While looking at some race records I came across a Mare that impressed me.

these are 4 of her last 5 starts for earnings of almost 400k

Over a 35 day period from 26-12-87 to 30-1-88 she won a Gp 3 2400m

then 2nd Gp1 3200m 1 1/2 Lens 3:15.66

then 1st Gp 1 2400m

then 1st Gp 1 3200m 3:15.59

All Good tracks.

This must be a horse to aspire to.

Her last two Group races were 7 days apart.

Paid 16 when winning queen Elizabeth on boxing day, then hit the lead to early top of the straight in cup and had Chris Johnson stalking her on sea swift. I think she broke down at paeroa. Very nice horse

Yes, as tough as they come. Interestingly enough, DARIA FUN is the 3rd dam of one of the FORTUNA Syndicated horses, the 4yo gelding. JETSET MAN (Golan X Jetset Doll). He is a big, strong, staying type who has tasted success for us here in NZ but is now on his way to Singapore to race for us with the 2013 Singapore Derby a major target for him.

DARIAS FUN by the way had five of her foals go to the races, all winners, including the NZ Cup and Mitchelson Cup winner, WALTERMITTY (by Grosvenor) and the very handy BAKUP (by Kiliminjaro).

Incidentally, the 3.15.59 she ran in the 1988 Wellington Cup set an Australasian record for the distance, which may well still stand today. Someone else may know the answer to that.

Neat horse that Daria's Fun. Not many Group 1 winners have hailed from a small farm in the Bombay Hills :D

I know Sue Ellis is still working with horses in Oz these days, including relatives to the great mare, but does anybody know the whereabouts of Lionel?

Quote from website. from Google Image search of Daria's fun

Ms Ellis still has hopes of again putting a horse in the starting gates on the first Tuesday in November.

She inherited Daria’s Fun’s daughter Daria's Debut and has bred her progeny ever since, including great-grandson Kate Loves Jack and great-grandaughter Belle's Gold.

“They are both winners, but neither of them has gone anywhere near what Daria’s Fun showed,â€

How wonderful to read about our amazing mare Daria’s Fun. We still breed from the family having retained her daughter, and grand daughters. Since we’ve have Sword in Stone and Secret Spirit being the most prominent performer so far. Her 3.15.59 record still stands in Australasia for 3200m - what an experience to have had her.

Remember writing her down after seeing her at Avondale night meeting. From memory came from about 20 lengths off pace to run 2nd in  a maiden race.   Had to be special.   Sue Ellis was John Walker's sister in law ?
