kmhood 1 Report post Posted January 24, 2012 I'm reading a book published in 1818 by John Lawrence called British Field Sports. On reading the section about racing have come across this:- The Writer talks of Race Horses being bred from small sized Stallions, in order to produce early maturity, and for the sake of training two year olds: small sized Colts coming sooner into use, as bearing to be trained earlier than the large.____ It goes on to discuss the other end of the scale and various other opinions. Just thought it might amuse a few breeders. This book is being re-published even in 2012 as reprints when needed. Must have been hugely popular over the years. Google it - has a range of topics on game and fishing, racing etc. The copy I am reading is an original version.
kmhood 1 Report post Posted January 24, 2012 I meant to say that even that far back they were trying to breed 2 year old runners.

You may be surprised to know that there was a time when yearlings were raced in England !
