About Wild About New Zealand

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A six-part series Wild About New Zealand" takes in all the beauty and idiosyncrasies of six of New Zealand's stunning and unique National Parks, and also profiles Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, our unofficial National Park of the sea. The series showcases this country's dramatic topography, unique species, spectacular stories and the cast of thousands that fight every day to maintain and preserve the rich history and future of our national parks.

Executive Producer John Hyde describes the series as "an epic reminder of why we live in one of the most beautiful countries on earth".

"The location of the content, combined with stylistically spectacular cinematography, and great characters enhance the story of our dramatic little country."

Writer, adventure guide and environmental specialist, Gus Roxburgh hosts the show and he does whatever it takes to bring the audience closer to the 'heart' of each park: descending deep into the limestone caves of Kahurangi; canoeing the haunting Whanganui River; abseiling the massive Bowen Falls in Fiordland; skiing the Tasman Glacier; looping the summit of Mt Aoraki in a glider flown by world renowned pilot Gavin Wills and hanging out with a predator from an age before dinosaurs evolved.

Wild About New Zealand", conceived by tourism marketing expert Chris Adams from Miles Media, radio host Jim Mora and ex-journo and ex-Maori Television executive Joanna Paul, was triggered by the 125th anniversary of New Zealand's first national park, Tongariro and marks the 25th anniversary of NHNZ's first series on New Zealand's national parks; Journeys in National Parks.

Conservation Minister Nick Smith has rejected three requests put to him in Parliament to resign, stand down as minister or be sacked.

The Opposition says he's been using his influence to pressure the Department of Conservation over the proposed Ruataniwha Dam and water management changes.

He's only been back as minister for eight months after resigning for inappropriately flexing ministerial influence, and faces that accusation again.

Conservation Minister Nick Smith was told about Department of Conservation plans to submit against the Ruataniwha irrigation proposal the day before the plans were scrapped.

A 32-page draft submission calling the Tukituki catchment proposal "risky", "untested" and "inappropriate" was flagged to the minister at his weekly meeting with officials on July 29.

Yesterday Mr Smith told reporters "there was no mention to me of a draft submission".

"I did not know of the existence of a draft submission."

But a report from the meeting released to 3 News shows Mr Smith was given a short briefing about the direction of the submission including the "potential effect of the proposed nutrient limits and targets on the freshwater values in the Tukituki catchment".

After the briefing, Mr Smith raised concerns and requested more information, which according to an email trail, appears to have prompted senior managers to express concern also.

The next day the 32-page submission was scrapped and replaced by a two-paragraph submission approved by the minister.

Opposition parties are calling for Mr Smith to resign over the matter.

Appearing on Firstline this morning, Dr Norman said the sequence of events points to Dr Smith having leaned on the department to change its submission.

"The evidence is that after Nick Smith met with the department to discuss their submission, suddenly an email got sent around saying the minister has concerns, and that he thinks that he's querying whether in fact they shouldn't just ditch it and leave it to the EPA.

"So clearly he expressed views about what he thought should happen, and then hey presto, that's exactly what happened. The submission got dropped, and instead DOC just put in two paragraphs instead of making a proper submission about the whole thing."

Dr Norman also says it's not credible that DOC would so dramatically cut its submission without outside influence.

"[DOC says its] job is to look after the conservation value, so the fish, right, but not the water. Well, what do fish live in? Fish live in water, so if you fill the water with toxic pollution that's so toxic that it kills fish, surely that should be of interest to the Department of Conservation.

"But they go, 'Oh no, we're not interested in the water, not our job, no no, not water – we're interested in fish.' Well actually, New Zealand's native fish need to live in water, and this project will completely contaminate their water and kill the fish.

"That's what the original submission that was suppressed said, and that got replaced with this two-paragraph submission because they don't want the truth – the basic science about it – to get out."

Next month, texan oil giant Anadarko begins the process of drilling deep sea exploration wells off the Taranaki and Otago coasts. In December, they'll go exploring off Kaikoura.

That's the same Anadarko that owned a 25 percent stake in the well that so disastrously exploded in 2010, spilling 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

Kaikoura is a very safe National seat.

It certainly can't be possible that no-one in the community supports the exploration.

So we thought we'd go back to Kaikoura to ask them.

We sent Whena Owen and cameraman Cam Williams with a special brief - spend two hours in the main street and ask everyone you meet what their opinion is.
