Additional Riccarton Meeting – 16 June

The Canterbury Jockey Club will conduct a six-race programme on the turf course proper at Riccarton Park Racecourse on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Approved by the TAB dates committee.

Together with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing the CJC is looking to provide opportunities for horses which were unable to race after the abandonment of seven races at Phar Lap Raceway on Sunday, and for which there may not be opportunities at Oamaru Racecourse on Sunday 14 June or Riccarton Park Racecourse on Saturday 20 June 2026.

Favourable weather conditions have made holding this meeting on the turf an option rather than on the Polytrack which would have been probable under usual winter weather conditions.

Being held on the Tuesday enables the CJC to undertake any required remedial work to have Riccarton Park Racecourse ready to hold the Feature meeting on Saturday 20 June 2026.

The programme is as follows:

  • Rating 60 1600 metres      $17,000
  • Rating 60 1200 metres      $17,000
  • Maiden 1600 metres      $17,000
  • Maiden 1400 metres      $17,000
  • Maiden 1200 metres      $17,000
  • Maiden 1000 metres      $17,000

Nominations will close at 12 noon on Thursday 11 June 2026.

Withdrawals will close at 10 am on Friday 12 June 2026.

Declaration of Riders will close at 1 pm on Friday 12 June 2026.

For further information please contact Canterbury Jockey Club Chief Executive Tim Mills 027 430 0208

Will probably split some.

I think it is organised so they don't have to split any. The only non maiden races are a couple of rating 60s. If they had run 65s they would almost certainly have had to split some.

I can be quite negative about NZTR and their programming, particularly in the South. But well done to them, Oamaru (taking on the two open handicaps from Timaru), and the CJC for their effort in doing a pretty decent job of making up for the meeting that was abandoned.

They haven't done a perfect job; one maiden was lost at Timaru and has been replaced by four, while three R65s (which are chronically oversubscribed in the South) are replaced with two R60s, and the R75 stayers race has disappeared (though there are two R65s and a R75 at the same distances at Oamaru). Maybe they've rung around trainers or looked at their data on the horse-in-training population and found that there’s demand for three extra maidens and that the Oamaru fields were looking like being small enough to be capable of handling the extra horses from Timaru, in which case it's A+ programming. Otherwise a like-for-like seven race meeting with the same seven races that were lost at Timaru would've made more sense.

But losing seven races and replacing them with eight that don't quite match is a damn sight better than losing seven races and replacing them with nothing.

Oamaru fields not looking like being all that small.

Oamaru fields not looking like being all that small.

Didn't think they would be. That said, they've done alright.

The R75 2200m is seven of the 13 horses from Timaru plus four others.

The R65 1600m is eight of the 14 rated >60 from Timaru, plus 11 others rated >60, plus seven of the 13 from Timaru rated <61, plus 12 others rated <61. So 19 for the R65 at Oamaru and 19 for the R60 at the new Riccarton meeting.

The R65 1200m is five of the eight rated >60 from Timaru, plus six others rated >60, plus six of the 12 from Timaru rated <61, plus seven others rated <61. So 11 for the R65 at Oamaru and 13 for the R60 at Riccarton.

The two open handicaps have been moved to Oamaru; the 1600m (is it still the Waimate Cup?) has 9 of the eleven from Timaru and five others while the 1200m has seven of the 10 from Timaru plus one other.

So more than half the horses who missed out have been accommodated between Oamaru and the new meeting, with the only problem being the oversubscribed R65 1600m and soon-to-be oversubscribed R60 1600m at Riccarton. If the 1000m or 1400m maiden at Riccarton were instead another R65-ish 1600m (as it should've been; obviously two full fields of R65 1600s plus a full field of R65s that should've been anticipated for the Oamaru meeting wouldn't all fit into that Oamaru race and one new R60) it'd be perfect.

(One flaw with my numbers; they assume no horses that weren't nommed for either Timaru or Oamaru will nom for the R60s at Riccarton. The more of such horses who do nom for Riccarton, the worse the impact of not having another R60 or R65 1600.)

