Race 5 â€“ LORT SMITH ANIMAL HOSPITAL HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

Trainer Mr R Smerdon was fined $200 for failing to notify the removal of glue on shoes from Verdant (GB) today in accordance with the rules.

Lidari (FR) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

Eraset raced three wide without cover from the 1000m.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Lidari (FR) was held up before shifting in to avoid the heels of Callanish (NZ) nearing the 200m and in doing so bumped heavily with Verdant (GB) on several occasions resulting in both of those horses getting unbalanced.  V Duric (Lidari (FR)) explained that he was left with no other option but to let his mount stride up inside Callanish (NZ) as the gelding had pulled quite hard during the run and he couldn’t physically restrain the horse any longer.  Stewards accepted this explanation and therefore no action was taken.

J Noonan, rider of Sharalam (IRE), advised that in his view the gelding raced dour and  is looking for more ground.  A post race veterinary examination of Sharalam (IRE) revealed no abnormalities.

A post race veterinary examination of Callanish (NZ) revealed the gelding had sustained a significant laceration to its off hind leg and trainer Mr M Price was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness is required prior to Callanish (NZ) racing again.

A post race veterinary examination of Laristan (FR) revealed the gelding to have cardiac arrhythmia and trainer Mr D Hayes was advised that the gelding must undergo an Ecg and gain a veterinary certificate of fitness, the results of which should include oscultation performed after a 1000m gallop.

Mr D O’Sullivan, trainer of British General which performed below expectations, advised the gelding would now be spelled.

Trainer Mr R Smerdon was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Verdant (GB) today and he explained that his main concern was to make sure the gelding began well out of the barriers as it had a history of failing to do so however was not specific as to where the gelding ought settle other than to make sure it jumped.
