In August Campbell Live ran a story on Ranfurly rest home for veterans. Back then the new management was proposing a pay cut for staff.

That issue has since been resolved, but a new one has arisen.

Families of some of the residents and veterans at Ranfurly are concerned at what they say are cuts to the outings and activities for their loved ones. They also blame the change in management and a change in the 100-year-old culture of honouring and respecting the men and women Ranfurly was set up for.

Rebecca Wright has the story of the World War veterans who fought for our country.

HERE IS A FEEL GOOD STORY, ENJOY!

This is the kind of story you need when it seems like the world is spiraling out of control…..

Not many people get a picture of this proud bird snuggled up next to them!

Freedom and Jeff
Freedom and I have been together 11 years this summer.
She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings.
Her left wing doesn't open all the way even after surgery,
it was broken in 4 places.
She's my baby.

When Freedom came in she could not stand
and both wings were broken. She was
emaciated and covered in lice. We made the
decision to give her a chance at life, so I took
her to the vet's office. From then
on, I was always around her. We had her in a
huge dog carrier with the top off, and it
was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to
lay in. I used to sit and talk to her,
urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay
there looking at me with those big brown eyes.
We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still
couldn't stand. It got to the point where the
decision was made to euthanaze her
if she couldn't stand in a week. You know you don't
want to cross that line between torture and
rehab, and it looked like death was
winning. She was going to be put
down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in
on that Thursday afternoon. I didn't want to go
to the center that Thursday, because I couldn't
bear the thought of her being euthanazed;
but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone
was grinning from ear to ear. I went
immediately back to her cage; and there she was,
standing on her own, a big beautiful
eagle. She was ready to live. I was
just about in tears by then. That
was a very good day.

We knew she could never fly, so the director
asked me to glove train her.
I got her used to the glove,
and then to jesses, and we started
doing education programs for schools
in western Washington .
We wound up in the newspapers,
radio (believe it or not) and some
TV. Miracle Pets even did a show
about us.

In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I had stage 3,
which is not good (one major organ plus
everywhere), so I wound up doing 8 months of
chemo. Lost the hair - the whole
bit. I missed a lot of work. When I
felt good enough, I would go to Sarvey
and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would
also come to me in my dreams and help me fight
the cancer. This happened time and time again.

Fast forward to November 2000

the day after Thanksgiving,
I went in for my last checkup.
I was told that if the cancer was not
all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last
option was a stem cell transplant.  Anyway, they
did the tests; and I had to come back Monday for
the results. I went in Monday, and I was
told that all the cancer was gone.

So the first thing I did was get up to Sarvey and
take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty
and cold. I went to her flight and jessed her
up, and we went out front to the top of the
hill. I hadn't said a word to
Freedom, but somehow she knew. She looked at me
and wrapped both
her wings around me to where I
could feel them pressing in on my back
(I was engulfed in eagle wings), and she
touched my nose with her beak and stared into my
eyes, and we just stood there like that
for I don't know how long . That was a
magic moment. We have been soul mates ever
since she came in. This is a very special bird.

On a side note: I have had people who
were sick come up to us when we are out, and
Freedom has some kind of hold on
them. I once had a guy who was
terminal come up to us and
I let him hold her.
His knees just about buckled and he
swore he could feel her power course through his
body. I have so many stories like that..

I never forget the honor I have of being so close
to such a magnificent spirit as
Freedom.

Hope you enjoyed this!

A SMALL REQUEST...

93% won't forward, but I'm Sure You Will.

A small request.....Just one line

All you are asked to do is keep this circulating.
Even if it's only to one more person.
In memory of anyone you know who has been
struck down by cancer or is still living with it

Or just someone who enjoys a GREAT STORY

Families of some of the residents and veterans at Ranfurly came to Campbell Live because they were concerned about cuts to outings and activities for their loved ones.

They say cuts have been made since Retirement Assets Ltd and its director, Graham Wilkinson, took over management of the rest home last year.

Today we learned the Ranfurly War Veterans Trust has commissioned an independent expert to conduct a review and assessment of the current management of the rest home.

