Black Caviar to be inducted into Ozzie Racing Hall of Fame

Recommended Posts

AUSTRALIA'S greatest ever sprinter, Black Caviar, later this week will be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame while still racing - a feat even the great Makybe Diva could not achieve.
The New Zealand-bred dual Cox Plate winner Sunline is the only other horse to enter the hall of fame while still competing in races. Sunline's induction caused a good deal of controversy in 2002 but it's unlikely that Black Caviar's induction on Thursday will create much backlash.
Sunline was the the world's highest earning race mare of her time; she competed on 48 occasions for 32 wins, nine seconds and three thirds to earn $11,351,607.

Now Black Caviar could be set for the biggest challenge of her career in next month's Newmarket Handicap after she set a 1000-metre record at Flemington on Saturday.

The unbeaten superstar erased any doubts about her fitness and zest for racing by running 55.42 seconds in the Lightning to break a 25-year-old track record. It fulfilled one of the last achievements missing from Black Caviar's resume.
"That win opened up a lot more opportunities for her," managing part-owner Neil Werrett said. "She is back bigger and stronger and maybe even better than she was before. It's incredible really.
"We have clubs from around the world chasing her to come and race at their tracks; about the only one we haven't heard from is the ATC (the Australian Turf Club in Sydney)."
There are limited options for Black Caviar next start but the Newmarket at Flemington on March 9 and the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley 13 days later are under consideration.
"The realistic next option is the William Reid,'' trainer Peter Moody said on Melbourne radio on Sunday. ''But I'm mindful the Newmarket is a great race on her favourite track. No doubt she appreciates racing in a straight line.''
Black Caviar would scare off rivals in whatever race she runs in as she searches for a 14th group 1 victory to equal the Australian record of Kingston Town.
The William Reid has the advantage of being at weight-for-age. The Newmarket, being a handicap, means Black Caviar would have to give rivals weight.
Racing Victoria handicapper Neil Jennings indicated she'd probably be given 61.5 kilograms when weights are released on Tuesday, which might tempt her owners.
Part-owner David Taylor said Moody would have the final say on the program, but the premier sprint had some attraction.
"If he says to us, 'What's your preference?' To win a second Newmarket would be something else,'' he said.
Black Caviar set a weight-carrying record for a mare and ran a race record when she won the Newmarket with 58 kilograms two years ago. She has won 10 group 1 races since, so to go up only 3.5 kilograms would appear a lenient impost.
Four horses have won two Newmarkets - Razor Sharp, Correct, Gothic and Aspen - all in consecutive years. Another consideration in the Newmarket mix would be that Lightning runner-up Moment Of Change, also trained by Moody, is likely to start favourite if Black Caviar doesn't run.
He would get 53.5 kilograms or 54.5, which would mean a nine to 10-kilogram weight turnaround from his 2½-length defeat on Saturday. "He's my second-best horse,'' Moody said.

Couple of things here.

61.5kg seems a bit lenient for a horse who's won 20 odd on the trot and never been beaten.

Poor old Spiro must be thinking "What's that all about".

And what does Peter Moody think if it's another of his horses that spoils his great mares unbeaten record?
