I read it as the amount bet on horse, harness and dog racing is down but the numbers betting are up and the sports betting (presumably rugby and football) is doing very well and the top turnover races are what you might expect in a month with the Everest, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup but the Ellerslie race has done very well.

I don't know why NZTR won't let me bet in from over here - the amount I would contribute to the coffers, within a couple of years, every race would be worth a million dollars or more, every course would have diamond encrusted stands and all food and drink on course would be free.

Before the geo blocking, is it correct that the likes of Betfair or Aussie bookies paid some fees to NZ Racing?   Or was the whole reason for geo blocking because they all got a free ride of the NZ product?

For myself personally, since Betfair has been blocked I haven't bet a single dollar, and anecdotally I know a few others in my friend group the same.

One thing it certainly makes you realise when your not betting on a regular basis is that racing on a whole is near enough completely invisible outside of cup weeks (or bad incidents/publicity) unless you are actively seeking it.

Yes. We got about $13m a year via the Point of consumption tax (10% of revenue from NZ residents). That was lost with the monopoly legislation.

They also paid GST on that.

Sorry. Typo above. POCC should read $4m p.a.

It is interesting Ranger

My 40 year old son and his schoolmates of years ago don’t go the races and bet on horse racing solely on the Melbourne Cup and Canterbury’s Cup week big races. Outside of that they have zero interest in betting on horse racing, and neither bet or attend horse race days.

But they all regularly bet on Sports on a regular basis across the sports they follow. I have little doubt Sports betting is the future for Entain

And the Gov was putty in their hands.

I'm a bit gobsmacked over that sports betting figure.

Personally, I'm not surprised at all.

This is a much easier 'take' for Entain - the events are laid on by others and they merely have to promote and entice (responsibly of course 🙄

I've become easily confused as I have aged, so some smarter people may be able to correct me where required....

Here's a few of my, ponderings, right or wrong....

62% of racing spend is on offshore product - isn't that of concern to the people running the shows ? (I'm one, as I just can't be bothered with the local product anymore, sadly). I suspect this will be worse in November with the MC in the mix...

180 million spent by 117,400 active customers is $1538 as an average!

This seems pretty high to me (I consider myself average but I'm well below this as it turns out)

I think one of the clever things they have done to boost figures is the money back bonus bets, dollar regurgitation that didn't exist previously. I don't target them personally as I am a true professional at pick 4th's, but I know people that swear by them.

Not saying they are a bad thing, just wondering how much of this turnover comes from this area??

Average field sizes for Harness look 'ok' I guess, but the spilt of North and South would show a sad state of affairs in the North. Maybe there is more detail in other reports, and those in charge have it at hand with amazing strategies to deal with some of the truth below the pretty purple surface, just maybe.....

The average (mean) will be a lot higher that the median. I'd imagine the median would be some way below $1,000, with the mean being skewed higher by those betting $20,000+ in the same way that nine people betting $20 a month and one betting $15,000 would leave nine of them thinking they're well below average when in fact they're the norm but the mean is skewed by an outlier.
