The Boxing Day races at Ellerslie racecourse are famous for their glitz and glamour and this year was no different.

More than 15,000 race-goers turned their backs on the Boxing Day sales today to watch premier thoroughbred racing and enjoy the race day atmosphere.

DESCENT Into Q U E E N S T O W N

This is an interesting head camera video from a pilot flying a new
instrument approach into Queenstown, New Zealand. A straight-in approach
like this without the nearby mountains is not unusual, especially in the
tough weather of Europe; but a double-curved one like this with nearby
terrain used to be something countries would not even publish, let alone
authorize. The key here is development of GPS technologies.
This flick has gone viral among my aviators. It's worth viewing.

You must have total faith in your instruments and yourself to properly fly
this approach.

CAMPBELL~Live: MonFEB~3rd_14

Last December, Campbell Live reporter Lachlan Forsyth travelled with three juvenile Karearea, or New Zealand Falcon, as they were transferred to a wooden crate on the roof of Rotorua Museum.

It was the start of an ambitious project – the first urban release of a threatened species in New Zealand.

Just a few weeks ago the Karearea, named Hatupatu, Tama and Maureen, were just learning how to fly.

"They're teenagers now, [and] they're racing around," says Debbie Stewart of Wingspan Bird of Prey Trust. "They're manoeuvring around obstacles, going around buildings, and still learning how to be falcons but still pretty much under control now."

Karearea are fast, agile and playful birds – pure predators.

It's been just six weeks since three awkward balls of fluff were transferred from Wingspan Bird of Prey Trust to Rotorua Museum.

For the time being though the three birds are still learning to hunt, so food is provided daily by volunteers.

I have an interest in these birds and its amazing how many folk think these are the same hawks that eat road kill.

Many dont realize that this is the bird on the $20 note.

Its name can be difficult to pronounce and because of this it lacks a mainstream identity.

They are predators in  the same league as the Iconic Peregrine Falcon.

I personally know people who shoot them because they kill their race Pigeons.

What chance do they have??
