I see the Waikato AWT trials have been cancelled due to lack of interest.

I was just reading earlier about the new Illawarra Grange track that had its first meeting yesterday. An $8m project. Specifically designed to counter wet tracks, but basically a turf track with sand.

You do wonder whether that might be a better option from a racing point of view.

I would love to know the reasons behind there being a lack of horses for the trials .

is it a lack of horses in general , or are trainers and owners becoming more discerning about running their horses on this surface .

Yet to hear a trainer say that the track is tops and would happily race their black type horse on it if the right race and stake was there .

In the NI trainers have the option of grass and AWTs, so while grass tracks are still reasonably firm they will choose to race on the grass.

Poor old Canty trainers. They are now into a 50 day break before the next grass track feature meeting at Riccarton. The only other grass track meeting in Canty during that 50 day break is a low key Timaru meeting after five weeks.

North Islanders had better hope NZTR doesn't decide to introduce that model in the NI since it works so well in the south.
