My criticism, and indeed most people's on here is not actually about Trev's skill as a race caller. Most of us agree he does the trots well so he obvioulsy has some ability.

Our problem is that he concentrates so much on his tips that he can't call the race properly. I'm 5000% sure that if Trev gave up the tipping and just called the race as it pans out, he'd be pretty good.

No matter what age you are you should always be looking to improve your performance in your job. Trev needs to give away the tipping and do his job. Which is race calling.

Peter Earley just tipped the first four in order but he didn't even mention it in his summary. If it was Trev it would have been the first and only thing he would have mentioned.

Well said.  His calling was poor before he got carried away with his tips though.  I understand he visits the casino regularly...horrible places.  He'd be better off sticking to the better odds that dogs offer.  I think many of our greyhound callers could call gallops if they got the opportunity(Tom Wood already does).  I agree with what people say about setting up a commentary training school-I understand there's a lack of opportunities in NZ but who's to say the ones that excel can't go overseas to commentate.

I agree with Dizzy about you Trevor 'haters'.....on and on about the same thing.

I'm not a dog man but certainly view quite a few during the week while waiting on gallops/trots.

I can understand how trev's tipping annoys some ,I actually enjoy his banter ,cos it shows he has put some study in, his money is on etc

Had to laugh when he said he collected so much off a small quaddie and made a 'profit' so obviously not a big spender....good on him ,he shows passion about his job. It's low to suggest his visits to Casino add to his low popularity !!!

After calling those big cards ,I'd pop in there for an easy meal too !!!

You all love Mark McNamara....the talking machine......in recent weeks I've seen few Cantab races but heard him call three.....yes three.....close finishes wrong. If this was one of the other callers you'd be calling for his head !!!

And all his "in" statements..eg calls one driver the German , a horse called VooDoo wins a few races at Ashburton so he calls a trotter the "VooDoo" of such and such a track. And he calls pretty average performers "Great" horses or trainers,he's as big on exaggeration as Trevor is on his bets.

And the accuracy of a lot of callers on Trackside is very doubtful, horses called in front when they are third and fading fast.....lay off Trevor...he's a local and he's OK.

Race-calling is a lot harder than it looks ,especially with so many maiden races and new badly named runners.

Alot of the second tier Aussie ones on country tracks are shockers.

It's great to see Tom Wood doing so well ....you treated him roughly as well in early times.

How many of you remember Bill Cherry ?????

I'm not a Trevor-hater. I'm a Trevor-advisor.

My advice is this: You are a race-caller. Do your job the best you can.

.....and call the finish correctly ,which he appears to do most of the time !!!!

My advice to you would be to save your advice for the NZ Cricket team ,especially the batsman !!!!

Yes, I'm a Trevor advisor aswell and a stipe advisor.  You say we shouldn't criticise people yet you criticise Mark McNamara who I think is outstanding but that's another topic.  Those who know me on this forum know that I have plenty of compliments to people, infact I don't criticise often, only when I think it's due.  Trevor brings a lot of criticism on himself.  I was criticised a lot at school and rightly so, I deserved it because often I didn't try.  If I put the effort in that I do on punting I would have got straight A's probably.  Commentators get paid very good money and for that they should be very good at what they do.  You probably get paid decent money because of what you do.  Tom Wood had age on his side so was likely to improve, Trev won't and there should should have been someone new years ago...in my opinion.   I knew from previous posts they're not lining up to take over.

Shock horror!! Isn't that a legal past time? Low blow.........

It's legal, I don't think they're healthy places in society.  I'm a punter, I don't think the odds are in your favour, that's all.  Your best bet is to stick to gambling forms you can use your skill in(Trots-too many variables hence how many roughies win, Gallops-still a lot of variables especially in winter months, Sports-better still but many variables and inconsistencies involving team attitudes week to week, Greyhounds-my favourite as there are less variables and the odds are stacked in your favour.  If you put the work in you can get the chocolates).  Which reminds me, why do you punt on greyhounds?(if you do)

A few questions for those Trevor defenders-

Do you think it's alright for a commentator to say mid race that "We are in big trouble" and not spit out the winning dogs name till after the race had finished? Do you think this is fair on owners and punters? If I owned the dog and had that on the tape to show friends / family, I would feel embarrassed to have that muppet on the audio, especially if it was the only time the dog had won.

Do you think it's alright for Trevor to COMPULSIVELY go on and on about his quaddie, place 6 and best bet of the day that won or lost paying $1.50?

Do you think Trevor's COMPULSIVE 'gambling' effects his commentating skills? ( or lack of )

Do you think it's fair on owners when Trevor Wilkes best bet of the day loses or if a dog knocks him out of the quaddie that he gets personal and nasty on the dog that beat him? Some of the things I've heard him say about dogs that have cost him have made me sick.

How many people do you think actually listen to Trevor's tips? Because the way he goes on about it makes me sick listening to him. Anyone would think he actually had a good tipping record LOL.

I agree Trevor doesn't do a bad job on the trots, but at the moment he is doing a terrible job and struggles to name more than 4 dogs in most races. For the quality of dog down south, Addington deserves better.

