A one-eyed cat named Diesel has been greeting them from his bed at the entrance to Countdown – much to the delight of customers. The smoky-grey 11-year-old cat belongs to Geoff Hayes, who lives just around the corner from the supermarket. "He's very playful, cuddly – just like a normal cat really," says Mr Hayes. "[He] loves his food." The cat has been wondering down to the supermarket every day for the last six months, where he sits outside on his special bed. Mr Hayes has made numerous attempts to take Diesel home, but the cat keeps returning. "I'd try to entice him with food and lock him in, but it didn't work. As soon as I'd let him out he'd come straight back," says Mr Hayes. Diesel lost his eye as a kitten after it became infected with glaucoma – the vet removed the eye before it spread and he went blind in the other. That's not the only trouble he's got himself into – Diesel also lost one of his lives on the road. "He's also been hit by a car – he's got like a thousand-dollar hip on him, so he's a well-loved cat," says Mr Hayes. Countdown staff have given the cat his own bed and food bowl outside the entrance, where customers can pat Diesel as they come and go. "They love to pat him and he's really receptive to that," says Countdown Rototuna manager Garry Whiteman. "They feed him as well, so it works out well for the cat I think." Diesel has also become a star online with his own Facebook pay, which has more than 1600 likes. "He's here at 4 o'clock in the morning to greet the staff that start early and the cleaners that are leaving at that time will give him some treats as well," says Mr Whiteman. Certainly that's the case on Henry Bennett's farm for lambs abandoned by their mothers - he is using perfume to save the lives of orphan lambs. Mr Bennett says ewes identify their offspring by smell, so by masking a sheep's own scent with perfumes orphan lambs are more easily adopted by prospective parents.