Racing at same time as All Whites playing, a scheduling stuff up perhaps?

I was planning on breathing this afternoon too. I guess I'll just have to postpone that for another time. It is not possible to schedule everything to avoid anything else one or two souls might be interested in. I don't imagine, other than staff, a Tuesday afternoon at Riccarton involves many people, punters or otherwise.

Why who actually cares???I have not even bothered to pay the money to watch it absolutely no interest...I must say probably about as much interest as watching a normal winter meeting in June

So the All Whites have been scheduled for 6 months or so,  yet the racing guys only a few days ago  decide hey let's schedule a raceday at exactly the same time, interesting, like there is another day tomorrow or even Thursday.

In case you missed it todays races have been programmed due to abandonment of recent meeting at Timaru. Great work by CJC and NZTR to give paying owners a new chance to win a race . As for timing its a case of racing early to beat darkness or do you not know shortest day is this week.

If you cant agree with that then you are stupider than we thought. Clearly trainers think its worth it judging by fields

And the mere fact they scheduled this meeting last week knowing the All Whites were playing might suggest something about the decision makers, as said before there is tomorrow, Thursday, you make everybody out who don't follow your narrative as being stupid, but most have worked you out by now, that why many here don't like you.

No point trying to reason with people like that.

I've actually  just made another  great discovery Monday was free too.

And don't think for a moment I don't like Asians, it's just they don't seem interested in racing or rugby and note how Auckland our biggest population seems to be sliding in both fields.

What are you going on about...you are digging yourself a deeper hole...my advice stop.

What's your point , do your really believe that the All Whites game has robbed the Riccarton meeting of viewers or turnover , your kidding if you do , we have Saturday's pretty much to ourselves and you can see where that is going .

Back on subject. It was actually a fascinating exercise today. A lot of those maidens who started wouldn't have got a start anywhere otherwise. There are no maidens at Riccarton this Saturday, as seems to be the case at many Riccarton meetings, obviously trying to force them onto the AWT. Many of them wouldn't have got a start at Oamaru or Timaru regardless of abandonments.

I notice one maiden race was quinellaed by Southland trainers, another by Otago trainers with a Southland horse providing the trifecta.

This Saturday the four topweights in the open stayers race are all from Southland. Throw in the Wingatui horse and the deep South makes up more than half the field.

Those southern trainers are providing a lot of the "product" when it comes to SI racing. Throw in Timaru as well, which is producing a lot of winners recently, and you see the importance of the bottom half of the island to SI racing.

If better use was made of Oamaru I'm sure it would help to get trainers in the deep south through the long cold winter and help sustain SI racing. Riccarton would certainly be a sad and sorry sight without the southern contribution. I have noticed they don't seem too keen on treking north to race on the AWT.

who don't follow your narrative as being stupid,

I don't need to point out your stupidity to others. You do it on your own by posting nonsense on a regular basis. Your posts on this topic  are just another example.

Such as, 6 o clock news, all about football match, for 10  minutes plus seemed it captured a lot of interest in the nation yet what do ya racing guys do , bang we will run a race meeting at same time, what's worse they only decided last week,  why not tomorrow, or  some other time,  is that smart,  maybe some other time might have been smarter, its 16 years since All Whites played at World Cup,and if you think that was smart then you are the stupid one and should put your name down for a job at NZTR  have it your way if you want.

Was bang on about Senz too, a bunch of cowboys, didn't last long in NZ  with the way they presented their racing especially not hard to see why, yet Entain buy it back for what, what's changed, for racing nothing, I don't care anymore.

Too much negativity will always drown out positivity, too much  negativity for me here with wogs like you, I will sign out, no more correspondence.  Done, finished.

You seem to think racing is dumb .

What about the rugby and league guys , Hurricanes/Blues game on at the same time as the Warriors/Sharks , now that is dumb programming .

I don't know about you always posting positivity , most of your posts were usually bagging the SI programming and what could be done better .

Kettles , pots and black .