Focus on doing your job mate, commentate the dogs as the race happens, with no thoughts about what selections you have and without letting your gambling get in the way of doing your job, because sometimes I feel sorry for you after you have a loss. Getting personal and angry at dogs tht cost you is a sure fire sign you have a problem Trev. Sort your shit.

Compelling argument.  Daryl Robinson who has just started full time(I understand he did a bit of calling back in the day) is far better than Trev already.  He is a reasonably fluent caller, reasonably accurate tipster, doesn't go on and on about his tips or get annoyed.  He had the daunting task of taking Brian's spot which wouldn't make anyone look overly good but I think he's doing a good job.  Tom Wood is doing well(at his age he's incredible).  Dave McDonald does remarkably well especially having to endure a commentary box off the finish line.  Peter Earley still sounds a bit bored(he's been around since the ark) but is very accurate and at times funny and entertaining.  For those of you that think I'm critical, I'm not.  Just want the job done correctly(or close to).

:D :D

Not a bad analogy that. Neither of them are doing their job to the best of their abilities because of distractions.

Trev's preoccupation with tipping make him look like an idiot

Our batsmen's preoccupation with 20-20 make them look like idiots.

I think a few of you are dreaming. The problem with all dog callers is that they want to call the whole field in just a few seconds, when maybe they should just concentrate on the first few runners, where the majority of races are won.

Brian Martin was ok, but lets face it, Trevs stiil here and his race calling cv will look a lot better than BM.

I think he does as good a job as all nz dog callers, none are special, and really its a sport where you really need to watch.

Trev has always been used as a back up caller for the trots as well, I think he even called the odd gallop meeting as well. How many nz dog callers has done that???

Keep up ya quad picks Trev, I wont be listening but somebody will.

Dave McDonald commentates gallops, harness and greyhounds as does Tom Wood.  They do it permanently.  The late Sharkie Clark called the grehounds as well as doing gallops trials.

Fair Enough, you are right.

I am not really sticking up for Trev really, I am just surprised that he constantly gets the negative feedback.

I have to admit, I dont follow the dogs, but i do have a punt between gallops, trots etc on them. I very seldom have a bet that I cant watch anymore.

At least you doggie lovers have something to say.....We have a huge weekend at the jewels coming up...And no banter on the Harness site??  MMmm what happened.

Like I said I dish out plenty of compliments.  I believe quite a few people that stick up for Trev haven't heard him...much.  Try to tune in on a Thursday and Friday and just count the errors.  I punt every Thursday and Friday and believe I know him as well as any punter.  It's our money that goes into the industry so we deserve someone better.  Once when I was on course(at a greyhound track) I got into a conversation with some trainers about the countries' commentators and not one had a kind word to say about Trev.  It's not a small group of us who disapprove, many people are scared to speak up.  I've written to the club who told me the NZ Racing Board employs the commentators so I wrote to them.  Didn't get a reply so they are obviously happy with him for now.

His comments make no sense.  Today he has Ciri Rioli as his bet of the day and says, 'It had never jumped in its life until last week when it blitzed them'.  Even though it  has led in half his starts how can you have a bet of the day and back it up with a statement like that?  Everyone knows you have to jump well to have a chance in a sprint(9 times out of 10 anyway).  He mucked up the call too-was he watching his bet of the day and getting distracted?  You decide.

Homebush chopper, fair enough that he was a pretty good chance, but talk about some other dogs that could give it a run for its money.

how many dogs in the total 30 seconds did he call. 4 I think?

kin nikki, missed the kick ran last he reckons. Jumped on turns, ran wide at the start, and I just checked results to see where it actually finished, and beat 2 dogs home.

Please, can u attemp to call the race as you see it, and if you didnt, dont make up some crazy story.

Was listening to that on the radio on way home, and yeh he called Ciri Rioli second, I backed Not a Know which was up there, and he left it out of his finish call all together. Because as you state Dusty he must have been looking for Ciri Rioli who didnt pay a divvie.

Also in Race 3 he called Dynamic Black 4th for first 4 punters, I believe it was a good length off 4th in sixth place, and i'm sick of him using the 4 colours look like 6 colours rubbish excuse, Sort it out Trev.

And as for your tipping please give it up, and stop saying WE, it's you !!!

Just concentrate on your racecalling, it is so obvious your gambling is interferring with your job.

I don't understand why his employers don't have a word at performance review time.

Plain and simple the man is past it, after listening to the Laurels he has to go, no disrespect but that race call is the worst ever especially for a listed race, quote! yes it's an even break now who's in front oh yes um it's clearly in front um it's opened them up....... That was beyond a joke. The solution is replace him as soon as. Cheers

Yeah, he asks 'Who is it' quite often like he wants someone to tell him who the dog is.  Maybe the judge and him can swap places?  Last night he was going on about Trackside Dining next week which in a way was good advertising but he started his spiel a few seconds before the last race and ended up missing the start of the race.  Is this good enough?

..here'n'There (as i don't follow the Greys)..i win a relative "plenty" off simply opposing Trev's opinion

very little study needed [excepting the initial 'case~study' Of Trev]...just Listen'n'Punt :)