And four more families contacted us overnight with their concerns.

This week, Campbell Live has been looking at the lifestyle of the residents at the Ranfurly Rest Home in Auckland.

We've been looking at the reduction in activities and the outings the residents are offered.

One of their favourites is a trip to the local fish and chip restaurant called the Thirsty Whale.

A programme set up to give retired greyhounds a second chance at life is an initiative with a difference - it also has the effect of giving the dog's trainer a second chance at life.

The dogs' trainers or handlers are prisoners and every day they work with the dogs to get them ready for domestic life with a family.

The charity is called Greyhounds Behind Bars and reporter Whena Owen, went behind bars at Rangipo Prison to meet the dogs and the prisoners.

Running 160km in Jandals

For most people, running a marathon - that's 42.2km - is an unimaginable feat of pain and suffering.

So imagine what it must be like to run 160km.

It's called an ultra-marathon, and last weekend a 48-year-old south Auckland man completed his first ever ultra - and he did it in a pair of jandals.

BUDDY..the talking Starling :o

Debbie Bingham nearly left Buddy the bird for dead when she found him on a farm track, near Waimate.

With no sign of life she thought she'd take the dead fledgling into the kindy she worked at to show the children.

But then cradled in Ms Bingham's hand, Buddy's beak opened - he was alive, and against the odds. Now, with a whole lot of love, the little bird is three years old, and is something of a talking point in Timaru.

That's because just like a kindy kid, Buddy the starling is learning new songs, and new words.

As you're absolutely aware if you live in Canterbury, it's Cup Week - the main event on the New Zealand trotting calendar and a chance for Harness Racing New Zealand and the fashion-conscious to strut their stuff.

But there's another less well-known event on the race calendar this week, and that's the New Zealand Cup for little horses, or if you prefer, ponies.

They call it the Kidz Kartz Cup and John Sellwood caught up with some of those vying for the title ahead of tomorrow's big race at Addington.

It's well known there are different horses for different courses.

Thoroughbreds are bred to gallop, and standardbreds are to trot or pace.

Pixie was a pacer - but not a very good one. Two years ago she wouldn’t even step over a pole on the ground.

And while the future can be bleak for dud pacers, Pixie's career has taken off, thanks to a girl called Georgia Calder.

It is Georgia's dream to take Pixie the pacer to the country's top equine event - the Horse of the Year in Hastings.

She's launched a Facebook page and is seeking sponsorship.

In August and October, Campbell Live brought viewers three stories about Auckland's Ranfurly rest home.

It has a stunning reputation and a history of caring for war veterans.

The home was so admired that when they opened a new building recently, the Prime Minister attended and an Air Force Orion flew overhead.

But Campbell Live spoke to staff and to the family members of residents, who told a different story - a story of cuts to outings and activities, of staff leaving and proposed paycuts, which were dropped after Campbell Live's first story.

Their director, Graeme Wilkinson, promised things were fine.

But last week a member of the public contacted Campbell Live to describe an accident outside Ranfurly, which another member of the public had filmed.

It involved a Ranfurly resident and what seems to have been a staggeringly slow response from staff.

Mr Wilkinson spoke to John Campbell to explain the accusations.

The Ross Sisters were a trio of female sibling singing dancers consisting of Aggie Ross, Elmira Ross, and Maggie Ross, (whose real names were Veda Victoria, Dixie Jewel and Betsy Ann Ross). The Ross Sisters performed as a 3-part harmony trio, in which they also danced and did acrobatics and contortionism. Their public attention peaked during the 1940s, during which they were featured prominently in the film Broadway Rhythm. A shortened version of this same clip also appears in the compilation film "That's Entertainment! III" (1994).

Two weeks ago a woman helped a stranger in need.

Vee Rutledge called 111 and was put through to St John Ambulance.

She needed assistance with an elderly man who had fallen from his mobility scooter while returning to Ranfurly rest home in Auckland.

That should have been the end of the matter - except it wasn't.

Somehow the private details she gave to the emergency service were passed on to a third party and that left her feeling very uncomfortable.
