No new historic claims

"There is another important consideration in this whole argument - which no-one else appears to have raised. In 2006, Prime Minister Helen Clark signed into law an end-date for historic Treaty claims. Clause 6AA of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 limits the jurisdiction of the Waitangi Tribunal to deal with historic claims submitted after 1 September 2008: “after 1 September 2008 no Maori may submit a claim to the Tribunal that is, or includes, a historical Treaty claimâ€

"Who would have believed it? Singing a song can make a river yours. Plus give you a chunk of a power company and a say over how that company's run.

Well, that's what the Waitangi Tribunal says.

It's not quite enough to just sing a song. You should also know the river's taniwha and use the river to wash away spells and curses. But the clincher is to recognise the river's life force. Then it's yours."

Press Release: New Zealand First Party

Rt Hon Winston Peters

New Zealand First Leader

04 September 2012

New Zealanders Encouraged to Challenge Racist Policies

New Zealand First says if cynical backroom deals between the National and Maori parties leads to preferential treatment for Maori over water rights then all New Zealanders should claim to be Maori.

Rt Hon Winston Peters says such a move would force the Government to declare exactly who it considers to be Maori enough to get special deals on assets already owned by all New Zealanders.

“John Key could write to those New Zealanders he considers ineligible to let them know they’ve missed out.

“That way the racial divide being created in this country by Mr Key over his ill-informed asset sales programme would be clearly marked for all to see.

“It is the only honest thing to do if National intends to lead New Zealand down a path littered with racially segregated policies formulated behind closed doors with the Maori Party,â€

A landmark Waitangi Tribunal report on water rights has potentially opened the floodgates to more claims.

Hawke's Bay tribe Ngati Kahungunu has announced it is lodging a statement of claim in the Waitangi Tribunal relating to the country's second largest aquifer.

The significance of their claim is that it is unrelated to the sale of State owned power companies and appears to be in response to the tribunal's suggestion that Maori have a residual property right in water.

Prime Minister John Key yesterday announced a delay in the sale of State-owned power company Mighty River Power after the tribunal urged a delay while water rights within Mighty River Power's catchment were discussed with iwi.

Ngati Kahungunu spokesman Ngami Tomoana said in a statement last night the iwi was aware that most of its hapu claims had not been settled yet "and see this as an opportunity to bring definition to the merits of those claims, before any rights are sold off."

"Ngati Kahungunu has taken a direct approach to protecting their whanau, hapu and marae interests in freshwater. Today they instructed their lawyers Chen Palmer to file a statement of claim in the Waitangi Tribunal.

"Ngati Kahungunu has the second largest aquifer in New Zealand and it is paramount that this treasured resource is protected," Mr Tomoana said.

"Ngati Kahungunu looks forward to engaging constructively with the Government during upcoming consultation."

The iwi has 22,000 registered members and its rohe, or territory, stretches from Mahia, Hawke's Bay, to Wairarapa.

why would violence be inevitable? there are a few radical Maori and those who have been brainwashed into thinking they are entitled to anything that moves/breathes etc but in the main the Maori engineering the current crap are young, educated people feeding on the Treaty trough. These people have never known anything other than the grievance industry ( how sad is that) and probably aren't motivated to anything 'physical'. If the rest of the country just roll over and 'take it up..' then we get what we deserve.

Come on mate - if there was a protest that was perceived as anti-Maori, can you really see it NOT turning bad?

Agree, they (Hone, Mana and sov movement) will rally for the scrap with the colonisers.

Bishop Tamaki's mob can have a rally (wearing black btw) calling "enough is enough", so should the rest of the country.
