arrogance? How can our wimp politicians standby and allow it? The reason is clear. TRADE. The Japanese market is important to NZ and don't the Japs know it. As a result they can get away with doing whatever they like. The NZ Government on behalf of NZ People bend over and take it right in the arse. This sickens me. During war time NZ soldiers always had a reputation for being courageous. In more recent times most of the rest of the world applauded our anti nuclear stance against the Americans. How does that marry up with the NZ Government meekly allowing something that the majority of kiwi's find abhorrent? Here's another interesting situation. During WWII a relatively small percentage of German Soldiers in the Nazi Regime committed unspeakable atrocities mostly against the Jews. Germany has been paying for it ever since. No sign of forgiveness. No sign of moving on. Just guilt trip after guilt trip after guilt trip. NZ trading websites refuse to allow the sale of German WWII items that reflect the Nazi Regime. That is despite a very strong demand for such items from military collectors who are rational intelligent people who just don't want big gaps in their collections. Trading websites are happy to tell these adults what they can or can't collect. We all find the Nazi regime abhorrent but you cant change history regardless of how unpleasant or distasteful it is. Then we have the Japanese situation. Many many Japanese soldiers practiced diabolical and barbaric torture against huge numbers of people during WWII. They took great delight in coming up with sadistic forms of torture. Among their victims were thousands of New Zealand men and woman. How would those Kiwi victims feel about the Japanese now? They would be feel more torture from the grave. Despite that there has been enormous forgiveness toward the Japanese. It is perfectly acceptable to buy and sell military medals in NZ that reflect the very soldiers who tortured and killed so many New Zealanders. The way the Japanese have arrogantly responded is to hold NZ to ransom and force them to standby and do nothing over the "scientific research" killing on an ever increasing bigger and faster scale of a creature most Kiwi's admire and respect. The arrogance of the Japanese is astonishing and not far removed from the 1940's "Japanese are Superior" to the rest of the world mindset. The mindset of the NZ Government on the other hand is 150 million miles away from the bravery previous generations of New Zealanders displayed against the all mighty Japanese. hedley 1,900 Report post Posted April 1, 2014 1st/4/'14 The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that Japan’s so called ‘scientific whaling’ program breaks international law and must stop. Over the last 25 years, more than 10,000 whales have been killed in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary by Japanese whalers. That ends today. The judgments of the ICJ have binding force and are without appeal. Thank you and congratulations to everyone who stood up for the whales! This is a huge victory. jack

hedley 1,900 Report post Posted April 13, 2014 Japanese Whaling Fleet returning to the Southern Ocean in 2015 Today, I read an article about the Institute of Cetacean Research filing court briefs that indicate they will be defying the International Court of Justice's court ruling. They plan on making a new "Research" whaling program and returning for the 2015-2016 season. They also plan on getting a permanent injunction against Sea Shepherd USA and other Sea Shepherd Entities. This is an absurd step taken by ICR considering that the International Court of Justice ruled that their whaling program is not for research and shouldn't continue. Now, they plan on seeking permanent injunction against Sea Shepherd USA and other Sea Shepherd entities in the U.S. District Court! I don't think they understand the fact that their whaling programs are illegal and if they approach a U.S. Court about seeking a permanent injunction against any (non USA) Sea Shepherd entity it will result in failure! The United States Courts do not have power over another countries organization nor another countries vessels. The ICR (I highly believe) will gain nothing from this court conference. If the ICR whale poachers do return in 2015, I am sure Sea Shepherd Global/Sea Shepherd Australia will also return but even stronger! -Matt
